Speeds and Performances of Pacers and Spinners

Recommended Posts

I was going through the bowling speeds of our bowlers on BCCI.tv for test matches we played in 2016 and 2017

In the 14 tests Umesh Yadav played against WI, NZ, Eng, Bang and Aus ..... he had fastest speeds of 149 k to 145 k in almost every test innings .... mostly 148 k , 147 k or 146 k.   Very good speeds for test matches over such a long period.

He had average speeds of 142 k to 138 k .... mostly 141 k, 140 k or 139 k.

In the SL test series, he had fastest speeds of 143 k in 4 of the 6 innings, average speeds of 136 k to 140 k mostly ..... and bowled his normal pace only in the first innings of the first test when he touched 147 k.

This clearly shows that he is tired and overworked.  Apart from the 17 tests in 1 year, he has played the IPL and lots of ODIs.

Those really fast balls are needed for Umesh's style of bowling, to pick wickets.  Like we saw the 145 k inswinger in the first test. Just hovering around the 140 k mark means less wickets for him as accuracy is not his forte.

He needs to be rested for most ODI series if we want a fit Umesh bowling 138 k to 148 k  . It was the correct decision to drop him for the SL ODIs and he should not be played in the Aus and NZ ODIs either.

p.s -  Shami has consistently bowled really high speeds in all the 13 tests he has played in 2016 and 2017  ( fastest of 147 k to 144 k  in almost all test innings with a fastest of 151 k  )  and has always done well in this period.  He has used the faster deliveries with great effect to take wickets.

but Shami had a lot of rest in between.

That was the exact point of my post.

The need to give sufficient rest to our fast bowlers if we want them to bowl with intensity in every match.

A fit fast bowler must not be over-worked just because he is not injury-prone.

exactly what is being done with Umesh. For that they can utilize Ishant who never gets injured.

We need one good left-arm pacer, says Bharat Arun

Variation in any bowling attack makes it lethal and thats precisely the reason why bowling coach Bharath Arun is in search of a potent left-arm speedster, who enables Indian team to have all bases covered.

Since Zaheer Khans departure, India have not found another capable left-arm pacer. The skillful Ashish Nehra despite his injuries have done commendably in shortest format for some time while Jaydev Unadkat lacked pace.

Barinder Sran was a skiddy bowler, who faded away rather quickly and Aniket Chaudhary is still not a finished product. In his second stint, Arun expects better communication with A team chief coach Rahul Dravid and bowling coach Paras Mhambrey.

How about grooming Kulwant Khejroliya for the future  ?

Has genuine pace ...... has taken 17 wickets from 7  List A matches .... could be a genuine wicket taker.

amazing looking at it. We all are guilty of calling t20 everything, in a test game someone like steve would not have so much as remembered this delivery, he would have just dropped his hands and seen it sail through harmlessly to the keeper and Thambi would have gotten back and told him self to correct his line. But here its ourside off but not too much and steve steps to the side and tries to pull it and score runs and gets hit. t20 in bowler friendly conditions will not be hit and giggle.

The 3rd and 4th deliveries of the first video showcases the pet-delivery of Md.Siraj.... fast, at the stumps, seaming in.  .   It has got him lots of FC wickets.  Last ball at 142 k.  He clocked 145 k quite a few times in the IPL.

Next, a quick toe-crushing yorker from Siraj

Kamlesh Nagarkoti in his debut List A season early this year

This guy is really quick

Nagarkoti bowling against England U19 .... raw pace

Except one delivery which was a bit short and wide, most deliveries were good deliveries and not like batsmen threw their wickets.

Yes .... Nagarkoti's  line and length is good too and he forces batsmen to make mistakes.

Skiddy raw pace, decent accuracy, seam movement, excellent surprise bouncers .... and, most importantly, ability to run through sides.   Add to that his batting ability.

Looking forward to him playing for India seniors.

hopefully, he could also add a few more inches to his height if he is actually 17.

Nagarkoti, 17   and Avesh,  20,   can form a great opening pair for India in the near future.

Both have the ability to run through sides and take wickets

One is short, skiddy with raw pace   and the other is tall and bouncy who makes the batsmen jump

Perfect foil for each other

Kuldeep, 22  and Rahul Chahar, 18,  a nice spin duo .... both can turn the ball, get bounce  and be effective outside the subcontinent too.
