Onus on batsmen to lift India in Durban

evl8.jpg

India are firmly, and rightly, resisting the temptation to have any knee-jerk reactions to the 141-run drubbing handed out to them in the first One-Day International of the three-match series against South Africa in Johannesburg. The manner in which things came together for the home team – South Africa made their highest score of the year followed by a simply irresistible effort from Dale Steyn – left India with nowhere to hide. India’s batsmen had plans, and as Virat Kohli was at pains to point out, none of them were running scared. Rohit Sharma, coming into the game on the back of an ODI double hundred and two Test hundreds, stuck to his game, but playing out a bowler when you’re chasing 359 is not a realistic option. Shikhar Dhawan got a steepler from Morne Morkel that simply cannot be replicated in the India nets as no one in the ranks has the height or the pace to do so. The middle-order, usually the engine room of any ODI batting line-up, is a slightly different story. Yuvraj Singh was out before he could get himself in and the pressure was on by the time Suresh Raina strode out to the crease. In the seven-match ODI series at home against Australia in October-November, India pushed Raina up to No. 4. The thinking behind that move was sound: should Yuvraj not be around to take that crucial spot in the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in 2015 through injury or loss of form, Raina would have experience under his belt should he be called upon to move up the order. However, the shuffle did not work for Yuvraj, who was making a comeback to the team, and India reverted to the old order for the three matches against the West Indies. While irate fans may be losing faith in Yuvraj in his latest comeback, the team management clearly believes he is too valuable a player to give up on so quickly. Now, however, both Yuvraj and Raina are having to make the mental adjustment needed to perform at their peak in their preferred positions. The good news is that India will not come up against Steyn and Morkel every day, and even when they do, it’s unlikely that the two can keep replicating their performances from Johannesburg.

hbnf.gifIndia don't have many quick fixes to their problems. Most of the repair work will have to be done by the same personnel. They could think of bringing in Ajinya Rahane ahead of possibly Yuvraj Singh. Their Test specialists have stayed back in Johannesburg so a slightly drastic step of including Cheteshwar Pujara to bring in solidity has been ruled out. With the ball they might want to bring in a quicker bowler after their first-choice bowlers were found short on pace and menace. Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma are their options. It will be interesting to see if they go for a fourth quick.

mrk.gifVernon Philander, who tripped a day before the first ODI and injured his shoulder, is fit and available for selection. That can't be good news for India. He would have loved the conditions at the Wanderers, and will here too. He should replace one out of Lonwabo Tsotsobe and Wayne Parnell in the XI. An injured Imran Tahir is 50-50 for the selection, but an educated guess after looking at the pitch says he will not be needed.

. . Pitch Overview-

173591.jpgLet Steyn summarise it for you: "I have looked at it from the balcony. Looks exactly like the outfield. I am not going to complain about that. I haven't been down so I don't what it looks like close up." Overhead, it has been mainly overcast. It rained quite a bit two days before the match, and there might be an odd drizzle overnight. An overcast Sunday with 20% chance of rain has been overcast, but you can't really predict weather in South Africa.

yadav in for mohit, rahane for yuvi ..ashwin is in poor form but since we have a pathetic replacement and considering ashwin's batting ability,i'll be reluctant to drop him , dhoni will sure shot play him..lets not fool ourselves though, ashwin will continue to bowl sh1t

MSD- "Death bowling - over the world bowlers are going for runs. With the extra fielder inside and the fast bowlers are not able to get reverse-swing. It is the new ball that is important. Conditions will help. Bowl in the right areas, let the batsmen play good shots. Don't give them a gift."

Yadav Shami Mohit Bhuvan Jadeja / Ashwin This is our best possible attack for this pitch, all bowlers should bowl their quotas. Yadav and Shami should open the bowling. Rahane in for Yuvi.

Looking at the pitch I think we are doomed. There is no way we would win tomorrow. And I am not being pessimistic. Now the question is how can we reduce our losing margin? a) Pray that Philander does not replace Tsotsobe. He seems to be the only weak link in their bowling attack and if Philander plays then the attack will be even more dangerous. b) Replace Mohit with Umesh, Ashwin with Ishant & Yuvraj with Rahane. c) Let Rahane open the batting as he is technically better for these conditions. Replace Rohit at no. 4

Dhoni is stubborn so don't expect much we might have Umesh in place of Mohit that's it, but we need to make more changes then that , also Shami, Umesh should open and hope Dhoni doesn't make it an ego issue and try to prove he was right in not picking up Umesh in the first place and not support him, we can carry max one spinner and ideally none but that wont happen, Lineup should be Dhawan Rohit Virat Rahane Raina Dhoni Ashwin shows he is a genuine bat in all conditions as well so to me an all rounder Shami Umesh Bhuvi Ishant at this point atleast if he can bowl 140's and straight give him a go or play Rahane

We lost the ODI because of our bowling and ur team only has 4, also Ashwin to me is a better batsmen compared to Yuvi against this attack in SA, ALSO SINCE HIS COMEBACK HE LOOKS WEAK AGAINST BOTH PACE AND SPIN, earlier he was good against seamers and took time to get to grip with playing spinners when he came in.

I am waiting for a good game ' date=' win or loose I will support and have faith in these players, and still say we have the best batting line up in the world, also have the pace and skills to give it back as far as bowlers[/quote'] + First tour for these bunch of young guys and it couldn't get any tougher. I will back the players until the NZ tour is done and dusted.
