Deadly shooting near New York's Empire State BuildingAdvertisement Police Commissioner Ray Kelly: "A disgruntled former employee... shot and killed a former co-worker" Continue reading the main story Related Stories In pictures: New York shooting A fired women's apparel designer shot dead a former colleague outside the Empire State Building in New York City before he was killed by police. Nine others were hit by bullets, some possibly fired by police, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said. Those wounded suffered minor injuries and all were expected to survive. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly named the shooter as 53-year-old Jeffrey Johnson, who lived in Manhattan. His victim was a 41-year-old man. The shootout took place in the heart of Manhattan, in front of one of the world's most widely recognised landmarks, soon after 09:00 (13:00 GMT) when the area was packed with commuters and tourists. "This was a terrible tragedy. We are not immune to the national problem of gun violence," Mayor Bloomberg said. 'Disgruntled worker' Commissioner Kelly said the suspect had been fired about a year ago from his job at Hazan Imports, located near the Empire State Building. He said Johnson was laid off during downsizing after six years as an employee. The gunman and his victim had traded accusations of harassment when they worked together, Commissioner Kelly added. Eyewitness: "I heard multiple gunshots but thought they were firecrackers at first" He said the "disgruntled" worker fatally shot a former colleague in the head. Armed with a .45 calibre pistol, he fired at his victim three times. Commissioner Kelly said that a construction worker followed the gunman, and alerted two police officers on duty outside the Empire State Building. Surveillance video showed the attacker pulling his gun out of a bag and pointing it at two officers. The police then fired 14 rounds and killed Johnson, Commissioner Kelly added. Johnson is not thought to have had a criminal record. Officials do not yet know whether the attacker's gun was acquired legally. There was a heavy police presence earlier at the scene on 34th Street and Fifth Avenue, and the FBI also attended. Television helicopters hovered overhead filming the scene, where a body could be seen covered in a white sheet. Federal officials said the shooting was not related to terrorism. Fifth Avenue, a major traffic artery in the city, was closed from 42nd street. 'Stream of blood' Witnesses described people running away from the scene. "People were yelling 'Get down! Get down!" accountant Marc Engel, who was on a bus when the gunshots rang out, told the Associated Press. The 41-year-old victim has not been identified "It took about 15 seconds, a lot of 'pop, pop, pop, pop', one shot after the other." Afterwards, people who had been wounded were lying on the pavement and one person was "dripping enough blood to leave a stream", Mr Engel added. Rebecca Fox, 27, said she saw people running down the street and initially thought it was a celebrity sighting. Then she saw a dead man on the ground. "I was scared and shocked and literally shaking," she said. Eyewitnesses said the gunman had been wearing a business suit. One woman, Aliyah Imam, told TV station Fox 5 News that the attacker was "shooting indiscriminately at people". She said a young woman standing next to her fell to the ground after being shot. One of New York's most popular tourist attractions, the Empire State Building is a 1,453-ft (442-metre) skyscraper, which attracts nearly four million visitors a year. The tower also has offices and the area is bustling with workers on weekday mornings. The shooting comes less than two weeks after a man wielding a knife was shot dead by police near another busy landmark, Times Square. Police say Darrius Kennedy, 51, had been smoking marijuana and was killed after lunging at officers with a kitchen knife.

Nine people were wounded and two people were killed outside the Empire State Building in Midtown Manhattan Friday after a disgruntled women's accessories designer shot his. The two dead include the gunman, who was shot and killed by police near the tourist entrance of the landmark skyscraper. Fifty-three year-old Jeffrey Johnson lost his job last year during a corporate downsizing at Hazan Imports, where Steven Ercolino, 41, was a vice president. He returned to his office Friday morning to target his former supervisor. The shooting occurred at 9:03 a.m. ET on West 33rd Street. Johnson followed his former co-worker down 33rd Street and shot him outside of Legends Bar, according to the New York Post. It is unclear if he fired into a crowd of pedestrians outside of the Empire State Building, or if pedestrians were caught in crossfire, reported the New York Daily News. A construction worker who witnessed the shooting followed the suspect and then alerted police who were posted nearby. As the officers approached Johnson, he pulled his gun and fired on the officers. They returned fire and killed him, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said. None of the other people who were shot were seriously wounded and they are all expected to recover. Some of those wounded may have been hit by police gunfire, Bloomberg said. After the shooting, police immediately cordoned off a one-block perimeter around the Empire State Building. Around 10 a.m., a lone tourist bus headed down Fifth Avenue, and a guide could be heard over the bus's microphone explaining that they were nearing the landmark. As police waved the bus to detour down 36th Street, the guide was openly mystified. "I don't know what's going on, folks," he said, as the bus turned. The bus's passengers looked up at the sky at a news helicopter floated overhead. Some stood, clutching their cameras. Along 35th street, hundreds of people photographed the scene with iPhones and iPads. Officers could be seen standing in the middle of 34th Street around a scene surrounded by police tape. Television producers roamed the crowd looking for witnesses. "Was anybody here when this happened? Was anybody here when this happened?" one NBC producer yelled. Word of the shooting spread rapidly on social media networks. "On 5th avenue surrounded by helicopters and police," @CeciliaHalling wrote on Twitter. "I'm very glad I wasn't 20 blocks further down half an hour ago."

But if the kid of the liftman had his own gun, he could have shot up his own school thus causing the liftman to miss work, which would have made the shooter 2 mins late, hence spoiling his plan. See, guns help, we just dont have enough of them

Where's the Republican chap on ICF? Would love to hear his thoughts on this. I just feel that there is the outside possibility that this is staged. Many say that the Democrats are keen to enforce a bill which clamps down the private possession of arms. And well what better way to turn people off their guns than through such incidents. It sends a very powerful message, ur not even safe in the empire State Building. And what I find rather fishy is the contradictory reports that keep coming out. Like for instance it's always a lone loony shooter, despite most public accounts clearly stating that there was more than one. For instance the Aurora shootings. This is just another line of thought. But it should be interesting to dissect.

Rich man's Taliban.
The shootings so far: 1. In a gurudwara by a white supremacist who mistook Sikhs for Muslims. 2. In a movie theatre by a pHD neuroscience drop out 3. In a university by a student who got served an eviction notice 4. In central NYC by an ex employer disgruntled with a previous co worker. Yep, guns are totally effective as a means of self protection! Even the Taliban aren't stupid enough to go shooting around their own people when they can't solve their problems.
