Hotspot should be used to complement Hawkeye and not compete with it.

From wiki: Mechanism: Hot Spot uses two infra-red cameras positioned at either end of the ground.[4] These cameras sense and measure heat from friction generated by a collision, such as ball on pad, ball on bat, ball on ground or ball on glove. Using a subtraction technique a series of black-and-white negative frames is generated into a computer, precisely localising the ball's point of contact.[5] [edit] Whereas - Hawk-Eye is a complex computer system used in cricket, tennis and other sports to visually track the path of the ball and display a record of its most statistically likely path as a moving image So - Hotspot's competitor is Snickometer and not Hawkeye. In fact, Hawkeye and Hotspot should be used in combination to further the accuracy of 'point of impact'. After the point of impact, the prediction is better done by Hawkeye. I do not even know of the alternatives (except human eye). Now, lets say we use only Hotspot, and lets say it is 100% accurate in determining the point of impact with just two of its infra-red cameras. Using that information to predict whether the ball would have hit the stumps, just based on 2-D video should be more error prone. As it would also be subjected to perspective/angle of the video source as compared to the angle at which Umpire is viewing. Hawkeye may not be 100% accurate in predicting the path, but can not be worse than trying to visualize the path using only eyes (with limited video source). Why doesn't someone do the study - Hawkeye vs Umpires - block the view of ball's path at some point and ask umpires to quickly predict whether the ball would have hit the stumps or not - especially on those marginal cases, where the impact is good 1-2 meters away from stumps and might/might-not hit the stumps by couple of inches/size-of-ball at max. And compare it with Hawkeye predictions.
