Why exactly is Tendulkar in the odi team???

Why exactly is Tendulkar in the odi team???

  1. 1.

    • To "guide" youngsters like Jadeja in the team
      9
    • To get his 100th 100 as he knows he's gonna struggle in Tests
      47
    • He wanted to have a longer vacation in Aus so he came "back" for Aussie tri series
      1
    • Can't say. It's a head scratcher and I have no clue
      13

If he can keep performing, I don't care if he continues until 100. i.e. if he performs, lets say 45-50 in 'picked' ones, and replacements are not overshadowing that significantly in other 'easier' matches.. there is no reason one should have problems with 'pick and play' - which is actually more like - rotation policy based on availability. as I said earlier.. either enjoy the matches, or apni jalatey raho.
"Pick and play" sends wrong message to the upcoming youngsters. It shows that certain individuals are bigger than the team and different rules apply to them. There can't be special treatment for anyone if the team has to be successful in the longer run. SRT is doing it right now, tomorrow Kohli and other youngsters may do the same based on this precedence. Either you are in or not, there are no 2 ways in a team game.

So, purpose of international cricket is to groom players. I say abolish all FC structure and try players directly in international matches - that too against Australia. Groom then to play against whom? may be aliens. Pick you best possible 11. Period.
Groom people like Rahane who cannot score presently in any format of the game :giggle: Average in tour games : 6 :giggle:

But how does a guy who doesn't even play odis of his own volition get into the best possible XI? So let's say Tendulkar doesn't play for the next 2 years can he walk in to the national team straight away just because he was a great player?

You guys are confusing the Test and the ODI team. There are 8 young players in the team and the management is resting Sehwag to play SRT so that Rohit can also get his chances along with Kohli. Is someone seriously suggesting that we use a major tourney match against the number 1 ODI side to test 9 youngsters out of 11 in the side?

No, we are suggesting we play players who want to play in odis. No point in backing a 39 year old has-been who selectively chooses which games to play and hasn't played a odi game since the WC and has sat out 3 odi series (IIRC) before this tri-series even though he showed up in IPL. Shows where his priorities lie.

Of course. This tour is for our youngsta beauties to have match practice besides their partying and clubbing. All our youngsta beauties rocked today and the only senior citizen in the team played so pathetically. :hehe:

Not doing that shows he's doing the right thing and allowing the youngsters to get some games. It's another matter that those youngsters did jackshit today.

Well two years in a long time. But last time, which is not even 1 year ago, when player in question played for India, in a major tournament (WC), he was the highest scorer for India and that too by a margin. You want to drop a player after that without giving him a chance to fail? If you want to drop a player to give an youngster a chance, then pick least performer of the tourney, not the best. Purpose of international cricket is to WIN not to GROOM. If players have caliber they have to hit the ground running.
