alternatives to auction and salary caps

Salary cap is a must, however auction is BS. They can do an NBA style draft with teams getting slots based on previous year performance. Then they pick in order. So there will be no overbidding and insane amounts being paid to guys like Jadeja and M. Tiwary and Lady Jaya. Contract amounts can be stipulated based on draft order in which you got selected. Teams should be allowed to negotiate with their existing players and resign them to 2/3 year contracts, within the cap with slightly more incentive for a player to stay with his current team than go elsewhere. If a player goes unsigned cause his team doesn't want him or if he doesn't like the contract being offered or the team, he goes back to the draft along with other previously undrafted players. The order of selection would be by the team and not by list of players.

how would NBA draft work in IPL btw, lets just say all the players are put in to draft for the next season, and there are only 8 teams because Pune has left so how would the players be picked by each team. would they be a salary cap in a draft style auction or whatever it would be called. dont really know how NBS drafts works tbh

CSK would pick last, MI 2nd last, ... PWI 2nd, DD first. They could also adjust the sequence by randomizing the top 3 spots so teams don't tank games just to get the top draft spot next season. NBA does this by having a draft lottery (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NBA_Draft_Lottery). Let's say all players are in the draft, so the sequence may go like this. Round 1 #1 Dhoni (DD) #2 Raina (PWI) #3 KXIP (Gayle) #4 KKR (Yusuf Pathan :hahaha:) . #8 Hussey (CSK) Round 2 #9 Bravo (DD) . If you combine this with some player retention based on mutual contract agreement, then it works better so all teams will have a few core players resigned, and rest will go back to draft.

so even in round 2 and so on, DD would still get the first pick? would the player be put in categories like they are in IPL auction with a minimum base price which $400k for top players. when would they decide how much they will be paying them

I like the auction. Its a great equalizer and gives all franchizes equal opportunity to snag elite players. Else' date=' all the star players will 'take their talents to Marina Beach..' . :P[/quote'] It would be the same case in a draft too. The top players would get picked out first hence balancing out the teams even further. This also keeps the sh1tty ***** players for later rounds at lower salaries. Auctions are not as finely tuned as a draft. Draft has worked for many other leagues so I don't see why not IPL.

So if CSK picked last in the first round, they would pick first in the second. This essentially gives CSK two back to back picks. For example: 8 teams Round 1 Pick#. Team 1. DD 2. KKR 3. KXIP 4. RCB 5. SRH 6. RR 7. MI 8. CSK Round 2 9. CSK 10. MI 11. RR 12. SRH 13. RCB 14. KXIP 15. KKR 16. DD

Not a big fan of the draft since teams like DD can tank their season to get the number 1 spot in the draft leading to more fixing. Why not split the difference and let teams pick underused players from other teams in a draft. Faf on PWI would've made a difference IMO.

There are no minimum base price BS. A player either gets drafted or not. If he is drafted he gets paid based on the round/slot he was picked in. The reason I like draft instead of auction is that it keeps salary paid to a player to a relatively sane level instead of this overbidding frenzy.

You can't just tank cause most leagues will add extra clause to randomize the top picks between the poor teams. The NBA for example has the draft lottery where teams get odds in the reverse order of when they finished. So the out of the 32 teams, bottom 11 teams go to the lottery. The worst team gets the best odds of landing the top pick, however the exact spot is decided by a lottery. Given that the IPL has just 8 teams, they could do the same with the bottom 3 teams.
