'Sehwag improving by the day'

Recommended Posts

Would you still not blame IPL and Sehwag ? I understand or rather accept the logic of inconsequential tour of WI but what about this one. This is the biggest series of the year and Sehwag already struggling with his shoulder in the world cup decided to play through IPL and maybe jeopardized two test series. Even if he is selected, not sure if he will be fully fit. Hope so.

Did he play through pain during the SA series?- YES Did he play through pain during the WC?-YES Why blame just the IPL? He did delay his surgery to represent the country in the biggest event and what was previously the biggest series. We may continue to debate what he should have done w.r.t the IPL, but I guess someone who has given so much for the country in the last 10-12 years does deserve a bit of leeway.

Okay so are you equating playing for India in SA and playing WC with playing for Delhi Daredevils in what should be India's offseason i.e the time to recover from injuries

Nope, all I am saying is don't question the guy's commitment when he has recently played with serious injury in what were two of the biggest series/cups for us. And what you are referring to as India's offseason is basically BCCI's biggest money spinner these days. When a legend of Sachin's stature was forced to play through injury, expecting the likes of Viru to go against the establishment will be foolish. We may keep pontificating about how players should prefer country over club but the fact remains these players are professionals and know what works the best for them. We all will do exactly what these players have done if presented with a similar opportunity and we should not be hypocrites by whining about the choices the players are making.

Indian board also to blame for Sehwag missing out in England Indian board also to blame for Sehwag missing out in England Dileep Premachandran Jul 4, 2011 In just over a fortnight, Lord's will witness the 2,000th Test match. It will also be the opening contest of an unofficial Test world championship, between the top-ranked Indians and an improving England. India start the heavyweight clash with a handicap. For David Haye a couple of nights ago, it was a broken little toe that ruined chances of taking Wladimir Klitschko's belts. India will go to Lord's without Virender Sehwag, whose appetite for landing haymakers with the bat is unparalleled. While he is part of India's 17-man squad, Sehwag is likely to miss at least the first fortnight of the tour. With the Trent Bridge Test scheduled just four days after Lord's, he could miss half the series. It should never have come to this. Along with Sachin Tendulkar, Sehwag was been central to India's charge up the Test rankings in the past three years. Indian cricket authorities have been aware of the state of his shoulder for a couple of years now. With such an important series on the horizon, it would have made perfect sense for him to go under the knife as soon as India had ended nearly three decades of World Cup hurt in April. Instead, Sehwag played 11 Indian Premier League games for the Delhi Daredevils before the shoulder packed up. The cynics find it easy to blame players' greed when such things happen. But there is no overstating the pressure that the India board puts on leading players to turn out in the IPL Should India lose to England, with one of their batting talismans missing half the series, fans will be perfectly entitled to ask for another kind of decision-review system. http://www.thenational.ae/sport/cricket/indian-board-also-to-blame-for-sehwag-missing-out-in-england

The best solution for this scenario not to occur again is that all the centrally contracted players need to undergo mandatory medical checkup by the doctors either contracted by BCCO or 3rd party independent panel, and if a player is injured BCCI should ask the player to rest and reimburse the player to the tune of his IPL earnings. This will ensure that players don't hide injuries or there's no incentive to risk a major injury while playing IPL. In case a player gets injured and it's determined that the player was carrying an injury beforehand the doctor/physician/panel who conducted the pre-tourney medical test will be liable for prosecution/fine. BCCI needs to understand that players are the reasons why they are in a position they are in and the players need to be protected. I hope BCCI come up with a plan soon as I can't see players like Dhoni, Gambhir and the likes lasting too long based on their ever-increasing workload and the demands put on them by their IPL franchises.

LOL..BCCI reimbursing the players lossess. hahaha.. I would be surprised if BCCI doesnt ask the player to pay the revenue loss they have due to the player being injured and not turning out.
That's the sad part. BCCI is making so much money that even if they have to reimburse 3-4 contracted players it will still be peanuts to them.

Its easy to say behind the computer sitting on chair that he should've skipped IPL, I bet you'd have given up anything to get that kind of money which they get in IPL. They are not soldiers, their only career is cricket, so they have full right to earn. I don't think he did anything wrong.

Nope, I would blame BCCI not Sehwag. Sehwag is within his rights to do the best for himself and his family. It is BCCI who has to ensure that cricketer's interests are protected. If someone gives us a similar choice - 2 million dollars for 6 weeks or a fraction of it for the whole year, i know what we would be doing as well. Blaming Sehwag smells of hypocrisy as most of the guys blaming are the ones who themselves have went abroad for greener pastures but want someone else to make the "sacrifice" for the country.

Uncertainty remains over Sehwag's return India are set to be without Virender Sehwag for the first two Tests against England and there is still no definite timetable for his return to the side following the shoulder surgery that ruled him out of the West Indies tour. It had already been announced that Sehwag will be joining the tour two weeks late after being given extra time to recover at home but there remains uncertainty over the seriousness of his problem. "We've heard that he'll be over here for maybe the third and fourth Test, so we're crossing our fingers for that," Duncan Fletcher, the India coach, said. On the recent tour of West Indies, India had an entirely new opening combination because Gautam Gambhir also missed the trip due to injury. Abhinav Mukund partnered Murali Vijay for the three matches and it was Mukund who did enough to secure a berth to England having made 147 runs at in six innings. Mukund now faces the prospect of joining forces with Gambhir to face England's new-ball attack at Lord's and Trent Bridge. MS Dhoni wants his side to be given a solid platform but knows Sehwag's boots are tough to fill. "We are a side that relies on our openers quite a bit," he said. "If we get off to a good start then we can really capitalise with the middle order we have. "As far as Virender Sehwag is concerned, there aren't many cricketers in the world who can have the impact he can. Of course we'll miss him, but the good thing for Indian cricket is it gives a chance to a youngster like Mukund who can have a look at international cricket and see what areas he needs to improve. Viru will be back at some point, but it's good to have Gautam back as well." Sehwag, though, is just one part of a formidable batting line-up that will include the returning Sachin Tendulkar along with Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman. Fletcher also believes that the tough batting conditions India faced in West Indies will stand them in good stead for the series ahead. "In West Indies, without some top players, they played on some spicy wickets - two like I'd never been involved with before - it was really quick, it bounced and seamed," he said. "They handled it well. So we feel they are in a good space at the moment and can carry on." Dhoni, meanwhile, isn't overly concerned that India only have their three-day match against Somerset as preparation because the team are coming off their hard-fought series in the Caribbean, although he may have been lulled slightly by the warm day on Thursday. The forecast isn't so promising. "The West Indian climate is quite different but there's nice weather here for cricket. I don't think there's too much pressure on us to acclimatise," he said. "The last two days we've had fantastic net sessions. In West Indies wickets were slightly different. It was a challenge for the batsmen because shot-playing wasn't very easy. Over here it might be a bit different because the outfield should be miles faster than what we had in West Indies."
