IPL 2012: Gold coins for Delhi Daredevils if they win IPL 5

The Delhi Daredevils squad stands a chance to win gold medals if they win the fifth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). George Muthoot, chairman of the Muthoot Group, Saturday said Delhi Daredevils' players and support staff will get a 24 carat gold coin each if they win the tournament. Speaking at the Muthoot Group launch of the limited edition Delhi Daredevil Gold coins, the chairman said: "If Delhi Daredevils wins the IPL this year, the Muthhot Group will give each member of the team and staff a 24 carat limited edition gold coin." The Daredevils had a poor season last year, finishing at the bottom of the table in the IPL. This year though the Daredevils have made some important changes, bringing in explosive English batsman Kevin Pietersen, Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene, New Zealand's Ross Taylor and highly rated West Indian all-rounder Andre Russell. Muthoot Group, who are the sponsors of the Daredevils, presented the team captain Virender Sehwag a gold coin and a memorabilia that had autographs of Pietersen, Jayawardene, Taylor and David Warner of Australia. Sehwag thanked the Muthoot Group chairman for the gift and called the souvenir "priceless". "I want to thank the Muthoot Group and the chairman for this great gift, for me this is priceless. We would try to do our best this season and hope that we can win the IPL," he said. (IANS)

SUPPORT STAFF Head Coach: Eric Simons; Team Mentor: TA Sekar; Batting & Fielding Coach: Trent Woodhill. Team Manager: Aashish Kapoor; Strength & Conditioning Trainer : Robert Walter; Physiotherapist: Kirk Russell; Yoga trainer: James Harrington STRENGTHS The addition of Kevin Pietersen, Mahela Jayawardene and Ross Taylor provides much-needed solidity to the batting. Virender Sehwag and David Warner only know one way to bat, so no total will be potentially out of reach. Their pace attack has always been strong and the likes of Doug Bracewell and Andre Russell will add to it. Umesh Yadav and Varun Aaron's development is great news for the side. WEAKNESSES The one big grey area is their spin bowling. The side lacks quality and experience in this department. The injury to Ross Taylor hasn't helped the Devils' cause either.

Delhi Daredevils to bat for the country's adolescent girls

Indian Premier League (IPL) team Delhi Daredevils, in association with UNICEF, announced a new initiative on Friday to support adolescent girls across the country. The initiative, ‘Dare to Care', will see the two organisations work towards sensitising the public on the important role girls play in society and the necessity of education and protection for them. Extending his support for the initiative, Delhi Daredevils skipper Virender Sehwag said it was important to impart education to girls as it would help develop society. “They should also have the right to say no to certain things and they should be allowed to participate and give their opinion in family matters,” Sehwag said at a Press conference here. “It is not a good sign for India that so many girls do not get education. When we go out (to developed countries) we see women educated enough to do all sorts of work in the corporate sector, the media, etc. Our responsibility is to give Indian women the chance to do that.” According to facts released by UNICEF, almost 40 per cent of the adolescent girls in India do not attend school and an identical percentage of them get married before the legal age of 18 years. Around 56 per cent of the girls (between 15 and 19 years) are anaemic and vulnerable to poor maternal health. Karin Hulshof, UNICEF representative in India, listed the benefits of educating girls. “If a girl is educated, she tends to marry later and have children later. Her children are more likely to survive, be better nourished and better educated. To transform a developing country like India, it is important that boys and girls alike go to school,” she said. The most marginalised adolescent girls, according to UNICEF, can be categorised as those affected by harmful traditional practices, belonging to socially excluded and vulnerable groups, living in areas that are not secure, who do not have family protection and are excluded from education due to various reasons. Daredevils coach Eric Simons promised all help from his team to promote this initiative. “This is about real life and it can make such a difference. If our association does anything, we are winners.” Ajit Agarkar, another senior Daredevils player, added: “This is an important issue that needs to be addressed. Cricket is very popular in India, so it will be a good medium to spread awareness.” Kiran K. Grandhi, chairman of Daredevils' owner GMR Sports, described his team's involvement in the activity as “much more fulfilling than winning a match or a cup”. Daredevils' players will wear blue ribbons during their IPL matches to symbolise their support to the cause. The team will also donate a part of its ticket and merchandise sales and a percentage of auctioned collectible items.
Nice Initiative

PLAYERS TO WATCH OUT FOR Glenn Maxwell: Glenn Maxwell is a dashing batsman who plays for Victoria. He first shot into prominence was during the Emerging players tournament in July 2011 and many in the Delhi management found shades of David Warner in him. He is believed to be a brilliant fielder and he bowls decent off-spin. He is being touted as a future player for Australia and his all-round skills will give Delhi a lot of utility in this tournament. Robin Bist: He was one of the stars in the Ranji trophy this year. He was the only player to go past 1000 runs this year in the Ranji Trophy Elite championship, including four centuries as his batting helped Rajasthan secure their second consecutive Ranji trophy. His great form will be a welcome addition to the Delhi team. KEY PLAYERS TIMELINES: David Warner will miss the first month of the IPL as he is part of the Australian Test squad for the West Indies series. The Test series is expected to end on the on April 27th and he might play his first match against Rajasthan on 01st May. Ross Taylor's left wrist was broken by his Delhi team-mate Morne Morkel during the 3rd Test between New Zealand and South Africa at Wellington. He has undergone surgery and he is expected to be out of action for close to four weeks. It will be interesting to see whether he immediately starts playing after he has recovered from his injury.
