gator
Rediff had come out with a new series called Mission tomorrow, which looks at future cricket stars of india.... They featured Badrinath in their first one... There was one reader who had an interesting response.... and he feels, he may not be the most deserving of candidates.... Badrinath is a good hope but does not stand out that much from his peers. 2007: Duleep: 13th in averages, 17th in aggregate 2006: Ranji: 6th in averages and 3rd in aggregate (Kaif, Jaffer, Mullick and Raina among younger peers were similar) 2005: 67th in averages and 75th in aggregate (Gambhir scored more runs in one-third of the innings, Akash Chopra and Rajat Bhatia for example (scorers of tons in this recent match) scored more runs at higher averages and were considered to have had very bad seasons) Ok, the kid has one good season. Two years ago, Jhadav had one good season and was the flavour du jour. Badrinath is a good batsman but he has not really set Yamuna on fire, well not even dried Kauvery yet. Let us wait and watch. Time is not on his side though, he is 26 and almost past his try-for-test by date. Dinesh Mongia has consistently scored more in domestics and has not found a Test place. Badrinath does not have chance for ODIs yet. Furthermore, I hate Indian policy of only blooding youngsters unlike Aussies who churn out mature world beaters but realisticly Indian selection policies will not change and if Tamil Nadu has to look for a great hope for future, current U-19 squad is in Cooch Behar finals (Abhinav Mukund, Srivatsan look like better hopes than Badrinath) and unfortunately if Badrinath falters, even a little, they will replace him before you say train ticket to Assam or Goa where Badrinath will end up displaying his talents. Predator_05
Re: Badrinath didnt set the Yamuna on fire.... An eye-opener for the many people here who seem to bring his name up everytime an Indian middle order batsman fails to make a score. The gulf between Indian FC cricket and International cricket is too wide. FC runs don't carry as much value as a runs scored on 'A' Tours or in English County Cricket (just to give an example) would. Keeping that in mind, i am surprised this guy is saying he hates the Indian policy of blooding youngsters. Link to comment
Zap_Brannigan
Re: Badrinath didnt set the Yamuna on fire.... On one hand,Aus had the likes of hussey who had a decade of domestic cricket experience with him when he came into intl cricket that they didnt have to give him extra chances. Even ganguly(2 100s and a 50 in 1st 3 innings) and dravid (170+ in 1st 2 innings) had to be given a lot of extra chances in ODIs and tests (after the initial run)...Attapattu had 5 or 6 0s in his 1st 10 innings(something like that) On the other,we have raina, dhoni, pathan who were drafted pretty young with very little domestic cricket, having a stellar 1st year .... If a player fails due to lack of exp,i would expect them to fail in their 1st year, not the 2nd... Link to comment
gator
Re: Badrinath didnt set the Yamuna on fire.... Zap... not sure, Dhoni was drafted in very young with little experience. he was 24 and had played decent amount... kaif and Raina are prime examples tht u19, electric fielding and sucking up assure a place in the odi team. If anything he got spotted a year too late given we had no stable keeper. Don't know about badri but there was a player named sriram who looked pretty solid and venugopal certainly is compact.. The Outsider
Re: Badrinath didnt set the Yamuna on fire.... The reason why Badrinath is regarded so highly is not only because of his Ranji record but also because of his A tour performances which the writer does not mention. Link to comment
