Why do they keep picking Rahane in test squad?

Recommended Posts

If they dont rate him and dont want to pick him in team. Why the hell do they keep picking the poor fella in the squad!!! Is it some attempt at mental torture. He has been in squad for yonks on tours etc. Team bats have been sucking and he never plays. Even when they do need a batter, then then surpass and draft players in from outside sqaud to take his place. It might happen again in Delhi when suddenly CSK raina has been drafted in. If they dont rate him and dont want him in team and have no faith in him. Then why do they continually have him in test squad? Its actually cruel

While he has been made to sit on the bench' date='[b'] Ashwin, Umesh Yadav, Dhawan and B Kumar have made their debuts and already established themselves in the team.
May be cos none of these guys are middle order bats ? as for OP , you can only play 11 players ...5 batsmen ..excluding the 2 opening slots & Tendulkar, we are left with 2 spots ...surely you are not suggesting we should play him ahead of Pujara or Virat ? I like Rahane , but he cudnt buy a run in the ODI series he played ...hes lucky to be still in the sqaud tbh . Should give him confidence .

He has had several chances in ODIs and he has messed up each time. Finn pwned him in England with his pace and also on flat Indian tracks; he was again at sea against Mohammed Irfan and Junaid at home. I'm not surprised Dhoni has little faith in him. He should consider himself lucky he is allowed anywhere near the test team!

ODIs are different. A batsman's mindset and approach is different. In Tests, batsmen tend to play a lot tighter and closer to the body whereas in ODIs their instinct is to look to score, so they tend to play away from the body more and push harder at the ball. That's why in ODIs batsmen sometimes get thicker edges and drive on the up and have a bigger bat-pad gap. I think Suresh Raina and Yuvraj Singh are proof positive that ODI ability and Test ability have nothing to with each other. On the flip side, there are players like Michael Vaughan, Justin Langer and VVS Laxman who had poor-to-mediocre ODI careers but had long and fruitful Test careers. When are Indian fans going to learn that they are different formats and require different skills.

Guruji, appreciate the cricket 101 lesson, but from the little I understand about cricket, if you can't play a 145kph in swinger tailing into you in ODIs, you can't do so in tests, or for that matter in T20

Another cricket 101 lesson for you champ - playing a 145kmh delivery tailing in when you're looking to attack (not necessarily in shot but in mindset) is different to playing a 145kmh delivery when your trying to defend. When you're looking to defend, automatically you start playing tighter, closer to the body, letting more balls go, playing with softer hands until you've got your eye in when you can start to then push at the ball harder and play more expansive. In limited overs games because you only have 50 or 20 overs you don't have time to go through that initial phase and generally (unless you're Dhoni ) have to push from the the get go.

Thing is if one is hurried playing a quick bowler, it does not matter whether he is playing a test or ODI. He never looks assured against pace. Regarding the players you named, Vaughan is not nowhere a greatest of a test batsman, has a decent record, Laxman was decent ODI player too but there were other reason which kept him out of the team not because he could not play ODIs.

Rahane Problem has been his footwork. In england his footwork was impressive but he seems to get stuck and nto move forward enough .He will adjust to pace but he needs to get rid of the mental block of not going forward.Ganguly always says when he sees tendulkar going forward he knows he is in with a positive mindset.

Rahane never had a great footwork especially against pace. He is backfoot player and always stays back.

I think you skipped Logic 101. So there are 4 batsmen you name who were good in tests and crap in ODIs and you conclude "every batsman crap in ODIs must be good in tests, hence Rahane must be good in tests" :haha:

I didnot say every batsman who is crap in ODIs must be good in tests. What kind of dumbass conclusion is that? Do you work for the Indian media? Rahane's domestic 4 day average is almost 25 runs greater than his domestic one day average, so it's a fair assumption that he's better suited to tests than ODIs. Rahane faced 140kmh swinging deliveries in England in ODIs and T20s in 2011 and seemed to do fine, so it's clearly not an ongoing problem he has. He also played the emerging players tournament in Australia and faced Starc and Kyle Abbott (other 140kmh swing bowlers) and did fine too. Look at dhawan. He looked not only poor in ODIs but technically shabby. He played much tighter and closer to the body in his debut Test innings. Only Indian fans could take someone who averages 60+ in domestic 4 day cricket, pick them in the one day international format instead and then think that their performance in a few one day internationals counts more than years and years of runs in domestic cricket. This is the perfect logic for an Indian selector. Bunch of clowns ... We get what we deserve for dumbass logic like this. I look forward to another round of Steyn/Morkel/Philander vs. Raina in south Africa.
