Gavaskar saying , " With the finger spinners getting so much turn, just imagine what a wrist spinner ( Rashid ) might do  !

So, just like the rest of the world, we too realize that a good wrist spinner can get more turn than finger spinners on an average.

Question is ....why have we, as a country,  not tried to develop / promote classical wrist spinners after Subhash Gupte ?

Both Kumble and Chandrasekhar  were non-classical wrist spinners.

We need to look beyond Mishra now..... need to develop / promote Kuldeep, Quadri, Chahal, Gopal

Before Mishra and Chawla....Hirwani was there..but way to inconsistent......Sairaj Bahatule was another one who had a brief go

But no-one got a long rope or real good support in the lat 50 years.

We have not tried to find / develop wrist-spinners the way we have tried regarding pacers.  There are no big spin academies in our country.

I was happy to see Umesh Yadav bowl  sufficient bouncers and short, rising deliveries yesterday, after a long time.

A short, rising ball hit the handle of  Jennings'  bat and lobbed up to gully...but a tough chance was dropped.

Later on, when he was trying out bouncers to Moeen....the batter did not come forward to a pitched up ball as he was anticipating another bouncer....and edged it wide of 2nd slip and another difficult chance was dropped.

This is what judicious use of  bouncers do......they improve the potency of pacers and make the batsmen circumspect about coming forward decisively.

Yes, it's true. Wrist spinners have been extremely rare in the country. Vaman Kumar was arguably as good as Chandra but never got the chances he deserved. Amongst current crop Kuldeep and Quadri should be front-runners, Chahal had an excellent season but I don't know if he will sustain it, and Gopal has become more of a batting allrounder.

Ishant Sharma did not look in full flow today. He was running in slower, often floating the ball in and his pace was down...bowling 130 k to 141 k.   He is not 100% yet after being down with chikunguniya a couple of months ago.   He was very accurate though and  economical as a result. Picked up a wicket.

Umesh  Yadav was not as accurate today as he has usually been in the last couple of series. He bowled a lot of very ordinary deliveries and did not create enough pressure on the batsmen. Bowled speeds between 137 k to 148 k but could not use his pace well.

The pitch and conditions had little for fast bowlers too.  Very slow with very little swing, reverse swing or seam movement. Lost all bounce after the first hour.

5th  test vs England

Speed ranges of most  deliveries ( excluding slower balls )

Umesh  137 k to 148 k

Ishant  130 k to 141 k

Umesh bowled realty well on the 2nd day....after an ordinary first day.  This pitch is very slow and without any consistent lateral movement either, but he showed a lot of heart and worked up good pace that was needed to negate the slowness of the pitch.  Moeen Ali's  dismissal was very exciting to watch. One bouncer hit him on the shoulder, the next one hit him on the arm as he tries to fend it off and the next one had him pulling awkwardly to lob a catch to mid-wicket. This short-ball strategy should have been tried yesterday also.   He bowled some good bouncers and yorkers to Broad and Rashid too and dismissed Rashid with a channel delivery.  good to see him getting 2 wickets after toiling hard without much reward this whole series.

Ishant a bowled an excellent spell in the first session on day 2. Bowled some good bouncers and hit Dawson on the helmet with one. He was accurate and  got some seam movement on a dead pitch too.     Picked up 2 wickets.  But, it seems that he has not fully recovered from chikunguniya and has been down on pace this test match.

The quicks could have been bowled a bit more in the first innings as the spinners were not getting much assistance on day 2.

ishant looked accurate but a lil slow.

he will become faster.

Umesh  Yadav bowled quite well in the 2nd innings. He was accurate, bowled very quickly at 138 k to 148 k and was visually hurrying batsmen all the time.

We are seeing from the last test that Umesh has improved his bouncer a lot. Now, most of them are well directed and high...not the waist high deliveries that he used to bowl earlier. He bowled some hostile deliveries in this test, hit the English batsmen on the body and gave them chin music regularly.  One such bouncer to Moeen had him hooking the ball up in the air and was almost caught in the deep and Moeen was almost hit wicket as he fell down in an attempt to hook awkwardly. This strategy was necessary as the pitch offered no lateral movement.

He picked up the crucial wicket of Rashid.

Ishant bowled well too and did his job. He was economical and picked up a wicket. Bowled some good bouncers but is obviously not fully fit.

umesh hit moen at least 4 times with bouncers and then kind of forced him to throw his wicket by lobbying up a dolly catch which I guess karan took.

this indicates umesh is getting good control over his bouncers...which is a very good sign

Nathu has been quite accurate most of the times I have seen him bowl.  Tries to bowl to a plan.

Another issue is.... a rookie fast bowler aged 21  generally improves his accuracy.

He was clocking  up to 143 k in domestic matches where everyone clocks slower speeds....looks very fast visually.

nathu has to be fast tracked in to international cricket as I feel he has capability to improve if he plays with umesh ishant bhuvi shammi and the indian coach

Nathu Singh is the best new pace talent we have as of today.  He can make progress by leaps and bounds if he can work under Kumble. he needs to be included in our ODI and T20 teams  ASAP.

The next A tour is  8 or 9 months away.

The Ranji season will be over when we play England in LOIs

Rather sitting idly, it will be better if Nathu Singh can work under Kumble, learn from him and bowl to our top batsmen in the nets.  Even if he is not actually played in a match,  he will develop quicker this way.

Hardik Pandya bowled like a top test match bowler today although he was bowling in a one day match..  I think he is ready for test matches as a bowler.

The first thing noticeable was his accuracy. In his first spell, he bowled 5 to 6 balls on the same spot....good length, around off-stump and the batsmen just could not get him away even when more experienced seamers went for lots of runs.  He has developed a  good stock delivery now and that is half the battle won.

The next thing is his natural ability to hit the deck hard and get some extra bounce and seam movement. It was consistently on show today. He seamed the ball both ways and got many deliveries to kick up from length and just short of it.  In combination with accuracy, this is very difficult to handle and ideal for test match bowling.

He got some outswing with the new ball too and in combination with his seaming deliveries....it was a pleasure to see him move the ball both ways with such consistency.

He bowled quick in his 2nd and 3rd spells. Bowled some vicious bouncers and hit Billings on the head with one.

He bowled some slower deliveries too and the only thing that was lacking is yorkers in the end overs. he needs to work on this aspect if he wants to be a good LOI bowler.  But, the improvement he has shown as a bowler....I think we are going to see this sooner rather than later.

Really great news on Pandya and reprt from express bowling.  So happy he is back from injury and be ready to play

He is must in all format squads and I would play him in all formats.  Shame no overseas tests as ideal use for him.  Home tests is he better then Yadav?  Probably not thus tricvky call

But maybe worth investing in him and play him.  As away from home could have 2 genuine all rounders .  One spin all rounder in ashwin and other seam all rounder in Pandya.

But to play in home tests his bowing has to be top notch and up their with yadav as otherwise me make same mistake as engkand packing team with bowlers who supposedly can bat but cant do it with ball like moeen ali

But over all great he is fit and back

It is good to know Pandya outperformed senior bowlers Nehra & Mohit after coming from injury layoff.

@express bowling: pl analyse Kuldeep 's bowling today inspite of him taking a 5fer & some catch dropped of him

Kuldeep bowled a very good sequence of well thought out deliveries almost every over to set up the batsmen and dismiss them.  He combined  his chinamen and straighter ones very well with his googlies. Pitched most deliveries just outside the off-stump and the batsmen were often fooled by which ones will come is and which ones will go out. As Mosher pointed out, he has excellent control over his googlies.

He put a lot of over-spin on the ball too and got good zip and bounce often. This troubled the batsmen. Many deliveries dipped on the batsmen and they were often not sure where the ball will pitch.  A couple of dismissals were the result of that.

The only improvement I would like is him using the side-spin more consistently. Perhaps it was some dew in the evening that was preventing him from doing so.  We saw him get good side-spin during the day-time in the Duleep trophy.
