deathmonger
he's not ex yet. :--D also calling sachin his favourite may look a bit fanboyish as he is one of his contemporaries/friends. There will always be ppl who pick up the question but everyone knows now it has no merit unlike back in say, 2006. Then there were plenty of Lara - Tendulkar comparisons. After his second wind, you hardly hear Lara and Tendli in same breath anymore. Link to comment
deathmonger
dhoni > Sachin in ODIs. tendulkar outscores dhoni in longevity. dhoni a better match winner. dhoni - captain, wk-keeper, fitter, faster between the wkts. tendulkar - an all time great but over-rated among indian fans, not sure whether 'over-rated' is even applicable for all time greats. This Tendulkar not being a matchwinner is way way overrated. Tendulkar played the bulk of his cricket in a very poor side and only in the later half of his career has he had the privilege of being part of a decent team. People citing Dhoni's innings, how many have been single handed? World cup final 91 was built after Gambhir's magnificent 97. Yesterday match Rahane/Gambhir had an amazing partnership and gave him a platform to work with. In so many matches Raina and Yuvraj have played support role alongside him. Doesn't take any credit away from Dhoni but if Sachin had a few decent players in his team he'd have won a lot more matches than he has. Link to comment
kabira
still not convinced about the Best.. i still remember WC game against Australia.. what a rackless shot he played.. Bevan was in tough situation playing with tailenders plenty of times and won lot of games.. Dhoni still needs to prove few things before he can be called the Best.. Gem of a team player though.. !! are you kidding? how on the earth was that shot reckless, it was bad ball, he played his favorite cut shot and just could not get placement right, hows that reckless. Its cricket not everything can go you way. How many games did Bevan win with tailenders??? Do you have a count?? Let me give one instance where Bevan did not finish the game. Titan Cup last do or die game. He and Slater were crusing, but Bevan gives his wicket away and game over for Aussies. Link to comment

jairamesh
Still early days since Dhoni is still only 30, but considering he will be overtaking Bevan soon in total ODI runs with a 50+ average, I think Dhoni is the best ODI player in terms of finishing an innings (setting a score or chasing). Bevan never had the extra gear to hit sixes at will, he was all about hard running and finding that crucial boundary, whilst Dhoni does that and brings that hard hitting game (plus no other role in cricket then captaining India brings so much load in terms of pressure and expectations, and now days Dhoni even takes the flake from the anti-BCCI brigade) Link to comment
hiha
dont compare dhoni nd bevan...bevan played in fast nd difficult batting tracks in australia nd faced dangerous bowling of d 1990`s........bevan average 55 is madness.....make dhoni play in australian tracks rather than flat tracks, we`lll know d difference....bevan made impossible possible chasing 100`s of runs with tail enders, example 241 in mcg against nzl......dhoni had a flop tour of south africa .......................but both of them have one thing in common, both r flop test players :haha:...........................no offence meant 2 msd , he still played dat xcellent 91 Link to comment

Manny_Pacquiao
haha, nice thread. i brought up the comparison a few days ago. dhoni is the greatest middle order batsman in the history of ODI cricket. i really can't think of anyone better. if michael bevan had a power game, he would be dhoni. dhoni is capable of doing whatever bevan could - flawless strike rotation, partnership building; whether it's anchoring or leading, powerful running between the wickets - along with a big hitting ability that bevan NEVER had. that is the key difference between the two. dhoni could target a bowler and take one big over off him if the situation demands it. Bevan could never do that. Bevan has never produced anything close to some of the whirlwind innings dhoni has played. statistically, there isnt a big difference either. bevan has a bigger average, but dhoni has held his at 47-48 since the beginning of his career and pushed 50. dhoni's strike rate is miles better, which only highlights the difference that a power game can make. at the end of the day, dhoni is your ideal ODI batsman. big average, big strike rate, powerful runner - which is important because he can make up for a lack of boundaries just by running hard - big striker, and very consistent run scorer in the end overs. if you were to imagine what the perfect ODI middle order batsman would be, dhoni would come closest to whatever you have in mind. vamos_rafa
There are a few players who set up a match for you and other who finish it for you. Sachin falls under the first category, while MSD falls under the second one. Link to comment
Sidhoni
The reason why Dhoni has not won many games single-handedly is bcoz he makes the other batsman comfortable and cools him down which results in partnerships, and the other batsmen also give useful contributions Link to comment

After one of CL t20 games(I know it's tamasha kirkut), in which Bravo had gone berzerk, he actually mentioned that it all started with MSD being at the other end. Now, technically speaking, I don't recall him hitting any boundary or any forcing shot, but if we keep aside the conspiracy theory of Bravo trying to retain his place and hence saying that, there would have been some degree of truth in whatever he said.
