NareshK
What's up with this obsession to find express fast bowlers ? He will be slaughtered if he doesnt know how to maintain a good line and length or get some swing or bounce. Pace doesnt mean anything in Indian/sub continent conditions. Even Shoaib Akhtar bowled slow in yesterday's match because the pitch was slow and bowling quickly would mean the ball would come on to the bat more and easy for the batsmen to play shots. Bowlers like Praveen Kumar have a better chance of succeeding in these conditions. Link to comment
sid316
The best thing is that he is producing some genuine pace on a dead track.Being an indian, thats really great to see. Link to comment

NareshK
Yes, I'd rather have a bowler who bowls 120 kph who is effective on flat sub continent wickets than some guy who bowls 150 kph and sprays it all around. If you bowl short and wide, any international batsman can hit you for runs. If you bowl a tight line, even Sehwag cant score runs off you. Pace does count sometimes but its over rated in sub continent conditions and against quality batsmen. Link to comment
sid316
Pace is always handy in any condition. You will always find all the greats of the game and experts (imran, viv etc) supporting the genuine pace.all the great teams have got success with a combination of genuine pace with other departments.so never question the importance of pace. NareshK
I'm not saying pace is not important. Also control over line and length is important and sometimes in slow conditions, extra pace helps batsmen to play shots. Why else do you think Shoaib Akhtar bowled slow even in his first spell yesterday ? Its surprising to see people calling someone who bowls 145+ the future of pace attack when he could be crap at bowling a decent line and length. Link to comment

vvvslaxman
Let me get it straight. Hasn't played first class cricket yet. But already a future? Let him do well in domestic for a season before being touted as future sensation. Link to comment
saneindian
First spell of Varun, his average speed was 141-142 kmph with a top speed of 147.3 kmph and a number of deliveries over 144 kmph. Has come back for a 2nd spell and is bowling at an average of around 140 kmph. Has got a very good bouncer and despite some technical glitches in the action (non existent use of left hand, speed in the run up etc) generates lot of pace off the deack. Has got a good release and a lovely seam position. Looks to be better quipped to swing/seam the ball at pace vis-a-vis Umesh Yadav. Sadly Umesh Yadav isn't playing in this match else would have been a good comparison between the two of them. Both of them have got a similar height and similar built. Umesh has a free flowing action, Varun looks a little locked in his action (which suggests there could be a further scope for improving his pace). These two have to be fastest bowlers in India currently. Link to comment
saneindian
Let me get it straight. Hasn't played first class cricket yet. But already a future? Let him do well in domestic for a season before being touted as future sensation. Naah, he has played 2 seasons of domestic cricket so far, without much success though. 11 first class matches, 25 wickets@38 with a best of 7/53. Perhaps today is the first time many of us have seen him bowl live and he has looked impressive. Was listening to WV Raman's comments (He is Bengal's coach) and Raman said he has seen Varun bowl quicker than what he has in this match so far. He also said even though Varun did not pick too many wickets in the ongoing domestic season, he troubled everyone with his pace and bounce on dead tracks. That's potential for you. Its upto the coaches now to ensure potential gets converted into good performances. Link to comment
