Vidarbha make great turnaround NAGPUR: What a turnaround this has been! Vidarbha had a terrible last edition in the Central Zone Vijay Hazare One-day Trophy where they finished at the bottom of the table. They somehow survived the relegation in the Ranji Trophy this season and were clearly underdogs in the tournament. In the end, the underdogs turned out to be the champions. The young legs proved their worth in the shorter format as Vidarbha won the Central Zone championship for the third time. With two other teams—Uttar Pradesh and Railways—also tied at 10 points each and having superior net run-rate, Vidarbha needed to win their last league match against Uttar Pradesh. They did it in style. Vidarbha made light work of Uttar Pradesh's 268-6, chasing down the target in 46.1 overs with six wickets intact. Young Jitesh Sharma led charge with a sparkling 107 (11b, 13x4, 2x6) in company of experienced Faiz Fazal (84, 95b, 9x4, 2x6) with their 183-run opening stand, a Vidarbha record for any wicket in the One-dayers. Faiz was also part of the previous record when he and Owamir Afzal had a 150-run second wicket stand against MP in 2006-07. With three wins out of four matches, Vidarbha collected 14 points and remained unbeaten in the competition. Their second tie against Railways was washed out. Vidarbha last won the championship in 2010-11 at Kanpur, while they did it for the first time in 2007-08. On both occasion, they went out to make the semifinals of all India competition. They would now hope to be third time lucky when the knock-outs start on March 11 in Kolkata. It was a complete team effort with Faiz continuing his golden form this season. After a superb run in Ranji Trophy, the southpaw carried the Vidarbha batting and emerged the highest run-getter in the tournament. Faiz scored 186 runs in the tournament at an excellent average of 93 scoring a hundred and a fifty. It was his match-winning hundred, along with five-wicket haul by Umesh Yadav, against Rajasthan that set the tone for Vidarbha. Yadav's presence boosted the bowling line-up. He led the charge bagging 8 wickets @ 15.45. Allrounders Ravi Jangid (100 runs @ 50; economy rate of 4.16), Gaurav Upadhyaya (6 wickets @ 22.33) and middle order batsman Urvesh Patel played their parts to perfection. However, it was young Sharma and pacer Swapnil Bandiwar who justified their selections and grabbed the opportunities with both hands. Batting down the order skipper Shalabh Shrivastava didn't have too many opportunities but he led the side well again. Vidarbha won the tight contest against Madhya Pradesh where fielding was the difference between two sides. Vidarbha took some outstanding catches and effected some crucial run-outs in the tournament.

Jharkhand, Bengal reach quarterfinals Jharkhand and Bengal claimed the remaining spots in the Vijay Hazare Trophy quarterfinals after finishing as the top two sides from the East Zone qualifiers in Ranchi on Friday (March 7). Manoj Tiwary brought his vast experience to the fore to help Bengal pip Assam by 12 runs in a high-scoring game at the JSCA Oval. Tiwary, easing himself back into competitive cricket after recovering from a knee injury, top scored with 90 in Bengal’s 321 for 6 in 50 overs. Tiwary’s 144-run stand for the third wicket with Shreevats Goswami, who made 87, allowed Bengal to launch an onslaught at the death. And Wriddhiman Saha rounded things off, smashing six sixes and one four in his 56-ball 78. Assam, finalists in 2012-13, fought valiantly courtesy Sibsankar Roy, who stroked an unbeaten 101, but were outclassed just as the finishing line was within touching distance. Veer Pratap Singh took three wickets as Assam were bowled out for 309 in the last over. Elsewhere, table-toppers Jharkhand rounded off their final game with an emphatic six-wicket win over Odisha at the JSCA Stadium. Rahul Shukla, the medium pacer, did the damage upfront. His three wickets, including the vital one of Biplab Samantray for a first-ball duck, left Odisha reeling at 18 for 4. Anurag Sarangi and Govind Podder made 80 each to restore parity, their 145-run stand allowing Odisha an opportunity to put up a competitive total, but Shahbaz Nadeem’s twin strikes dented them towards the death. Nadeem, a crafty left-arm spinner, took 2 for 42 as Odisha were restricted to 216 for 8. Ishank Jaggi, who made 125 off just 116 balls, piloted Jharkhand’s chase as they crossed the line with more than four overs to spare. Ishan Kishan made 44, while Saurabh Tiwary finished the job with an unbeaten 30. Baroda take on Railways in the first pre-quarterfinal at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on March 10, while Services and Vidarbha square off in the second pre-quarterfinal at the Jadavpur University Grounds. The winners join Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Punjab, Gujarat and Jharkhand in the quarterfinals. Brief Scores At JSCA Oval Ground: Bengal 321/6 in 50 overs (Shreevats Goswami 87, Manoj Tiwary 90, Wriddhiman Saha 78 n.o.; J Syed Mohammad 2-59) beat Assam 309 in 49.3 overs (Parvez Aziz 67, Sibsankar Roy 101 n.o.; Veer Pratap Singh 3-65, Saurasish Lahiri 2-49) by 12 runs. Full scorecard. At JSCA International Stadium Complex: Odisha 216/8 in 50 overs (Anurag Sarangi 80, Govind Podder 80; Rahul Shukla 3-49, Shahbaz Nadeem 2-42) lost to Jharkhand 220/4 (Ishank Jaggi 125, Ishan Kishan 44; Basant Mohanty 2-32) by six wickets.
