The Irani Cup fixture has been moved from Jaipur after the BCCI grounds and pitches committee chairman reported the conditions "unplayable" upon inspection More... Heavy rains force Irani Cup out of Jaipur Nagraj Gollapudi September 8, 2012 The Irani Cup fixture has been moved from Jaipur after the BCCI grounds and pitches committee chairman reported the conditions "unplayable" upon inspection. Venkat Sundaram, the committee chairman, visited the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Saturday and found the venue unsuitable for the September 21 domestic season opening clash between defending champions Rajasthan and Rest of India, despite desperate measure being put by the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA). "Because of heavy rains the playing conditions are not likely to improve," Sanjay Jagdale, BCCI secretary, told ESPNcricinfo. "Venkat Sundaram inspected the outfield and the wicket today and felt it would not be playable in the short period. We are now in the process of finding an alternate venue." Sundaram, who inspected the ground for about an hour in the morning, was "concerned" about the pitch, which he felt was in no condition to stage the match. "The outfield could be improved. But he [sundaram] felt it would be difficult to prepare the pitch in time - it needs top dressing which would mean at least four to six weeks of work," an RCA official said. "There is lot of water on and around the pitch still due to the rains. There was also fungus on the grass as the ground was locked for two months," the official said. Sundaram advised the groundsman and the RCA officials, including secretary KK Sharma, to take necessary measures to make the ground match fit for the rest of the season. The news would come as a setback for the RCA, which had been embroiled in a stalemate with the Rajasthan Sports Council (owners of the ground) since July and had been allowed entry to the ground only earlier this week. Despite not having access to the ground for two months, Taposh Chatterjee, the head groundsman at the RCA, was confident about getting the ground ready for the match. However, the inclement weather posed a threat to the preparation. "The biggest challenge would be the weather. Otherwise we are confident to get the ground ready in a couple of weeks," an RCA official had said on Tuesday.

U-19 stars set to get a look-in?

KOLKATA: A handful of stars from India's U-19 World Cup winning squad are set to be rewarded with berths in the Rest of India squad for the Irani Trophy when the national selectors meet in Mumbai on Monday. Rest of India will take on Ranji Trophy champions Rajasthan in the five-day showpiece match that headlines the domestic cricket calendar. The BCCI is yet to name an alternate venue for the Irani Trophy after chief curator Venkat Sundaram deemed the pitch and ground conditions at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium - Rajasthan's home ground - unfit to host the match to be played from Sept 21 to 25. In the absence of Team India's limited-overs specialists, who will be playing in the T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka and the India 'A' players who will be touring New Zealand, the selectors plan to have a good look at the youngsters in the heat of first-class cricket. At least four U-19 stars - left-arm spinner Harmeet Singh, pacer Sandeep Sharma, wicketkeeper-batsman Smit Patel and allrounder Baba Aparajith - are likely to figure in the ROI squad. Bengal pacer Ravikant Singh will also figure prominently in the deliberations. Under-19 skipper Unmukt Chand has already been picked for India A's tour of Kiwiland. The ROI squad is likely to be led by Cheteshwar Pujara, fresh from his exploits against the Kiwis in the two-Test series. Tamil Nadu's S Badrinath and Mumbai's Ajinkya Rajane, who were also part of the Test squad along with Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav are also expected to make the cut. It would be as good an opportunity as any for Ishant to test his form and fitness after having warmed the bench during the series against New Zealand. Delhi opener Shikhar Dhawan and Tamil Nadu's Murli Vijay too could find themselves in the fray along with the out-of-favour allrounders Ravindra Jadeja and Yusuf Pathan. Unless pacers Varun Aaron and S Sreesanth have miraculously recovered from their long-term injuries, Munaf Patel and Assam's Abu Nachim could find themselves in the mix. The stage is perfect for Sachin Tendulkar to get some useful match practice, but the selectors, in absence of any indication about his availability, are reluctant to name him. As things stand, the Little Master will be sounded out before the selection committee meets, and if he shows eagerness to play, his will certainly be the first name on the team list. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/sports/cricket/top-stories/U-19-stars-set-to-get-a-look-in/articleshow/16330806.cms

Searching for form, Sachin may figure in Irani Cup

As debates about whether Sachin TendulkarÃÔ age has finally caught up with him continue to rage on, the national selectors are planning to include the 39-year-old in the Rest of India (ROI) squad for the upcoming Irani Cup. With the Indian team set to be away for the World T20 starting mid-September, there is no cricket lined up for Tendulkar. And the Kris Srikkanth-led national selection committee whose term comes to an end this month are said to have a word with the Mumbai veteran before announcing the ROI squad on Monday. Ÿe feel it will be best for him to gain some confidence before he gets ready for England. His experience promises to be crucial for the Indian team over the next 12 months. We are certain that Sachin will be back to his best soon, a selector said on condition of anonymity. ŵendulkar will be part of the Champions League starting next month in South Africa. But we feel that domestic cricket is the best place to gain form. We will also ask him whether he will be interested to play Challengers, the selector added. If selected, the Irani Cup encounter which starts on September 21 will be TendulkarÃÔ first in the competition since 2003. His last domestic game, meanwhile, came in early 2009 when he was part of the victorious Mumbai team for the semi-final and final of the Ranji Trophy.http://www.indianexpress.com/news/searching-for-form-sachin-may-figure-in-irani-cup/1000289/ Very good news. I hope Sachin does play the Irani trophy. In fact all those not playing the T20 WC should be named in the Rest of India squad- Sachin, Pujara, Ojha, Umesh Yadav, Ishant (if fit).

Think he means Manvinder Bisla. Interesting to note that Robin Bist who was not included in the India A side , perhaps due to the injury he suffered in WI, has been named in the Rajasthan squad for Irani Trophy. I wonder if Saha and Awana will now get named in the ROI squad having failed to get a spot in the A side. As for the u-19 team, too early to give them a break.Let them at least play a season of domestic cricket.

None of the U-19 guys should get a shot at the Irani Trophy. Let them first prove that they are good enough at the FC level.

Saha is apparently fit now. Should logically be in the ROI team along with Awana.

The ROI XI would possibly be: 1) Rahane 2) Vijay 3) Pujara 4) Badri 5) Dhawan 6) S Binny/Manish Pandey 7) Saha 8) Harmeet Singh 9) Ishant Sharma 10) Parvinder Awana 11) Sandeep Sharma Reserves - Sachin, Yadav On second thoughts, Harmeet Singh and Sandeep Sharma can be given a shot.
what happened to darekar guy ? there is no consistency in selection dont think pujara will play he is already in indian team ishant hmm thats a gr8 idea actually

Why Sachin/Yadav in reserves? They both should play. Why Dhawan in middle order when Scahin can play there? Sandeep Sharma too did not anything special in FC season. Yadav should play there.

Darekar would be in New Zealand. The choice is between Amit Mishra, Harmeet Singh, Shahbaz Nadeem and KP Apanna. I'd choose Harmeet. Pujara should play. The best available players should play.

This team is not really my wishlist, I'm rather anticipating who all the selection committee would go for. Going by Dhawan's last year FC record and his tour to WI, he has no case. But again, the selection committee might have other thoughts. Sachin and Yadav are in reserves simply because I doubt they'll play. If willing, they'll obviously be the first-choice players. I'd still be tempted to see what Sandeep Sharma can do at a stage like this if given the opportunity. Of course he was ordinary in the FC season last year and Abu Nechim might be in the team if he is fit.
