Judge Tendulkar by today's standards

Recommended Posts

BCL' date='SMG,Viv,Azza,Gower to name just a few .... Ponting also had a bad patch IIRC[/quote'] I rule out Gower and Azza since they obviously belong to second rung of great batsmen. Lets start with Viv now, considered by Sachin to be his idol. Here is the list of series where he badly performed in succession(came towards the end). Pakistan in West Indies 87/88@69.5 West Indies in England 88@37 West Indies in Australia@55 India in West Indies@27 Eng in West Indies@28 Aus in West Indies@25 West Indies in England@54 3 very good series, 3 bad and 1 average. Compare this to Sachins Australia in India 04/05 Sachin@17 South Africa in India04/05 Sachin@27.5 Pakistan in India 04/05 Sachin@51 Sri Lanka in India 05/06 Sachin@37.8 India in Pakistan 05/06 Sachin@21 England in India 05/06 Sachin@20 India in South Africa 06/07 Sachin@33 Current series Sachin@36 So your argument about Richards is clearly not valid. I also checked with Lara and I do not see similar poor performance though clearly he had his lows as well. SMG I did not check. xxx

The power of numbers. You should very well know about the series against Aus in 04/05, he was brought back even when not fit and still played a match winning knock in the only win. Again played match winning knocks against the lankans too (with customary dubious decisions) and he's been easily the top 2 in the last 2 tours as well, playing match winning knocks again. But feel free to keep repeating the same mantra, after all you're not a "worshipper" Laura had about 3 seasons below 35 avg IIRC.

Lurks heres Viv's numbers in two parts ...
1974-84 69 102 5 5247 291 232 192* 54.09 17 22 4
1985-91 52 80 7 3293 208 146 123 45.10 07 23 6
His avg dropped 9 points ... during the last 52 Tests (or 80 inngs) of his career. Lets look at SRT's last 50 Tests...
SRT Last 50 Tests 50 81 8 3648 248* 241* 194* 49.97 10 14 6

that is a drop of 5 points from his career avg.

BB, Do that for teams exluding BD and Zimbabwe. It falls below Viv's! I took out BD only and it came down to high 45, which included about 87 or so against Zimbabwe. xxx

You wanted Tendulkar dropped IIRC ... so who are you going to replace him (and the others ) with ?
Yes, from the test team. I am not an FC scout, some of the poor names that have propped up earlier, have been on the fringe and just sucking thumbs now could be given a chance or two. YVR's name comes to mind. I am sure our selectors have a good list with them, too bad they can't facking use it cause we have to keep playing the same guys for 15-20 years.

3304 Runs in 80 Innings .. exactly same as Vivs .... So if SRT sucks then Viv sucked too ... ohhhh touchy ehhh ? :giggle:
lol..Some coincidence there. But yes if you compare the two Viv comes out better overall. His lowest average(against a country) is in low 40s while Sachin's dips atleast three times under 30. While Viv's lowest average in same period(agaisnt a country) is 43 for Sachin it is 20 something. Not to mention that after the end of 50th test Richards retired, do you suggest Tendlya should retire too BB :D xx

Laras lean period was right smack in the middle of his career when he was still in his late twenties ... and it was between 1996 and 2001 .. he avg just 40 in that period over 89 innings ...
1996-2001 49 89 2 3485 213 182 153* 40.05 8 17 6

They should have droppped Lara in 2001 then ehhh  Want to move on to the Next candidate Lurks ? :D

Okay this is what I gleaned from CI. Start date 1996-01-01, end date 2001-12-31 Lara 52 Tests 4173 runs@ 44.87 This compared to Tendulkar's(excluding BD and Zimbabwe) 50 Tests 3184@44.2 Look it any which way you like but Lara's record even during the worst phase of his career is better than Tendulkar in his last 50 tests. Of course Tendulkar's stats are beefed up by an odd series here and there. You may have overlooked the fact that in the last 7 successive series SRT has put together runs@32. I would be interested if you could show me 7 successive series(or thereabouts) where Lara has been as bad. Actually I think the more we dig deeper the more we realize that Sachin's record is actually quite bad in last 50 Tests. Man for man he definitely performed worse than Viv Richards who was clearly on his last leg. And now it seems Sachin in his last 50 odd tests is worse than Lara when the latter was in the worst phase of his life(as per your timeframe mind you). Tell me where am I going wrong here. xxx

Lurkschange the end date to 2001-11-01 and see his avg drop almost 5 points :D
Hmm okay but wouldnt that be like taking 6 weeks out from a timeframe that is almost 6 years, or say 330 odd weeks. Plus that argument can be held against Tendulkar as well. If you take out SRT's series against Australia(03/04) his average gets to about 41, not very different from Lara in his worst phase. xx
