Zaheer 'fine', but concern stays TIMES NEWS NETWORK / PL Aravind BANGALORE, June 14: The players preparing for the tour of Ireland and Scotland had a long and tiring day at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Thursday. But the absence of pace spearhead Zaheer Khan from the outdoor sessions for the second day running raised concerns over his fitness status. Zaheer refrained from bowling at the nets and confined himself to light exercise and some laps of the ground. The left-arm seamer sustained a groin injury during the recently-concluded Afro-Asia Cup but has been declared fit by physio John Gloster. Bowling coach Venkatesh Prasad, however, told reporters that the Mumbai bowler was "fine". Unlike the first day, the team was at its full strength. The six players who had been held up because of the airline staff strike - Sourav Ganguly, MS Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh, Ramesh Powar, RP Singh and Piyush Chawla - arrived here on Wednesday night and joined the camp. The players were divided into two teams and played under simulated match conditions. Dhoni was his usual self, carting the ball all over the ground. Dinesh Karthik also looked in fine touch. Ganguly got hit during the practice session but was back in action soon after, brushing aside any injury concerns. Bowling coach Venkatesh Prasad spent a lot of time time with Sreesanth and Ajit Agarkar, while a young nets bowler, Zahoor, impressed Sachin Tendulkar, beating him thrice in an over. Tendulkar had a word of advice for the young pacer after the session. The afternoon session was completely dedicated to fielding. It was a position-specific session, with Prasad concentrating on improving throwing and fielding skills in the deep. The players also practised relay throws.

It's the same old stuff with Zaheer, injuries, injuries and more injuries. At this rate I don't see Zaheer able to play the full series in England. It is better the selection committee keeps a reserve bowler ready.
