DesiChap
Nagpur-based lawyer Manohar, hardline choice, will be anointed as president-elect Mumbai, September 26: While the Indian cricket team is basking in the glory of the Twenty20 World Cup, the BCCI is quietly readying the stage for a new president to take over from Sharad Pawar —- his close confidante and Nagpur-based lawyer Shashank Manohar. According to sources, the BCCI will stamp the seal on this succession plan tomorrow, and announce Manohar’s name formally at its Annual General Body meeting here on Friday. Manohar will move in as president-elect and finally take over from Pawar in 2008 when the Union Agriculture Minister moves to the ICC as its chief. In fact, Pawar is expected to be named ICC’s president-elect very soon while outgoing chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), David Morgan will take over as president next year. Manohar’s promotion will be a rarity of sorts in Indian cricket administration, as he will be the successor to the highest post in the office without any opposition next year. BCCI’s Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Prof Ratnakar Shetty said that “appointing the president-elect will help the newcomer understand the working of the president in a better way and will also reduce the percentage of politics that goes into elections for the post.†The BCCI had recently made an amendment in its constitution by which the two-year tenure of the board president can be extended by another year if the general body decides to do so by way of majority. And this means that Manohar, a powerful voice within the BCCI, is set for a long haul and may be in charge until the end of World Cup 2011 which will be jointly hosted by India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. According to sources, other BCCI officials in the running for the post, including vice-president Lalit Modi, have now thrown their weight behind Manohar. Manohar, currently president of Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA), is known to have a hard-line approach as cricket administrator. He had first hit the headlines as VCA chief when he laid out a greentop for a Test against Australia two years ago, which the visitors won easily. He was also the prime mover behind the proposal to introduce a performance-based payment structure for the Indian team. And most importantly, he was the mind behind Pawar’s election victory over former Board supremo Jagmohan Dalmiya in 2005. Link to comment

Ram
Somebody needs to regulate the BCCI. They seem to be an extra-judicial authority answerable to no-one. For an organization that handles thousands of crores of rupess , there must be some sort of external audit on them. And this BCCI president thingy is one big political circus. The head of the state boards will anyway vote for the main man , while the others are either coerced or bought. In return, you are assured plump posts within the BCCI that assure royal status for the next couple of years , free flights all over the world at the expense of the BCCI coffers. This is corruption at its biggest level. I wouldnt be surprised if crores of rupees change hands everytime a president is elected and that money can be easily earned back as bribes from sponsors who bid to advertise the Indian cricket team. God knows how much Sahara paid to win the sponsorship deal of the Indian cricket team. Link to comment
fineleg
We fans are addicted to cricket. This circus will continue unabated. If and when any or all of us have the strength to refuse to watch cricket, this tamasha has a potential of slowly being regulated (slowly). But that ofcourse will not happen, since we are suckers.
