1987 Ind vs Eng Just to confirm, in 1987 Kapil had won the toss too and deceided to field
The Bombay brigands (SMG, DBV and RJS) made sure India lost the match as Kapil was the captain and didn't want India to win it. As expected Kapil stepped down after the WC and DBV became the captain. DBV sat down on purpose. If he had played who was #1 bat for India at that time, India would have won that match. (just like Wasim bhai in 1996 QF against India)

Credit for that win goes to the assault of Gooch on our spinners and of course the wrong strategy of bowling first on a spinning track which got slower by the day.

What a wonderful conspiracy theory.
There were some really strong rumors at the time about it happening. I wouldn't put it down completely to a baseless conspiracy theory. India were huge favorites with the bookies before the semi final since Pakistan had already been knocked out. And if you watch Shastri's batting in the match where he would skip down the track repeatedly only to pat the ball back to the English spinners, you can't help wonder.

Legend has it that Vengsarkar was food poisoned on account of eating fish fry at a local eatery on the eve of the match and gotten ill to play the SF a severe dent to the morale of team him being the top bat of the side at the time. All that reasoning behind the mysterious illness sounded a little fishy to me ever since. Oh well. Kapil out and Vengsarkar in as captain after that WC exit.
