In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "Make in India" campaign, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has finally given green signal to the two much awaited big-ticket FDI proposals for setting up diesel and electric locomotive plants in Bihar at a cost of Rs 2,400 crore.
While four global firms -- Alstom, Siemens, GE and Bombardier -- have been shortlisted for the proposed electric locomotive factory at Madhepura, two multinationals -- GE and EMD - are vying to bag the diesel locomotive plant at Marhora. The estimated cost of the factories is about Rs 1,200 crore each. The financial bidding will be opened on August 31 and there will be two pre-bid meetings held in between, the official said.
he Madhepura plant will manufacture 800 electric locomotives of 12,000 horse power (HP) over 11 years. While five electric locomotives will be imported, 795 will be manufactured at Madhepura, as per the bidding condition. Marhora plant will produce 4500 HP and 6,000 HP diesel locomotives using state-of-the-art technology. In the course of about 10 years after commissioning, the proposed Marhora plant is expected to manufacture about 1,000 diesel-electric locomotives.
Railways will have 26 per cent equity while the global players will have 74 per cent equity in each of the plants at Madhepura and Marhora.
The proposals for the diesel and electric locomotive factory in Bihar were announced in 2008 by the then Railway Minister Lalu Prasad.
This will generate at least thousands of job and advanced locomotives. Also this is another example of how UPA announces projects and then just ignores.

In a shocking incident, Madhya Pradesh Finance Minister Jayant Malaiya and his wife, Sudha Malaiya, were robbed of their valuables by an armed gang while they were travelling to Delhi by the Jabalpur-Nizammudin Express early on Thursday morning. According to Mrs. Mallaya, five persons armed with daggers gained entry into their first class AC coupe after knocking on the door around 4 a.m. when the train was speeding away near Mathura. The desperados made away with a gold chain, a ring and some cash. Narrating her harrowing experience, she said, ``We boarded the train at Damoh. There was a knock at the door of our coupe at about 4 a.m. and when I opened the door, a person carrying dagger entered forcefully followed by four others. ``Then they snatched my purse, chain and ring. At least 34 passengers of the Dehradun-Varanasi Janata Express were killed and around 150 injured when four coaches derailed near Bachrawan station in Rae Bareli district on Friday. The toll could increase as around 60 seriously injured passengers have been admitted to hospitals in Lucknow and Rae Bareli. “The toll has mounted to 34. While 30 persons died in Rae Bareli, four were declared brought dead in Lucknow,” U.P. Minister Manoj Kumar Pandey said. “There could be more deaths,” said Lucknow Divisional Commissioner Mahesh Gupta. One of the coaches that derailed was a jam-packed general compartment, railway sources said. They said brake failure could have led to the derailment around 9.30 a.m. on the Lucknow-Rae Bareli-Pratapgarh section — which is around 50 km from Lucknow — that left two coaches severely mangled.

NEW DELHI: Indian Railways is bringing on board popular fast food chains Pizza Hut and KFC to deliver pre-ordered meals to passengers, providing an interesting interlude to commuters inured to delays on the world's largest rail network. IRCTC, which handles online ticketing, catering and tourism for railways, has approved Pizza Hut and KFC's applications for ecatering.
"To begin with, the service will start in trains that do not have a pantry car. Subsequently, it will be extended to trains with pantry cars like Rajdhani and Duronto," IRCTC chairman and MD AK Manocha told ET. More locations are being identified for delivery of food from Pizza Hut and KFC, he added. The problem of having such a system on long-distance trains with pantry cars is that the price of a meal is included in the passenger fare, says Manocha.

NEW DELHI: Indian Railways is on track to take the e-auction route for the first time for redevelopment of stations through public-private partnership (PPP). The cash-strapped operator is working on a policy for e-auctioning contracts for about 100 railway stations in a bid to overcome the bureaucratic hurdles faced by private companies while undertaking PPP projects, a top railway board official said. The official, who did not wish to be named, said private players will be able to submit their bids online, after which a technical committee will study and approve the bids. He added that private players tasked with converting the railway stations into world-class transit facilities will be given a specified area within the station premises and around it to be exploited commercially. "The space given to companies for commercial development will be such that they get decent returns. Joint ventures will be formed at the divisional level for the project," the official said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently told the Indian diaspora in an interaction in France that he had invited French companies to explore commercial opportunities in Indian Railways. India hopes foreign players including companies from Japan will be interested in investing in the station redevelopment project. "We have proposed a very transparent and swift procedure, which is a giant leap from whatever we have tried earlier in the PPP space," the official said. The ers ..
