Narendra Modi Tells BJP General Secretaries to Focus on Party and Government Co-ordination

In his first big meeting at his official residence at 7 RCR, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with the general secretaries of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Buoyed by its recent success in the national elections, Mr Modi, sources say, stressed on the need to continue strengthening the party and ensure good co-ordination between the party and the government so the two complement each other. The focus on the organisation is important, sources say, as BJP gets ready for elections in Maharashtra and Haryana that will go to the polls in a few months from now. The state of Jammu and Kashmir and Jharkhand will see elections next year. The party has performed very well in these two states in the general elections and would like to keep the momentum going. At least three general secretaries - Ananth Kumar, Dharmendra Pradhan and Thawarchand Gehlot - are now part of the Modi cabinet. Party president Rajnath Singh is the Home Minister and discussions continue on his successor where two general secretaries Amit Shah and J P Nadda's names are said to be under consideration. Later in the evening, the PM held an almost two-hour-long meeting with Mr Singh, Arun Jaitley and Nitin Gadkari. It's going to be a working Sunday for Mr Modi as he will interact with the staff at the BJP headquarters in the evening and thank them for their efforts and contribution in the elections.

Haryana Janhit Congress warns BJP on seat-sharing formula

CHANDIGARH: Despite BJP leaders' eagerness to claim chief ministership in Haryana, its alliance partner Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC) is unrelenting on its stand to take the top post. Asking BJP to clear its position on seat-sharing by June 15, HJC has announced that it would go strictly by the compromise formula of 45 seats each for contesting the assembly elections that are due in October. Of late, BJP leaders have been indicating to offer 20 or less seats to HJC to contest for the 90-member Haryana assembly. HJC supremo Kuldeep Bishnoi has also sought time to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issue. Senior leaders of Haryana BJP, like Anil Vij, have been stating that they had been making chief ministers of other parties and they wanted to see a member the saffron party at the top post. Meanwhile, Bishnoi's wife and party's senior vice-president Renuka Bishnoi said on Wednesday that the people of Haryana wanted to see her husband as the CM. "Every section of the society now stands behind Bishnoi and people will hand over the power to HJC this time," she added. Echoing similar sentiments, Bishnoi's elder brother and former deputy chief minister Chander Mohan reminded the BJP leaders that before the Lok Sabha polls, even Modi had announced to contest assembly election under the leadership of him (Bishnoi). BJP's main objection to the 45 seats each formula is due to the fact that HJC lost both the Lok Sabha seats in the recent polls while the saffron party won seven of the eight seats it contested as per the agreement. However, HJC has now started taking credit for the victory of BJP candidates in the parliamentary elections. "Before the Lok Sabha polls, Bishnoi had toured villages and towns of the state for two months during his Haryana Vijay Abhiyan. Without any doubt, the alliance succeeded to win seven seats because it contested the poll under the leadership of Kuldeep and people wanted to see Modi as the Prime Minister," said Chander Mohan. HJC leaders also said that it had not broken the alliance when BJP candidate from Ratia assembly segment had lost his security deposit while HJC had won the Adampur assembly seat and Hisar Lok Sabha during the byelections in 2011. "BJP candidate could maintain lead only from the native village of Bishnoi's mother in Ratia constituency," said a senior HJC leader requesting anonymity. He also said that BJP, even being a national party, had won just four assembly seats while the regional party HJC had won six seats in the state in the 2009 polls. CHANDER MOHAN TARGETS HARYANA BJP CHIEF Leaders of HJC and BJP have intensified war of words over the seat sharing formula among them. Days after BJP MLA Anil Vij gave a statement "Koi langde ghode par dao nahi lagata" (no one bets on a lame horse), HJC leader Chander Mohan attacked the Haryana BJP president Ram Bilas Sharma on Wednesday. "Sharma has forgotten that he had lost his security deposit by polling just 23,000 votes when he contested against Kuldeep Bishnoi from Bhiwani during the 2004 Lok Sabha polls," he said. Bishnoi had won the poll battle by defeating INLD's Ajay Chautala, son of then CM Om Prakash Chautala, and former CM Bansi Lal's son Surender Singh.

Jaswant Singh may get Tamil Nadu governor post

Former external affairs minister Jaswant Singh is likely to return to the BJP, which is considering making him the next governor of Tamil Nadu. Singh was expelled from the BJP when he jumped into the poll fray as an independent candidate from Barmer in Rajasthan. He lost by a margin of 87,461 votes. “His return is being negotiated, despite objections from a section of party leaders in Rajasthan,” a senior cabinet minister told HT. Former UP chief minister Kalyan Singh is tipped to get a prized posting. This is also because his son Rajveer Singh, MP from Etah, could not make it to the council of ministers. Former HRD Minister Murli Manohar Joshi, who did not get a ministerial berth, is being considered for the post of Maharashtra’s governor. Former leader of opposition in the Delhi Assembly, Vijay Kumar Malhotra, is also being considered for the job. Party sources claim Joshi is yet to take a call on this offer. Current governor, Sankaranarayanan took over in January 2010, so he will retire next year. “Modalities are being worked out to accommodate BJP veterans in the Raj Bhavan,” a senior BJP leader said. Following the 2010 SC judgment, some leaders in the BJP fear it would not be easy to accommodate a large number of ‘aspirants’. A five-member constitution bench had then said the power to remove a governor cannot be exercised in an arbitrary, capricious or unreasonable manner and it will have to be exercised in rare and exceptional circumstances for valid and compelling reasons. While a governor has a term of five years, TN governor K Rosaiah has over two years left.

The Vasundhara Raje-led government in Rajasthan has taken the lead in bringing about dramatic changes to Central labour laws, which reformists have long argued are holding back job creation in the country. Labour laws form part of the Concurrent List and the Union government has often claimed pre-eminence in allowing amendments proposed by states to the legislations framed by the Centre.
The Raje Cabinet on Thursday cleared state-level amendments to three critical and archaic Central government labour legislations — the Industrial Disputes Act, Contract Labour Act and the Factories Act — seeking to liberate the corporate sector from the shackles of stringent requirements of the laws. The related Bills will be introduced in the Assembly early next month and then referred to the President for his assent.
When contacted, Raje said, “I had promised 15 lakh jobs and this is one area which desperately needs to be opened up. I don’t have a choice
