Shipping professional booked for anti-Modi Facebook post

Devu Chodankar, a young shipping professional from Goa, has been booked for a Facebook post criticising Prime Minister-elect Narendra Modi. Chodankar had written on a Facebook forum that if Modi came to power, Christians would lose their identity in south Goa. An FIR was filed against Chodankar and a local court rejected his anticipatory bail plea. The police said that Chodankar had been served the summons and that his custodial interrogation was necessary to "figure out his intentions". The police claimed they also needed his custodial interrogation to get hold of posts that may have been deleted. Mumbai: Shipping professional booked for anti-Modi Facebook post Devu Chodankar had reportedly written on a Facebook forum that if Narendra Modi came to power, Christians would lose their identity. In the FIR, the complainant, allegedly an industrialist and BJP supporter, stated that Chodankar wrote there could be a holocaust if Modi came to power but later, he deleted the post. Chodankar has been booked under Sections 153(A), 295(A) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Section 125 of the People's Representation Act and 66(A) of the Information Technology Act. Chodankar's lawyer called it a suppression of the freedom of expression. "This is nothing but saffronisation of the Goa Police," he said.

Nothing new. BJP and allies earlier have got people arrested of Facebook posts earlier as well. Remember 2 young girls from Palghat had case filed against them for facebook posts by BJP's close ally ShivSena just about an year ago.

Again did govt file the case
A case against him was filed by one Atul Pai Kane, chairman of the Kane Group of companies. Kane, who regularly defends the BJP and Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on the social media, in his complaint said Chodandkar had threatened Facebook users against voting for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Lok Sabha polls. The FIR was lodged under Sections 153(A), 295(A) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 125 of the People's Representation Act and 66-A of the Information Technology Act. Some of the sections are non-bailable in nature.
