Pace legend Dennis Lillee said Indian fast bowlers "have to mature" and become more "safe and stable" if they are to match the Australians. More... Irfan has problem in his action: Lillee TIMES NEWS NETWORK / Pradeep Kumar CHENNAI, June 27: Australian pace legend Dennis Lillee said Irfan Pathan had the potential to become an all-rounder on a long-term basis. "He does not have a shoulder injury. He had a glitch in his action and had gone backwards in his bowling. We know what the problem is. Irfan is young and has the potential to be a good all-rounder for the Indian team for a long time," said Lillee on Wednesday. Pathan, and Indian pacer Munaf Patel are currently undergoing a 'rehab' programme at the MRF Pace Foundation. TA Sekar, chief coach of the Foundation, said Patel was not bowling full throttle so far. "He has been asked to follow a programme. I do not want to meddle with it. Munaf should feel comfortable with it and only then I will ask him to bowl with a full run-up. As of now, he is giving his 50 per cent," he said. Lillee, meanwhile, said, "Irfan is using different sets of muscles because of the flaw in his action. He never uses his front arm fully, but now he has started doing it. He says there is pain. But Irfan is now close to getting back into the team. He needs to play matches." The pace guru added that young Indian fast bowlers needed to mature to attain the calibre of Australian or English fast bowlers. "The Australian and English pacers are more established in their sides because they are a lot matured, being older in age. The young Indians are vying against each other." On the proposed free-hit rules in ODIs which the ICC may implement in near future, Lillee said there was no need for too many rule changes. "Perhaps they may ban the yorker and the outswinger also." Commenting on the foreign coach, he said the best available should be picked as coach. "It does not matter even if he is from Mars. The best available coach should be picked."

For the sake of Indian cricket , we need Irfan fit and performing. It was no coincidence that during our winning streak of 2005-2006 , Pathan was at his best. Nearly 50 wickets in 25 matches ! Not to forget those quick innings at the top of the order. Those were dream days for Greg Chappell. Whatever he tried , worked. unfiltered 73 1006 83 25.15 0 5 115 5/27 25.91 1 12 0 filtered 25 482 83 34.42 0 3 49 5/27 19.63 1 4 0

I've seen couple of videos recently of Irfan when he was at his peak. To be honest he was bowling at similar speed then too about 130ish but was swinging the ball both ways. Now he has lost the swing and has dropped his speed by about 5 -10 k in search of that. Now he has neither swing or is sharp.

I will upload couple of videos shortly, one against SL in 2004 in the Asia cup and one against Zimbabwe in 2004. Both very close games and Pathan played a major role in the win bowling the penultimate overs. He looked very confident then and had good rhythm. Now he looks very short of confidence and cannot seem to swing the ball consistently. It happens to swing bowlers playing more in the Indian conditions I suppose.
