And these rates are for good theaters with comfortable seating and high quality digital sound. Wait for a few months and some movies are shown in cheaper cinemas called "Dollar" theaters where the price can be as low as $3 depending on the city. It makes sense to get discounted tickets coz you end up spending double that amount in popcorn and drinks. This is where the theaters make their money and they suck you in, knowing that movie goers love to munch on something as it just adds to the whole experience. But here also, people are known to cut corners like hiding snacks and bottles under the jacket or inside the purse. :D If you are taking a date with you for the movies, the whole deal can run upto $35-40...not exactly cheap yo, especially for students! At least one theater I know of in NJ does that already along with Bhel Puri and the assortments, though the quality isn't anything great. Also, the prices you mentioned seemed quite low - here it'll be difficult to find a show for less than $11-12 at regular timings, not sure about matinee.
