Re: ISHANT SHARMA FAST BOWLER MAY GET CHANCE doubt he will be selected. but this is goofy stuff from BCCI - its one thing to send a kid with 5 FC games under his belt to join the team on a home series - quite another to fly him out to South Africa. How are the other bowlers working their asses off in Ranji supposed to feel after this? What about that kashmiri kid we kept hearing about last year - At 20 he's probably too old for these BCCI babus to grace with their favor. This is NOT how you cultivate a healthy strong farm system for your team - you do that by rewarding steady consistent performers and true stand-out talents. We have, after zimbabwe and mugabe's cronies, quite possibly the worst cricket board in the world.

Re: ISHANT SHARMA FAST BOWLER MAY GET CHANCE i dont understand Indian selection policy, why not give a chance to players who have already performed at the interntational level players like Balaji or Nehra who have been quite successful at times. Now is the the time to build up for the world cup not nurture youngsters.

Re: ISHANT SHARMA FAST BOWLER MAY GET CHANCE sure, I guess you could say that. but do we really want to be that bad that we are comparing ourselves to dictatorstan? I'd rather compare with the kiwis, aussies etc. I know that Sl, Wi also have their share of problems, but that doesn't take away from the fact that BCCI is staffed by a bunch of senile ignorant political crooks :wall:

Re: ISHANT SHARMA FAST BOWLER MAY GET CHANCE As sandeep says there are so many pacers ahead of him..Gagan and SS Paul spring to mind..Perhaps even Joginder Sharma...the 'kashmiri kid' is Abid Nabi- definitely not test class i wouldn't think The board have said 'if need be'...so lets hope not. Anyways check the para in bold, he wont actually play Im not sure hes ready for test cricket yet...he NEEDS a few seasons in Ranji...he needs to get a bit quicker , which will come with time lets face it hes what- 19?? --------------- India in South Africa 2006-07 Ishant Sharma likely to join squad in SA Anand Vasu December 26, 2006 Ishant Sharma, the 18-year-old Delhi mediumpacer, is likely be sent to South Africa ahead of the final Test in Newlands, Cape Town. Sharma, currently playing in only his fifth first-class match, is likely to join the squad before the final Test. With Irfan Pathan being sent back to India to play domestic cricket, and Munaf Patel yet to regain full fitness from an ankle injury, Sharma may be asked to step in and fill the breach in the squad, should the need arise, through another injury. When contacted, Niranjan Shah, secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, would neither confirm nor deny the story. "If the need arises for a replacement, and the team management feels the shortcoming, then the selectors will discuss the matter over the telephone and decide on a replacement," Shah told Cricinfo. Rahul Dravid, speaking at the toss ahead of the second Test, said that Munaf was not yet fully fit, but did stress that he was only "two or three days" from where the team wanted him to be, suggesting that he would be fit in time for the next Test. However, it is learnt that the preparations to get Sharma across to South Africa are already under way. "We want him [sharma] to see what happens at the highest level," said a senior Indian board official and an unimpeachable source, who did not want to be named for obvious reasons. "We believe it will be good for his development." Although this goes against the grain of what the board secretary told Cricinfo on the record, it corroborates all the other indications received from the team management and sources in South Africa. Should he go, it is unlikely that Sharma will figure in the playing eleven, but it is believed that he is being sent to South Africa to get a feel of international cricket and the Indian dressing-room and to obtain firsthand guidance from Greg Chappell, the Indian coach, and Ian Fraser, a member of the support staff. Sharma plays for the Rohtak Road Gymkhana Club in Delhi and, though in his debut first-class season, has a couple of Under-19 tours under his belt. He's currently playing for Delhi against Saurashtra in Rajkot, where he has 3 for 117 from 36 overs; prior to this match he'd picked up 19 wickets from four games, with one five-wicket haul against Baroda. His USP is the ability to extract unnerving bounce, thanks mainly to his build - Sharma is six feet four inches tall and lanky, and is nicknamed Lambu for obvious reasons. Sharma's cause has probably been helped by the fact that Dilip Vengsarkar, the chairman of selectors, was in Delhi a couple of weeks ago watching him bowl in a Ranji trophy match against Tamil Nadu. On a shirtfront of a Kotla wicket, where the ball barely carried through to the keeper, Sharma put in a good effort. Lalchand Rajput, the coach of the Indian U-19 team, was impressed with Sharma's bowling, and apart from praising the bowler in the media had also conveyed his thoughts to the BCCI.

Re: ISHANT SHARMA FAST BOWLER MAY GET CHANCE guys.... he was chosen ahead of the experienced seamers higher in the pecking order for a reason.... it was to fast-track his growth.... it was clearly mentioned he was not going to play.... every move doesnt have to be aimed at making the board look like a loony board like PCB... he is very talented, but bowlers like RP, Nehra and Balaji have much more experience..... hence, they are jus trying to get him exposure without the pressure.....

Re: ISHANT SHARMA FAST BOWLER MAY GET CHANCE Never heard of him either. Bit of googling revealed this- Tall fast bowlers have been a rarity in Indian cricket. Ishant Sharma, 6'4" and still growing, touches the 130kph mark consistently and also possesses a sharp and deceptive bouncer delivered from a high-arm action that leaves batsmen on their toes. He started to play serious cricket at 14, rose quickly through the ranks and played Ranji Trophy one-dayers for Delhi this season, and a Deodhar Trophy game as well. His relatively frail physique is a worry but if he is looked after, he could well scale the heights. http://content-usa.cricinfo.com/india/content/current/player/236779.html 64610.1.jpghttp://www.thehinduimages.com/hindu/mySearch.do?command=hotlink&searchString=ISHANT%20SHARMA At 6 feet 4 inches, Ishant was by far the best speedster on display. His 35 wickets at Under-17 and amp; 19 level are enough proof of his talent.

Re: ISHANT SHARMA FAST BOWLER MAY GET CHANCE Why do our selectors believe in fast tracking players? Give the guy a few seasons in FC. He isn't going anywhere and we don't need another fast bowler now. Pick him now, he fails and then he gets his confidence shattered. Give him a few seasons to bulk up, gain some more experience and then come at 23/24.

Re: ISHANT SHARMA FAST BOWLER MAY GET CHANCE I hope you are right and he turns out like Imran :wtg: It's just that his photo plus the comment on cricinfo made me think.

In this photos he looks ok to me- http://www.thehinduimages.com/hindu/photoDetail.do?photoId=6791155 You are right that to be fast you don't have to be muscular. That said you have to be very fit.

Re: ISHANT SHARMA FAST BOWLER MAY GET CHANCE Fantastic news ! The team and the coaching staff are going some way to redeem themselves here ! Here you have an immensely talented kid, just 19 years of age - who has managed to claw his way through the DDCA's net of corruption which has hindered the careers of f*ck knows how many youngsters. Those of you who are unfamiliar with Delhi cricket won't know about this...but take it from someone who does (ie; me) - DDCA is by far the most corrupt cricketing body in India. Nepotism and goonda-gardi is rife, and there have been instances of young cricketers with connections in high places threatening ex-coach Madan Lal. In such grave circumstances, this young lad Ishant has got through purely on merit and talent - which says a lot. Now he is currently outperforming an ex-Indian international Ashish Nehra on dead pitches...regularly taking 3 and 4 wicket hauls. He took a 4 wicket haul on his List 'A' debut and has been earmarked as one for the future by Lalchand Rajput - the u19 coach. He is a tall, bowls in the mid 130's and gets bounce out of the most benign tracks. A talent like this should never be left to languish in the sh*thole that is Indian FC cricket. The team has made the right move by plucking him out of obscurity...the experience he gets at this age is vital for his development as a fast bowler.
