CWG ‘corruption’ probe PM sets up panel to probe CWG ‘corruption’ Former CAG Shunglu to head high-level committee; PMO to get report in 3 months With the Commonwealth Games over and demands for probe mounting, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh tonight appointed a high-level committee headed by a former Comptroller and Auditor General to go into allegations of corruption related to the mega sporting event. The committee, headed by former CAG VK Shunglu, will submit its report to the Prime Minister within three months, PMO spokesman said. The announcement came even as the CAG stepped into the picture to conduct assessment of various projects related to the CWG with officials set to visit all the stadia and go through records. Significantly, CWG Organising Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi, who has been in the line of fire over the corruption allegations, was snubbed when he was not invited to a felicitation at the Prime Minister’s residence for Indian medal winners. “The government has decided to constitute a high-level committee under former CAG VK Shunglu to look into all matters relating to organising and conduct of the Commonwealth Games 2010, New Delhi, including to draw lessons from it,†the spokesman said. The details of terms of reference will be announced in a day or two, the spokesman added. The developments came as opposition parties, which had held their fire during the 12-day event, today stepped up their demand for thorough probe into corruption charges which the Congress said should be done and those guilty, if any, be brought to book. The CAG, which had held up its audit during the Games, today sent its inspection officials to the CPWD office located inside S P Mukherjee Stadium to check the accounts related to the CWG projects. The audit work for CWG is related to work payments, contracts and leasing of sports equipment among others. The CAG audit would look into how the balance between the cost and quality has been maintained and whether there has been any cost overrun. “We have started with the CPWD office inside the S P Mukherjee Stadium today. Now that the athletes have vacated the venues, we will gradually start sending our inspection officers to all the stadia,†an official with the auditing watchdog said. The CAG had begun assessing the Games’ expenditure in August, but had to stop the audit related works in the last week of September as they could not access the premises of the Central Public Works Department (CPWD). The official said the CAG had to suspend the audit works for over a fortnight since most of the CPWD offices are located inside the venues which had the athletes till yesterday. The official said the biggest venue, the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, is yet to be inspected by the CAG and the government auditor would soon send its inspectors there. The statutory auditor expects to submit the final report to the government by January-end, to be presented in the budget session of Parliament in February. In August last year, the CAG had submitted an evaluation report to the Prime Minister’s Office and the Sports Ministry pointing out the slow pace of progress of all the projects connected with the Games. Against the backdrop of attack on him from various quarters over delays and charges of corruption ranging from favouritism in award of contracts to expensive hiring of training equipment, Kalmadi had the ignominy of being ignored for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s reception to the medal winning sportsmen. Sports Minister MS Gill was seen on the lawns of the Race Course residence of the Prime Minister when he met the performers this evening. PMO sources said Kalmadi was not invited, nor was any other OC official.

CWG Gold Medalist Wrestler to Skip Asian Games 2010 Sushi Kuamr got a gold medal in Men’s Wrestling 66 Kg category. Just after the conclusion of the games, Sushil Kumar declared in a press conference that he would not be participating in the next month’s Asian Games to be held in China. This is because of a shoulder injury that he developed during his wrestling matches in Commonwealth Games. Sushil Kumar confirmed his unavailability for the Asian Games 2010 because he does not want his shoulder’s condition to worsen further. Instead he would prefer to get appropriate medical attention and get it fit before participating in any forthcoming competitions. Sushil Kumar also has some neck pain and he feels that psychologically he needs some rest before any major event. After World Championship he straightaway started his practice and preparations for Commonwealth Games. So for a next bigger aim of Olympics to be held in 2012 in London, he wants a break and get fully fit thereby sacrificing Asian Games. Sushil Kumar is Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and World Championship winner. Indian Wrestler Pradeep Kumar will be replacing Sushil Kumar for the Asian Games to be held in Guangzhou city in China starting from 12th November till 27th November. :((

Shuttlers leave C'wealth Games on a high but Asiad will provide sterner test THE shuttlers have left their mark on the New Delhi Commonwealth Games stage with a four-gold medal haul but the Asian Games in Guangzhou next month will be a different kettle of fish. Lee Chong Wei and Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, the world No. 1s in men’s singles and doubles respectively, will skip the Denmark and French Opens to get ready for the Asiad assignment from Nov 12-27. Chong Wei hardly had to get out of second gear as he romped to the singles gold in style – by not dropping a single game in New Delhi. But in Guangzhou, he will have to step up a gear or two as he will have to contend with the likes of Lin Dan, Chen Jin, Sony Dwi Kuncoro and defending champion Taufik Hidayat. Chong Wei settled for the bronze medal in Doha four years ago after he was beaten by Indonesian Taufik in the semi-finals. Although former Olympic champion Taufik stunned Chong Wei in the quarter-finals of the World Championships in Paris in August, he will find it tough to defend his Asian Games gold medal. China’s Lin Dan is the favourite to bag the only title he has yet to win and what better way to do it than in his own backyard. The men’s doubles pairing of Kien Keat-Boon Heong will also be aiming to regain their edge over China’s Fu Haifeng-Cai Yun. Kien Keat-Boon Heong brushed aside opposition from Haifeng-Cai Yun and Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan to bag the Asian Games gold medal in Doha. But things will be different in Guangzhou as their rivals are now familiar with their style of play. Haifeng-Cai Yun used to lose to the Malaysian pair frequently but they have improved a lot since the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and gone on to win two world titles. National coach Rexy Mainaky said good preparation would be crucial to their chances of doing well in Guangzhou. “It is harder to defend the title than winning it the first time. Our pair have an equal chance of doing well and I believe it will be between them, the Koreans (Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung) and Haifeng-Cai Yun,” said Rexy, who returned home with the badminton squad yesterday. “The Asian Games players will not go for the Denmark and French Opens as they need to prepare at home. “The Commonwealth Games campaign was much easier but the level is much higher at the Asiad. “Our players will only concentrate on their main events, unlike at the Commonwealth Games.” In New Delhi, Kien Keat partnered Eei Hui to become the first Malaysian pair to win the mixed doubles title at the Commonwealth Games for the first time. But they will not see action as a pair at the Asiad as Eei Hui is taking a break. “Winning the mixed doubles gold in New Delhi will definitely encourage others to focus on this event. “Some of the current players will not be around in four years’ time for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and we have to get the younger ones ready by then,” said Rexy.

What a way to ridicule the champion from India!! He has a shoulder injury and played through the CWG in pain. Will take a well deserved rest. BTW the guy is ranked number 1 and is undefeated in last 18 months in his weight categroy!! On our chances, surely it will be more than 10 golds this time. Compared to last time, our shotters, boxers and wrestlers will have a better chance of winning golds. Weightlifters too will have a good chance to win some golds. Watch out for the ones who missed a gold here , the likes of Sania Mirza, Peas and Bhupathi, Akhil , Vijender etc. And then in athletcis also some of our athletes will be in contention.

Lets see...hopefully:two_thumbs_up: but the standards here in the Asiad are way superior than CWG...last time it was China all the way with more than 150 golds.. For me winning in Asian games is more important and better than CWG...coz there was not much competition there for our wrestlers....

errr ...no , overall there isnt much difference in standards . depends on which sport you are talking about ...wrestling , which Sushil kumar has dropped out is of much lower standards than CWG , we wil probabaly sweep all the golds ..swimming , athletics , boxing , hockey etc are all of lower standards ..while Shooting & Archery , we will have to deal with Chinese and Koreans , same with Badminton and TT .

When the wife provoked the master blaster
