Why exactly is Tendulkar in the odi team???

Why exactly is Tendulkar in the odi team???

  1. 1.

    • To "guide" youngsters like Jadeja in the team
      9
    • To get his 100th 100 as he knows he's gonna struggle in Tests
      47
    • He wanted to have a longer vacation in Aus so he came "back" for Aussie tri series
      1
    • Can't say. It's a head scratcher and I have no clue

I can understand Tendulkar being part of the Test team and wanting to play Tests for some more time as that's the format most suited to him at the moment where he can take his time and bat as long as he can with fielding not as crucial. But what's exactly he gaining by continuing to play the odis? This is especially true since SRT hasn't played odis in quite a while - in fact for nearly a year since the WC. Wouldn't we have been better served with a youngster like Rahane or Mukund in the team than SRT taking up the spot when we anyways are going to lose? I mean it's not as if SRT is "guiding" and youngsters in odis when most of the players have played for quite a while and the guiding part can very well be done by the likes of Dhoni and Gambhir. One of the main reasons India will never be a force to be reckoned with on a long term basis coz of the sense of entitlement that players like SRT have. They treat Indian team like their personal fiefdom. It's ok for SRT to pick and choose his matches and series. He wanted to play IPL and dropped out for the WI tour, then didn't play the WI odis at home and now he's back playing odis in Aus. What exactly is the reason for the same? How can a player pick and choose his series? Worse part is that selectors and the board are allowing this to happen. They should have not picked Tendulkar and told him since he hasn't played odis in a year he shouldn't get in straight away and maybe he should move away from the shorter formats but our selectors don't have the balls to say so. The only reason I can think of Tendulkar wanting to be in the odi team is that he wants to get that elusive 100th 100. He finally figured out he will find it tough to get his 100th 100 in Tests so he's "back" in odis to reach the milestone. Hate to see this 39 year old selfish player in the team at the cost of a youngster just so that he could get to his milestone.

Now we have to carry him in the team for his 100th 100 just like we carried Kapil so that he could get past Hadlee. So 20 years and nothing's changed and we expect to be a cricketing superpower :haha: I mean who thought Tendulkar at the age of 39 would take on Aussie quicks while chasing 217 in 32 overs which needed to be done for us to even get close. Sehwag may not be consistent but at least in such kind of situations he's needed.

Because he is fit and skilled enough to play and is available to play, and selectors/captain have no problem with it. 10181667.jpg
That's exactly the point. Nobody will have any "problem" with a 39 year old has-been treating Indian team as his personal fiefdom and we wonder why our record is poor in cricket. So now suddenly the 39 year old star is "available" so off goes a youngster like Rahane so the "god" can get to his 100th 100.

Might be the case that Team management thinks CB series is an important tournament and we should try to win this rather than grooming a youngster. I , personally don't think he should play ODIs anymore. But I feel he will prove me wrong by playing 2-3 good knocks.

nth time .. if it was just about 100th 100, he wouldn't have missed WI series (home-ODIs and away), or England ODIs...this has been media hype all the way long, which public easily subscribe to...and this just got fueled with unfortunate dip in form and some bad luck. fun fact - at 39 he is much fitter and committed/passionate than testosterone kay godowns - Ashwin, VK, PK etal...raina/kohli/Jaddu/Rohit can dive around in infield, but SRT (and most of his generation) were never known to do that..and he still gives his 100% wherever the captain places him. You don't have many choices.. Apni gaaandey jalaatey raho, hum haath sekengey, aur match ka maza lengey.....tumharey cheekhne chillane se kuchh nahi hone waala.

No...you do not have any point...if you are so much into meritocracy, why are you crying about age?, if he is fit and is able to compete, he has every right to play as long as he can. As long as there are pigeon head readers like you, media hype will never stop. To give chances to youngsters only he / other seniors stayed out of WI tour.. or Eng ODIs.... if youngsters do not have it in them to prove themselves in whatever chances they were presented with.. they are themselves to blame. If you have missed other discussions - who all preceding seniors made way for SRT/Dravid/Laxman/Ganguly/Sehwag ? these guys grabbed the chances on merit.. why it should be any different for current generation?

He missed the odis at home as he was "confident" he would get his 100 in 4 tests in Aus with Aussie fast bowling attack in the hands of youngsters + Siddle. He had no clue this Aus pace attack woul dmake a joke out of him :haha: So now he's out there trying to get to his 100th 100 coz he can get 4 chances against SL :cantstop: True that! The only thing we can do is hope someone sees the public opinion on this forum and does the right thing as we will continue to see the team flounder coz players put their personal interests ahead of the team.

n times the nth time... He may want 100 100 against world NO 1 odi side... whats the use of he playing good sides while newcomers play against mediocre teams such as WI and NZ what experience they will gain... This no longer 1990's ...team not depending on Sachin alone...even WC win proved that...and many other serirs wins even without Sachin showed not much guidance needed any way... Even IPL and CL showed MI can perform better without his guidance while may fail even with his guidance...

I dont think we should decide when he should retire, if he wants to play he should. But if he doesnt perform he should be dropped. Criteria should be this only : If you are not performing you should be dropped. Same applies for Laxman in tests, he should be dropped from the team, whether Laxman wants to retire or not that he should decide. Decision about when a player should retire should be his own

Why is that? Is he playing for his club or a local team like Borivili XI? So he can stay away from odis for a year and then "decide" he wants to play in this tri-series. Maybe he wants to get in form for IPL :haha:
