Fit Akhtar wants crack at Aussies

Well Dhondy, recent form does count for a lot. MundaPakistani has a good point in saying Shoaib has bowled brilliantly against the Aussies recently. Career record is a little average, but recent form counts more. For example, what was Sachin Tendulkar's average against NZ after 15 ODI matches? Somewhere around 20? 30? After that he's done very very well against them. Same case with Shoaib Akhtar.

Sheesh, one spell at Colombo, just one spell is all thats worth remembering of doperman's exploits vs the convicts. Akhtar must first hope to conquer Sehwag, if not atleast redeem himself before setting his sights on the Aussies.

Fit Akhtar wants crack at Aussies
should be appropriately replaced with "Freed doper wants Aussie crack"

It always surprises me how even the most educated fans seem to forget about the Strike rate factor...people would simply look at the averages and just ignore the SR. anyways stats or no stats it's quite obvious that Akhtar had the ability to destroy any batting line up in the world so now the question is that even if he can stay fit will he be able to bowl as well as he used to.

He has a lot of good performances against AUS but that spell in particular was one of the finest spells of fast bowling in the last 10 years or so.

Unless strike rate is above 55, i don't care what the strike rate is. Having a better strike rate is not all that it is cracked up to be in tests. You have on average 110 overs to take 10 wicket ( thats a strike rate of 66) so its not that imperative to have a super strike rate.55 or below is enough of a cushion- having a strike rate of 49 isnt that much better than 55. Also, as we saw with Ambrose ( when bowling alongside Dillon/Rose/Benjamins etc) and McGrath ( when bowling alongside Lee, Gillespie, etc), them keeping it real tight on their end often forces the batsman to chance his arm against the lesser bowlers, giving THEM the wicket. Akram earnt a few wickets for Waqar that way too by keeping it real tight. Sorry but strike rate is not a very important guage. On flat wickets, you restrict the opposition to lower score by keeping it tight, not bowling fast and loose like Shoaib always does. I'd rather have a 25-10-50-3 figure than 15-2-50-3.

Reality is that Akhtar has had one genuinely good outing vs Australia in tests, his 3-51 & 5-21 in Colombo. Other times, when he's picked up wickets, he never really dominated the Aussies- he went for plenty and the Aussies caned him good. For eg, his two other five-fers are : 22-1-99-5 in Perth and 27-4-109-5. Both the times, he got caned for over 4 rpo in the innings. The only other times, apart from the abovementioned, when Akhtar took more than 2 wickets in an innings vs Aussies, it was a haul of 32-2-153-4, where he gets caned at nearly 5 rpo ! Sorry but Akhtar hasnt been impressive vs the Aussies.
