Donny
One easy way to avoid it, Shoaib. Don't bowl no balls. Link to comment

karina
I don't get it - isn't a batsman already allowed an extra delivery after a nb? What's this free hit thingy then? Link to comment
Ram
I don't get it - isn't a batsman already allowed an extra delivery after a nb? What's this free hit thingy then? Free-hit simply means - The batsman cant get out at all , by any means, be it caught, bowled or stumped. So its like a license to swing without fear. Its a legal ball and will be taken into consideration for the over count, but yea the bottom line is - batsman cant get out. Link to comment
King
It's a bit silly ICC wants to keep the game fairly quick and fines the captains match fees even if the fielding side bowls an over less but they want to introduce this rule. The captains will surely make few adjustments every time a no ball is bowled and there is a free hit. I'm quite sure most of the captains will lose their match fees every other game. Anyone that captains Dilhara Fernando, Brett Lee or Sami will pretty much have to play for free. Link to comment
King Tendulkar
Free hits are fun though. i think its a good idea! good entertainment seeing a bat have a free attempt to swipe at the ball Link to comment

More... Afridi backs ICC’s free-hit rule Karachi: Flamboyant Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi on Sunday said he favoured the International Cricket Council’s new rule of awarding a free hit to batsman after a no ball delivery in one-dayers, saying it would make the game more entertaining and exciting. Afridi said he understood the apprehensions of fast bowlers Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif, who feel the new rule penalised a bowler harshly if he sent down a no-ball, but felt the two bowlers would not face any problem. “In modern cricket, Shoaib and Asif are two of the most disciplined and accurate bowlers I have seen in one-day internationals. They bowl very few no-balls. So I don’t see them facing any problems,” he said. “The new rule will make the other bowlers also more accurate and disciplined to avoid giving away bonus runs and that is a good thing as less wides and no balls means less time lost in a match.” Reservations Akhtar and Asif have expressed reservations over the rule, effective from October 1, which says on the very next delivery after after a no-ball, the batsman can take a free hit without any danger of being dismissed unless he is run-out. The pace duo has said the new rule would only add to the pressure on the bowlers in a game whose rules are increasingly a big advantage to the batsmen. Afridi said the concept behind one-dayers and Twenty20 cricket was to provide entertainment and excitement to the paying public. “The real cricket remains Test matches. But you have to keep on innovating with new rules to make the sport more popular and globalised,” Afridi said. He also said that another new ICC rule that makes it mandatory for the umpires to change the ball after every 35 overs in a match would make life easier for the bowlers. PCB’s take The Pakistan Cricket Board, meanwhile, distanced itself from the outburst by Akhtar and Asif, saying the new rules were debated by all ICC members before it decided to try them out. “They have already been tested in domestic cricket in South Africa, Australia and England. So their results are well known,” PCB director cricket operations Zakir Khan said. “The concept behind the free hit rule is to make the bowlers more disciplined and stop wastage of time. The quicker an innings is concluded it means more time to rest between innings for the teams and that is a good idea,” he said. Zakir said it was the need of the time to keep on innovating with the rules. Link to comment
