The greatest day in Indian cricket history! Woohoo! World Champions yayyy thats what we were today. :congrats::congrats::congrats::congrats: The 1983 win would rank as one of the greatest achievements of India, not only in cricket but otherwise. The sheer impact of the win on citizens of India is unparalleled, as is the aftermath that would slowly move the world cricket center from England to sub-continent. Against the most dominating team of its time India came trumps. Not once but twice, one in prelims matches and then in finals. On a green-top against the best foursome ever assembled - Garner, Roberts, Marshall, Holding- India made a rather low 183 but not before Srikkanth, Amarnath, Kapil, Patil, Yashpal etc had played strokes that would draw reverence. And when Windies batted the low-keyed Indian bowlers ran through them for a mere 140. We were home. Kapil's Devils were world champions. Kapil_Dev.gif

We have to be associated with the greatest comebacks in the game. In ODIs, it has to be bowling out the mightiest batting lineup in the last 30 years for just 140 that too in a world cup final! Close second would be winning a final after being 146/5 chasing 326. Both on the same ground. And in test cricket, the great fightback of them all. World record winning streak, loss by 10 wickets in the previous test, down by 271 runs and following on and a win against all odds on the last day against the SRW juggernaut! You cannot make this up! :top:

You are right about that Gambit. India does have some great record in making comebacks. In ODI the best comeback was perhaps when India after being dismissed for 125 came back to dismiss the other team for 87. That the other team was Pakistan makes it only too sweet. http://www.cricinfo.com/db/ARCHIVE/1980S/1984-85/OD_TOURNEYS/R4NC/IND_PAK_R4NC_ODI1_22MAR1985.html

How I cheered for India in that final !! A perfect example of a united team beating a team of champions. When the Windies rolled India for 180 odd, it seemed a walk in the park to win, especially as it was 60 overs a side back then. India was enthusiastic and undaunted by the WI juggernaut and with Madan Lal and Roger Binny starring, won by 40 runs. As a captain, I often used that match as an example to my team, especially when we'd batted first and made a lowish total - most recently in my second last season of cricket, in 2001. We played a team in the final who had thumped us through the year and were undefeated. We scored just 112 and most of the team was down about it. I simply reminded them of the '83 WC final and how we had 112 and they hadn't scored a run yet. We attacked with every ounce of spirit possible and skittled them for 34 !! India's '83 WC victory will long inspire similar performances.
