Speed and performance of pacers and spinners in important matches

Not just Shami but i do that also for Umesh and that is only for cricketing reasons.  These two are no greenhorns anymore and they deserve all the criticism for not improving as well as they should have.  If we keep being soft on our pacers, they will never take that next step of becoming world class fast bowlers.

Umesh : Yes

Shami: He is still very good. He will be discarded soon but for his fitness and his focus on debauchery rather than cricket.

Michael Clarke said in the post match show today that Bumrah was in the high 140s today with  a fastest of 153 kph.

Watched the entire first 2 hours of match. Didnt happen to see that 153k delievery ( atleast not on the speed gun ). But Bumrah throughout was bowling quick. Couldnt help but wonder if Waqar or Donald used to bowl any quicker than this consistently. For that they would be bowling at 150 then!

Anyway, interested to know about Umesh's standing in the speed deptt viz a viz other international bowlers. Do you know his ranking?

They did not tweet about Umesh's ranking this year as he is not playing.

I will let you know if I can find it somewhere.

What I like about Bumrah is that he is a thinking bowler who learns and tries to improve. Came back very strongly today.

There is no doubt that Bumrah is a genius. I mean he is a once in 2 generations bowler! The fact that he is the greatest Indian pace bowler is an understatement. He is better than all indian pace bowlers combined!

However I get sleepless nights thinking what if this is his purple patch and how long will he/his shoulder last? Can he be as effective as McGrath at the late stages of his career without being 140+? From his short height will he be able to generate bounce without that shoulder operating at 200%? Will he even be able to sustain this kind of performance over 200 test wickets? Forget 300/400 for now.

Shami isnt good overseas and is just average.  I had posted his overseas stats.  His average was close to 40 in England in those conditions where every fast bowler averaged in 20s.  Exclude the SA tour 2017-18, he averages 41 in SENA, include that SA tour, then average goes down to 36.  my issue is not his record but lack of any visible improvement in consistency.   On his day, he looks world class but those days are not frequent enough.

Commentators saying that Bumrah has been the 4th quickest bowler in the world this year in terms of all deliveries bowled.

Starc and  Gabriel must be the top 2.

I wonder who the 3rd guy is  ?

... And who would have thunk that not 1,but all in all 4 Indian fast bowlers would be in the list of the top fastest 12 of the world!

Thanks!

...  And 3 Indians among the top 6 or 7 quickest test pacers of the World and only 1 Pakistani.

Shall has sucked this test. Thankfully the other three bowlers picked his slack so far otherwise it would be same as south Africa and England series where because of one bad bowler we couldnt finish things off and let the opposition get away

Shami  picks up Travis Head in his first over today.

It was a good channel ball which moved away a bit and bounced a bit.

Very next ball ...  similar ball but a bit wider ... and out again.

2 wickets in one over.

Australia all out for 235.

Shami picked up most important wicket of Travis head this morning. He is inconsistent but he has some very good and crucial spells randomly. Bhuvi will be trash here without any doubt. Umesh is even more erratic than Shami.

yes shami is still better than BK and Umesh in these conditions.  unfortunate thing is not trying new bowlers. Umesh gets picked based on his home exploits

153 kmph is incredible. I think srinath had a disputed speed of 96 mph in some game, but many of the other indian pacers have typically had peaks of 150-152, although speed guns do vary a great deal.

Not disputed for Srinath.  Has bowled both 157 k and 156 k in 1996-97.

Fastest balls by Indians till now in international cricket.

Srinath    157.0 k

Bumrah   153.3 k

Umesh     152.x k

Aaron       152.x k

Ishant      152.x k

Shami      151.0 k

Nehra      149.7 k

Kohli is a very defensive captain.  This " spread slips "  theory has another " victim ".  Why not have a normal slip cordon with 300 runs to work with  !

That edge off  Shami would have been an easy catch to a normal 2nd slip.

Really good channel ball by Shami to induce an edge.

Shami bowling with a lot of intensity today.

Consistently 138 k to 144 k in good areas with a lot of zip off the deck.

A short of a length ball rises sharply and hits Khawaja on the ribs.

Bumrah hits Khawaja with a 140 k ball.

Next ball a jaffa ... a channel delivery at 143 k that seamed away.

Next ball ...  in the same area at 144 k ... but comes in.

Nice stuff  !

That's why khaja went behind Ashwin n lost his wicket
