Lawson likely to be appointed Pakistan's coach Barring any late glitches, Geoff Lawson, the former Australian Test fast bowler, is likely to be appointed as the new Pakistan coach on Monday. A board official close to the coaching selection process told Cricinfo that final negotiations with Lawson, who had impressed them the most, were underway. "It is heading Lawson's way definitely. There are still a couple of things to be sorted out but it is looking like he is the man for us," said the official. Lawson was one of three Australians shortlisted and interviewed for the position by the Pakistan board, Dav Whatmore and Richard Done the other two, after the position was let vacant following the death of Bob Woolmer. Whatmore was the early favourite for the position but it is now understood that a number of players, as well as key members of team management, were keener on Lawson than Whatmore and have passed on their preference to the board. Whatmore's cause was not helped by former Sri Lanka captain, Arjuna Ranataunga, who is alleged to have advised Pakistan against Whatmore during a chance meeting in Glasgow. Lawson played 46 Tests for Australia and though he hasn't got international coaching experience, he has coached New South Wales. Pakistan will be eager to make sure that Lawson agrees to the offer before they make a formal announcement, taking care to avoid the fate that befell their Indian counterparts, who announced Graham Ford as their next coach only for Ford to turn the offer down. The PCB's ad-hoc committee is in Karachi for a two-day meeting starting Sunday and the board is expected to name the coach officially on Monday. They are also expected to announce new central contracts for players.

Is this the same Lawson , who does crap commentary on T.V ? If it is so , then ATB to pakistan too. At best , he doesnt even know what he is talking about. At worst , he talks total trash , so it doesnt matter if he knows about it or not. Whatmore should retire from coaching. Its like as though he has been "dropped" from coaching. But you never know, last heard he was on his way to Kathmandu to give a presentation for the position of the coach of the Nepali cricket team.

I dont think that story is true. Why would the PCB consult Ranatunga in the first place ? Its not as though Ranatunga is a sympathiser of Pak cricket or something. I am pretty sure that story was a media creation.

Lawson looks a very relaxed and a happy chappy. He's going to be under lot of stress. Rest assured he will win in the fist fights with the team members though. Guys like Shoaib will think twice before getting physical with Lawson for sure.

Lawson seems to be a fan of Shoaib and said during an interview(about a month ago) that a fit Shoaib can take Pakistan to the number 1 spot.

now lets take woolmer in as indian coach. we need a damn coach. hes the best coach out.. and since hes out on his own we might even get him for cheap :wink_smile:

Congratulations to Geoff Lawson, lets hope his stint with Pakistan turns better than Woolmer's. I also can't help but spare a moment for Whatmore. The man left BD with a hope to take on Indian assignment, was left our rather unceremeniously and then left out of Pakistan too. Must have been one tough summer season for him, can't see him coming back to sub-continent teams now.
