There are two very serious points that must not get lost on anyone in the shadow of the other: 1. Senseless rioting and killing innocent people never achieves anything. Nothing at all. It must not be allowed at any cost whatsoever. 2. People should not be allowed to make such idiotic films on the name of freedom of speech. Making fun of or humiliating those you dislike in an insensitive way is not a civilized way of expressing an opinion or making a point. If someone in the society wishes to express anti-religious views, they should do so in a more civilized manner.
The question is even if 2 happens in the worst case scenario, 1 can not be a justification. You don't like it, don't watch it. For example, I don't support child pornography I don't watch it. I don't go around killing people who have children. That's atrocious!

This is usually how it ends. There is only one way for the world to move and that is forward. And if we give up the fight against angry, illogical attacks of collective Id then we will have no one to blame but us.

Any individual who is part of these type of mobs should be arrested and sent back to their country of choice, they dont deserve to live in pluralistic societies, if no muslim country wants to take them create another australia (some remote land mass) and send these guys over there, with no possible avenue of exit. They can live within that land and protest to their hearts content. Curtailing freedom of speech is a slippery slope and should never ever be encouraged, every one and everything in the public domain has the right to be criticzed, made fun of, be vulgarish and do whatever people want to do with it. To people who get offended, please get a life or take your offense within your own places.Disgraceful pathetic idiots
That is a seriously dangerous line of thinking. Disowning people is never a solution to any problem. They are wrong, they are criminals, they deserve to be punished. But you never ever disown citizens. Communal differences have existed in India for a long time. Sometimes it's based on religion, sometimes on race (recent attacks on north-east Indians, sometimes on caste or other things. How many people are you going to disown? This is exactly how whites used to talk about blacks a few decades ago - send them back to their country, they are the reason for law and order problems in our country. You are doing nothing but promoting the same old idea in a new context.

I dont know how you relate this to a white black issue, if the revolt that happened was right ( in the sense for a righteous cause), I would gladly welcome the riot. But the insanity of innocent bystanders suffering (death or otherwise), because someone gets 'offended' by someone else's words or actions is insane to the extremes. Usually crimes fall into certain common motives, crimes of passion, crimes of need/greed, or mentally unstable perperators. These kind of demonstrations, really are due to mentally unstable individuals but the difference is they are not clinically mentally unstable but only in this facet of life. So the typical punishments for other crimes dont fall in line with these. Do you think regular punishments will change this mob mentality where people assume they can achieve their goals through mass rioting where their strength is not in the cause, but in numbers?

Sorry I can not agree to that. You have to realize DK, that this whole notion comes down to feelings being hurt of only one religion only, namely Muslims. And yes I am pretty darn sure that the man who created/made this movie did so with an axe to grind namely show Islam and Prophet Mohammed in a bad light. But why are Muslims so insecure that some no-name chap whose movie was literally seen by nobody, much less celebrated as a masterpiece, ensured such a response that it ended up killing a dozen or two around the world?? This is serious. If there trivial, speaking from my vantage point, matters are enough to get people killed what happens when we have a serious, lot more controversial topics?? Pray then we can simply expect to have a qayamat on hand.

Let me ask a question from the people who are against this movie and free speech. How come religious people can stop gays from getting married, something which doesnt affect life of religious people but still they have a right to not only interfere but also limit what relationship same sex couple can have. So where does the freedom and free speech start and end ? These 2 issues dont seem related but if you try to understand my point then you'll realize that if you are part of the bunch of people who believe in the same non-existent thing then you can change rules for all, if you dont then you cant even get the rules changed for yourself. So who gives the right to religious people to riot or even complain when other have no voice and even their opinion isnt valued. Where is the limit and how do we define it ?

:WTF: What kind of logic is that? How can you "welcome" a riot? This is almost like Osama Bin Laden's Good Jihad - Bad Jihad philosophy. Did you have something else in mind and it came out incorrectly?

Are you sure on this? Yes - Muslims may get offended most of the times but there are others too who do get offended at every book, movie or art which does not display their religion in the manner they don't want to.

Why wouldnt you welcome a riot when it has right origins? - for example Indians revolting against the British government during pre independence days ? ok riot maybe the wrong word, lets call it a revolt, but otherwise what abt the rest of my post? PS I would say the same for the people in Gujarat riots (the Hindus who went about the massacres, and any other religion too).

Sorry DK, have to disagree there. The filmmaker is not the cause of these riots. Other religions are routinely made fun of in the US, both in a satirical and a harsh manner. They have consistently defended the freedom of speech regardless of who is being targeted. If Muslims cannot take criticism of their religion, it is entirely their problem. The world doesnt owe anything to Islam or any other religion for that matter that it should consider their symbols sacred. People are free to protest peacefully but the moment they break the law, they should be arrested and punished accordingly.

How many Indian movies have we seen where filmmakers show Yamraaj-The god of death or many other mythological characters in a funny way.....Forget about burning down theatres, riots or Killing people....We all enjoy these movies and most of these movies become b.o successes too... Da Vinci Code and the other Dan brown Novel(???) that was made into a movie... became a huge controversy in India but in Most country where Christianity is practiced...the movie was hugely succesful... Passion of the Christ which had anti-semitic undertones was a wide b.o hit Sikhs have been traditionally shown as caricatures in so many movies Infact when all these mainstream movies did not result in violence and riots.....how can there be any justification of this kind of behavior from something as obsolete as this obscure doccumentary? Infact I agree above with Desi Cartman...Couldn't even watch the whole video as it got too boring

IIRC the official stand of the Church AFAIK was that "Go watch the movie and return in better faith". Also, I am surprised to hear the "Passion of Christ" had anti-semitic undertones! It was just a pure depiction of the Bible.

There seem to be so many apologists in every other religion apart from the one we are discussing here.....I am not sterotyping anyone or saying the entire religion is bad...it could only be 10% of 5% of the whole community that partakes in such stuff....Hell the Gujrat rioters were not even 0.5% of the total Hindu populace but we see millions and millions of apologists popping up every day.... No matter how secular or forwad thinking the remaining 90%-95% are...I have never ever heard one statement with regards to understanding the problem. that lies within..It's always the defensive argument and the victim card.. There is no justification for violence but when you see a problem you need to say it out
