Zaheer Khan, Umesh Yadav doubtful for Australia series

MUMBAI: There is a big question mark over India's leading pace bowlers Zaheer Khan and Umesh Yadav making it to the national team for the first two of the four-match Test series against Australia starting on February 22. Zaheer is yet to recover from the calf-injury that left him stranded during one of Mumbai's Ranji Trophy league matches last month. On Wednesday, the bowler was at Bangalore's National Cricket Academy (NCA). Reports from the academy suggest that he has been advised "some more rest" before he regains full fitness (approximately two weeks). The injury has ruled Zaheer out of the Mumbai squad for the Irani Trophy against Rest of India starting February 6, and the two warm-up matches against the visiting Australians who will arrive next month. Yadav, suffering from a lower-back stress injury, missed the last three of the four Tests against England and is still recovering. The youngster from Nagpur is a serious case-study for someone who has been mercilessly over-bowled in the last one year. Yadav played the three-Test series against the West Indies in November 2011, flew to Australia in early 2012 for the four-Test series and the ODIs, played the Indian Premier League which was followed by the two-Test series against New Zealand, the Twenty20 Champions League and finally the first Test against England in Ahmedabad after which he broke down. Presently recuperating at home, Yadav is expected to take another three weeks before he can regain fitness. India's preparations for the Test series against Australia are likely to begin with the Irani Trophy, followed by the two warm-up matches against Australia. These matches will also help the selectors keep an eye on all pace-bowling options available to choose from. While this is Yadav's first painful brush with injury post his international debut, Zaheer has suffered several injuries in the past and was on the verge of breaking down all through the past year before the selectors finally decided to drop him for the Nagpur Test against England. With no opportunities to prove his form and match fitness in the coming two weeks, his selection for the Test series against Australia remains a very unlikely prospect. Yadav, meanwhile, is not just bearing the brunt of a packed schedule. Sources say most Team India batsmen insist on facing him during pre-match nets and other practice sessions as he is one of the fastest bowlers in the country. That has taken a further toll on him.

Strong bowling attack with Siddle, Jhonson, Pattinson and Lyon likely to be the first choices. Against our out of form/declining batting unit, they would be a handful. Among the batsmen , I expect Clarke, Warner and Hughes to score plenty of runs. Advantage Australia.
It would be starc rather than johsnon.

Even on Indian pitches, their fast bowlers are good enough to destroy our embarrassingly bad batting line-up. Tendulkar, Sehwag, Gambhir, Dhoni, Jadeja/Yuvraj/Raina will all be walking wickets once again. The Australian batting on paper is not as strong as England's but to be honest I can see most of their batsmen having fun against our trundlers and Ashwin. Should be a comfortable series win for the Aussies. But hey, at least we have the tamasha league after that - no way India can lose in that hey!

Jhonson bowled quite well on his last tour despite struggling for form. He looks to have got his rhythm back and given his experience of playing in these conditions and the relative inexperience in Aussie test squad, I would be surprised if Starc is preferred ahead of him.

Possible XI Warner > Sehwag Cowan > Gambhir Hughes = Pujara Watson > Tendulkar Clarke > Kohli Khawja/Smith = Rahane/Jadeja/Rohit Wade = Dhoni Johnson = Ashwin Pattinson/Starc > Ishant Siddle > Sreesanth/BK/Shami Lloyn < Ojha IMO On current form, India have only one player who is doing better than the Aussies. Tough series ahead for us.
They have very little experience in tests in India.

its inexperienced rather than weak. Ie its an unknown. Look at Joe Root for England. Did well on the debut. So could work both ways. Half the side has some experience of India via IPL or other international cricket. I think only Watson Johnson and Clarke have played test matches in India and Johnson might not play in the first 11.
