shailesh
TOI CAPE TOWN, Jan 5: Virender Sehwag's third-ball dismissal in the second innings couldn't have come at a worse time for him. Probably not even a miracle can help retain his place in the squad for the next One-day series at home now. Indeed, Sehwag was within inches of being dropped from the final Test itself but Rahul Dravid's faith in him, and his match-winning ability, had saved the day for him. According to highly reliable sources, the chairman of the selection panel, Dilip Vengsarkar, wanted to drop him but eventually yielded only because of the captain's insistence. "The chairman was quite clear that Viru was in no shape to play the Test. He felt he was so out of form and low on confidence that he just couldn't be of much use to the team," said the source. "He was keen on bringing in Gautam Gambhir. But he was helpless in the face of the captain's fierce desire." A solution emerged on its own, though, when India discovered that MS Dhoni wasn't fit enough to play the Test. Dinesh Karthik entered into the picture and the think-tank, which was anyway impressed with his gutsy batting and spirit, decided he was the man for the moment. Otherwise, Dravid himself would have opened and Sehwag would have still batted in the middle order. "Vengsarkar had put his foot down on the eve of the match. He was clear in his mind that playing an out of form Viru was not the answer. But Rahul literally requested him to support him this one time. He believed that Viru could be a match-winner in such situations and wanted to give him one more chance." Vengsarkar agreed because he didn't want to be adamant before such a crucial match. Interestingly, Sehwag's inclusion meant that there was no place for a second spinner on the Cape Town turner. "Vengsarkar wanted to play Harbhajan Singh but the team management argued that he wasn't bowling well at all. They thought he wouldn't be effective here." The chairman was apparently quite upset with this particular line of argument. "If he wasn't bowling well, what was he doing here?" he is believed to have asked the captain and coach. The team then decided to make do with Sehwag's prowess as an off-spinner. Later, quite shockingly, it was revealed that Sehwag was in fact included as a second spinner. The team's hands were further tied as it had to play Munaf Patel at any cost here. Back home, the Board has been quite upset with the way his injury has been handled. It would have been scandalous if he was not included despite being "fit enough to play". That meant India went in with three seamers and one spinner short in this deciding game. Link to comment

yoda
Re: Plenty of dirt waiting to come out if we lose I think Dravid should resign. Are you serious? Yes. If he can't decide the playing XI without someone breathing down his throat, he should resign and focus on his batting. Let some west zone sucker work with these guys. Link to comment

beetle
Re: Plenty of dirt waiting to come out if we lose Vengsarkar wants to captain India...He should go back and look at the "no talent youngster in domestic games" rather than fiddle around the team... Stupid attention hungry control freak ....what is he doing there...doesn't he have the confidence in the 16 he selected? If he has selected them.....then he should shut up and let the captain decide the his 11.....in what capacity is he interfereing with the team....? He is just another power hungry selector . yoda
Re: Plenty of dirt waiting to come out if we lose To be fair, he is asking the right questions. But if I were Dravid, this is too much pressure to handle. Regarding Harby, he is saying, we all selected him cause he is good enough. Now on a spinner track, why the fack will you guys not play him? Did he suddenly become bad? If he was bad, why did "we" (as in all of us) pick him in the first place? Link to comment
beetle
Re: Plenty of dirt waiting to come out if we lose The final 11 belongs to the captain.....he has no business going there and creating a scene there... Is he the national chairman of selectors or a local bully.... If he doesn't agree with the captain....change him after the series....don't arm twist the captain on a difficult series .....
