Updated Overall Record Dada - Played 49, W 21, L 13 Dhoni - Pl 45, W 22, L 12 Excluding BD and Zim Dada- P 38, W 12, L 12 Dhoni - P 44, W 21, L 12 Unless we slip up in the series, Dhoni should move ahead of Dada to become the most successful captain, this despite all the reverses in the last 18 months.

Great! Dhoni doing so with a weaker team as well and still has a better record.
Dhoni joined a team as captain which was on his way to become world no. 1. Players like Sachin, Zaheer, Laxman, Sehwag, Gambhir and Dravid(to a lesser extent) were self motivated and on top of their form. Presence or absence of Dhoni as captain was immaterial to that ride to no.1 position. Dhoni's role as captain started once that momentum gone and team started stuttering post WC'11. Dhoni's as role as captain came in play after WC '11 only. And since then his record has read: Played - 21, Won 7, Lost 10, Draw 4. Wins (3 against WI, 2 Against NZ, 1 each against Aus and Eng). If you are going to compare Dhoni captaincy with Ganguly captaincy, these are the stats which you should use.

Now thats ridiculous logic of you ask me. So his role will be only when team starts losing?

Am not a big fan of Dhoni the captain but that highlighted part is all BS Series loss in Aus, 1-0 down vs SA at home (Dhoni led the to a series equalling win at Kanpur), humiliated in SL by M&M, narrowly avoided a loss in the 1st home test vs Aus..as you say we were truly on our way to become number 1.

No, but when team's transition starts. Ponting won a lot, but in the end he is being considered as mediocre captain as he couldn't see Australia through the transition phase. Allan Border who made australian team almost from scratch in late 80's and early 90's would always be considered better captain than Ponting no matter who has better w/l ratio. Anyways, this is not even debate. The guy who presided over worst ever humiliation of Indian test team can not be a contender for captain, forget about being great captain.

Are you serious? That series is most successful series that India played in Australia. I rate that series even more successful than 2003-04 series which India had managed to draw. In 07-08 India played full strength Australin team and would have won without any doubt, if not for umpiring hara-kiri at Sydney.

The same guy also presided over the best phase when we were no 1. And the transition period you are talking about is right now. It has started when Dravid and Laxman retired and new players started coming in. It started from the NZ series I would say.

You can always pick boundaries to suit yoursef. No body can take away the fact that Dhoni suffered worst ever test defeats for indian team bar none.

End of the day it read 2-1 and thats how rating points are calculated. Also remember that we lost by an innings to SA at home (76 all out) when all of those who named were at their peak and then were humiliated by SL. Then came the home series vs SA, but for Ponting's brainfreeze of bowling part timers, would have lost that test as well. Dhoni led twice, we won both the games, Kumble led twice, we could not win. Probably under Dhoni the team was 'self motivated' but under Kumble , the same players were short on kaanfidence. You still think we were on our way to become number 1 side?

Indian drew both home series against SA with or without Dhoni. So where is difference? India won in England without Dhoni 1-0, close to 2-0. India lost to England 0-4 in England with Dhoni. That is the difference.

lol so answer the Q were India close to becoming no 1? Don't run away from it. BTW that 1-0 would not have been possible without Dhoni :--D

^India are yet to lose a test vs Aus at home under Dhoni, While we lost a series under Ganguly. That is the difference. Stop using child-like logics, Dhoni has been a good captain but the way our senior pros performed no other captain could've avoided those 8-0.
