The police said the group snapped his holy thread and shouted " Periyar Vaazhga (long live Periyar)". - Later, the same group attacked another elderly Brahmin and ripped off his holy thread in T. Nagar, a few kilometres away, the police said. - A third elderly man and a 12-year old boy were attacked at Triplicane today while on way to a temple. - K. Veeramani had organized an April 14 event in which volunteers of his outfit removed their wives' mangalsutras, dubbing them "symbols of women's slavery". The programme was advanced to the early hours to beat the high court's ruling later that day. The court eventually stayed the programme, preventing a larger gathering and possible trouble. Two days later, Veeramani was embarrassed when pictures of him solemnizing a rationalist wedding a few years ago by handing over a mangalsutra to the groom were circulated in the social media. K Veeramani jDY1weu.jpg - Attacks on Brahmins were frequent when the DMK first came to power in 1967 and the anti-Brahmin campaign was at its peak with Periyar persuading the government to pass a law recognising rationalist weddings solemnised without priests, mantras or and mangalsutras. This is probably the first time that such attacks are happening when the AIADMK, led by Jayalalithaa, a Brahmin, is in power. I know that Dravidian parties were dead against Brahmins a few decades back and during Periyar's time the community was under constant attack in TN. They were constantly ridiculed, systematically forced out of government jobs, their land was stolen and many were forced to migrate to other states/abroad for lack of opportunities in TN. I think reservations in TN is much much above national average and it is very difficult for TamBrahms to get seats in educational institutes, government jobs etc. Now even their safety is compromised . What is about these goons attacking defenseless old men, children just because they happen to have sacred thread or go to temples? Is there a revivalism in anti Brahmin sentiment in the state because of reversal in fortunes for DMK? Is AIADMK any better than DMK in this regard(whose head Jayalalitha herself is a Brahmin)? Why has no political outfit except BJP condemned these actions? What is the current ground situation for Tamil Brahmins in the state, are they politically, economically marginalized? Do they have any political clout at all? Discussions and some info from TamBrahms on ICF would be welcome. I greatly respect Tamil Brahmins for their intelligence(must be Indian Jews as far as prowess in maths, science, chess etc is concerned :hatsoff:) and great contribution to India, sad to see them going through such tough times.

Veeramani called for that mangalsutra removal event a few days back(according to the 2 articles). Both DVK and DK are followers of the same ideology, both follow Periyar's teachings, investigators are trying to find a link between these 2(from the articles).

Stop being so delusional. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Brahminism#Tamil_Nadu http://indiafacts.co.in/nothing-celebrate-periyar/ According to your beloved leader, the late Periyar Brahmins are worse than snakes and ought to be killed. Karunanidhi himself is deadly against Brahmins. Why are Brahmins not able to find seats in educational institutes/have to flee outside the state because of no job opportunities in their home state? The story of TamBrahms is similar to Kashmiri Pandits minus the killings.

I had a friend from Tamil Nadu. He is a so called Brahmin. His father once went to a job interview, knowing that he is a Brahmin the interviewer rather than asking relevant questions asked the no of steps in the stair while coming to the interview room.

How does that make DK responsible for any fringe element doing .I am not defending or do I care about them (they arent even a political party) but ur logic is absord. So we should make BJP responsible for anything done by any fringe hindutva elent in India. So attacking Pudiya Thalaimuari channel was done by BJP based on ur logic ? And our innocent hindutva elements where the one incited the violence. Hindutva elements were bombs on television channels for expressing opinion on TV and DK condemning it by having a peaceful ceremony. And u are crying about how DK is the violent one .

who gives a **** about the DMK anymore. with a 63 year old "youth leader" its only a matter of time they become irrelevant. I personally dont buy this Brahmin hatred though. So there are 6-7 incidents in a state of 70 million and people start panicking. The CM is a Brahmin. It may have been an issue say 30-40 years ago. But I dont think its the case now. You have people like N Srinivasan who is a Brahmin running chennai cements. Clearly many leaders of inudstry in TN are Brahmins. They more than take care of the employment prospects of their community in TN.

Periyar was never against Brahmins but against Brahminism and its oppression of other communities.Just check how good a relationship he maintained with Rajaji prominent leader of Brahmins U are talking about an era where 90 % governace were under Brahmins and non-Brahmins were not even considered for it. Heck Rajaji govt wanted to impose Gurukula education system into every one in TN. Yes some of his speeches were very regrettable not just on Brahmins. He also asked to throw every God statue in Temple into sea if they dont allow other castes into temples. It was in an era of oppression were he has speaking for oppressed communities.U have see through that prism as well. And he usualy indulged in verbal attacks on them not violance From the same link u provided
According to a British survey in 1912, though Brahmins represented only 3.2 percent of the male population of Tamil Nadu, they held 83.3 percent of the sub-judgeships (immediately under British personnel), 55 percent of the deputy collectorships and 72.6 percent of the district administrative posts.
Just see TNCA even today and u will know how much discrimination it is still done in TN .Every single cricketer from TN represented India is a Brahmin in last 30 years and u are talking about discriminating against Brahmins lol. Ofcourse we revere him and will continue to do so.Not every on Tamil Nadu agrees with his views becoz his views tended to be on extreme on most issues.Even Anna was often against his views on most issues and formed DMK .But he is the one who reformed out society. We are only state in India who dont have caste names as surnames .Tell us why u people are for caste equality and still want to be identfied in public sphere by caste names. We were the first to recognize inter caste marriages. He lead the self reform movement for women and lower caste even before independence. And for comparing Tamil Brahmins as some outcast and comparing with Kashmiri Brahmins u are just delusional. Brahmins usually migrate to other states for mainly education purpose becoz there is 69% reservation quata so its really hard to get into the real top universities
