JOHANNESBURG: At the top level, there is very little to separate between the teams. Man for man, there was not much to choose between the India and Pakistan teams and the difference between winning and losing depends on how one stays tactically ahead of the opposition. King of limited overs cricket, Sir Vivian Richards believes Pakistan paid the price in the ICC World Twenty20 Cup final by focussing too much on Yuvraj Singh. Richards said the Indian opener Gautam Gambhir smartly capitalised on the situation. Too much of Yuvi pak-a2509.jpgSir Vivian Richards“The whole pre-match attention was centred around Yuvraj and the way the Pakistanis were going to bowl to him. No one spoke about this kid Gambhir. When you look at how Yuvraj played, he was totally laidback today, he wasn’t as aggressive as he has been in the previous games and that worked well for India as no one catered for the little left-hander. The strategy worked very well in India’s favour. That was the crucial point in the match,†said Richards. “Gambhir displayed a cool head and timed the ball beautifully.†The 54-ball 75 will probably go down as Gambhir’s most important innings of his career. It was the cornerstone of the Indian innings. Still, not many would have given India much of a chance in the final of the ICC World Twenty20 when they managed a relatively modest total of 157, but Richards believed the game was on. Nerve factor pak-b2509.jpgMS Dhoni“A lot of people felt India did not get enough. But I always feel when you put a total on the board, it is runs scored, and the other team still has to get them. And in a final, there are other factors like the nerve one,†said Richards. India did well to defend their total of 157 to lift the inaugural Cup by five runs. Richards was impressed with Rohit Sharma’s batting as well. Sharma chipped in with a valuable, unbeaten 30. India started their defence poorly with Sreesanth getting clobbered by opener Imran Nazir. “It is what this game is all about, but Sreesanth has been one of India’s better bowlers in this tournament. In this format, no bowler can be safe from situations like this,†said Richards in defence of the Indian pacer. The two-time World Cup winner for the West Indies was mighty impressed with Dhoni’s captaincy in the tournament. “There’s a freshness in India’s look which is great to see. Let’s hope it can be maintained. Certainly, I do like what I see and there’s a lot of enthusiasm. There’s a lot of support for him and the team seems to be so relaxed around him, and that is great. “What I am very pleased about India is that they got knocked out of the World Cup (in the West Indies) early and now won here. All credit to the Indian team for the way they played. It was a magnificent match and worthy of a final.†http://www.mid-day.com/sports/international/2007/september/164554.htm
