This is hilaiorus ..6.8 mn for what. I think this article shud be put in the 'wtf thread' as well

Colombo: Muttiah Muralitharan has demanded millions of dollars from former Indian spinner Bishan Singh Bedi as damages for making "derogatory" comments questioning Muralitharan's bowling action, an aide said on Tuesday. "It's a letter of demand that we have sent (Bedi)," Muralitharan's manager, Kushil Gunasekera, said. Gunasekera said Bedi had recently commented that Muralitharan bowled with an illegal action, and called him a "cheat". The International Cricket Council has created a "monster" of Muralitharan and set a bad precedent by not taking any action against him, Gunasekera quoted Bedi as saying. "These are derogatory (remarks), and of a personal nature," Gunasekera said. He said Muralitharan's lawyers have demanded 750 million Sri Lankan rupees ($6.7 million; €4.9 million) from Bedi as damages. Bedi, 60, was an accomplished left-arm spin bowler during his playing days in 1960s and 70s. In 67 Test matches he took 267 wickets. The controversy comes with Muralitharan just eight wickets away from a world record for highest number of Test victims, surpassing retired Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne. Muralitharan's success at international cricket comes from his exceptional ability to turn the ball, using a wristy action and an elbow bent since birth. His 15-year career has been surrounded by controversy since 1995, when Australian umpire Darrell Hair called him for "chucking" during a Test match in Melbourne. His action was subsequently cleared by an Australian biomechanics expert, but was no-balled again in Australia in 1998 and reported by English match referee Chris Broad in Sri Lanka in 2004. The ICC, after a major investigation, ruled that his action is legal. Gunasekera said that the lawyers have given Bedi 14 days to respond and will later decide whether to file court action against him.
Murali has lost his mind

How did he arrive at the figure? Not that I think Murali chucks, I am one his biggest defenders but a lawsuit without a justification for the amount being demanded will stand no chance, IMO.
Shwetabh , I am sure you would have realized that this is not about money. This is more about shutting up people who think they can get away with whatever they say in public. This case is not so much for money , its more about deterrent. Still , if the judge doesnt award such huge damages , they will be atleast summons sent to Bedi. That is enough to shut up all loose mouths for good. Didnt Bedi realize that he could be sued for whatever he is saying on T.V/news ? Maybe he did this deliberately , knowing he couldnt be legally caught for whatever he said and went after cheap publicity. Just the vitriolic nature of comments leaves me convinced about one thing -- All this senile old man wanted to do was get in the news.

Excuse me ? Murali has lost his head ? You must be kidding ! Bedi is the one who has lost his head.. and soon , he will lose his house too.
bhaisaab whatever bedi may have said was wrong ..thats his opinion.recently ian chappel criticised tendli saying he is playing only for records did tendli go ahead and filed a suit against chappel for defamation ......no the best murali thing was to do was just to let it lie or best ask for apology.... but to ask for 6.8 mn just for calling him a short putter is ridiculous

You are missing the basic difference here. It is ok to express opinion on the cricketing future of players , be it good or bad, but its an entirely different matter to call Murali ( who is essentially one of the greatest figures of Sri Lanka) names like " Javelin thrower" , "monster" etc. What Bedi is doing is insulting one of Sri Lanka's icons , its pride. Its about time he is shut up, for good.

yes agree bedi shud shut up... murali is an icon .but as shwetabh said earlier whats the justifcation for such an amount. what he cud have done was file a case in court asking for a public apology in print media .that wud have been more appropriate rather than filing suit for ridiculous amount of money

As i said before Suma , the case isnt so much for money , as it is to scare people from making those ridiculous statements. The astronomical figure is just another step to this effect. And just to let you know , this case will go nowhere. If at all matters do get serious , there will some personal parleys and case dropped after " mutual agreement of both parties". The lawyers would proclaim to the public that "Bedi explained the circumstances in which those statements were made and Murali accepted them and has withdrawn the cases. Murali has deep respect for Bedi , which for re-emphasized after this incident" blah blah..

looks like people like bedi lack basic common sense and don't understand what rules are for. like i mentioned in another thread, once the speed limit has been changed from 55 mph to 65 mph, you will look like an idiot if you keep ticketing those who are now driving at 65 mph.
