He was still an automatic selection for test matches in India like Rohit Sharma. It was the away test matches as well as the captaincy tht was the problem. Playing only home test matches could have worked i guess.

Dont think so. He will continue in ODIs for a while because he enjoys that format a lot more.

Dont think he enjoys cricket anymore. So many responsibilities have taken a toll on him. He looks 45 year old than a 33 year old.
