Bahubali : India's Biggest Motion Picture

Recommended Posts

I had made a thread on this a few months back but unable to find it now. Mods can merge this post into the thread it if they can find it. Bahubali is a Telugu film by director Rajamouli ( of Eega - Makkhi fame ). It is shot in Telugu and Tamil simultaneously with Hindi dubbed version being presented by Karan Johar. This is the costliest film ever so far in Indian film Industry and stars Telugu Stars Prabhas and Rana Daggubati. There were lot of leaked promos, etc earlier but here is the official teaser ( or teaser of a trailor  ). This is supposed to be a 2-part movie AFAIK AeOydbt9e6g

Btw why isnt Anushka part of the trailer but Tamanna?
:dontknow: Marketing team sure would have done its homework on how much that particular star is already exposed, who they want to be surprise factor,etc...Maybe Anushka is not there in Part 1 - no idea. Both Tamanna and Anushka have done a lot of work in Telugu movies recently... Check on Tamil trailor if available - maybe they might have tweaked a bit there based on exposure of heroines to local audience, their recent Tamil movies, etc.

You are asking me as if I am involved in the movie :--D...I am just a fan like you...:two_thumbs_up: I have met Venkatesh a few times and his nephew Rana Daggubati also ( he was having lunch in the same star hotel that my company was kind enough to sponsor us employees) ...beyond that, I rely on same internet as you... My guess is - there should not be too much delay between part 1 and 2 - max six months... There was this Bollywood movie on Vijayawada rowdies with Vivek Oberoi by Ram Gopal Verma that had parts 1 and 2 - Surya was also there...Rakta Charitra - Parts 1 and 2 were released within months IIRC... Man - Most violent faction movies are from Telugu Land :nervous:

I've been eagerly waiting for this movie for the past couple of years. This is going to be the 10th movie directed by S. S. Rajamouli and i'm sure he won't disappoint. All of his 9 movies so far have been successful and i expect his streak to remain intact. With the limited reach that Telugu movies have,it has to be said that investing 200+ crores for this movie was a brave decision. But,if there is one director in Telugu film industry who can pull it off,it is S. S Rajamouli.

True - 200+ crores as COST is HUGE. Is it for part 1 or both parts 1 and 2? The highest grossing Telugu film so far ( Attarintiki Daaredi ) made only 183 crores but I think 200+ crores will become more common going forward even for Telugu movies. On this one, they might be expecting 200 crores from Telugu version and maybe 30-50 odd crores each from Tamil and Hindi versions. They might also do some games on characters for some change money.

While we wait for the movie - for the people that are unaware of Rajamouli and why the posters are in awe of him...I will post a few scenes/songs of his movies. He is MASTER of GRANDEUR. 1) Chhatrapati movie - Agniskalana scene - Background Sanskrit song ( tune copied from German cartoon song :embarassed: ) - Same hero Prabhas as in Bahubali GOLdlQe20GA 2) Yamadonga - Epic scene between Lord Yama and a human ( 2 more movies in Telugu had same theme that were copied to hindi too - one with Jitendra and other is Takdeerwala I think ) r2nGhPzjZGA 3) Magadheera - Muslim invader and hero fight with 100 soldiers - EPIC M3FDT5gIAMM Will post more later - Language ( Telugu ) might be an issue but what is more important is the Grand Settings, awesome background music and experience...

200+ crores for both parts. Attarintiki daaredi collected 183 crores "Gross" but the share was around 85 crores."Share" is what the producers of the film get into their own pockets. So,even if we split the cost i.e 100 crores per one part,Bahubali still needs to break the existing telugu records in order to break even. But,the film has created so much hype that it's destined to bring in profits.

Kalia the crow, why dont you wait until July 1st week to start your hype? The movie is like about 40 days away still... - Chamataka the fox
Dear Chamataka the fox, There is no hype that I am creating - Even movie makers themselves released trailer 40 days earlier and it is all over YT with millions of views.. I am now worried about you :(( Is Doob Doob not taking care of you  - Kalia the crow

If the are spending 200+ crores (including advertising and promotions expenses), the filmmakers are probably expecting to generate 300+ crores revenues from various sources - regional market, national market, international market, music rights, TV rights, etc.

The film itself is made on a budget of 175 crore, atleast 75 +crore will be spend on promotion, so this could either be the biggest blockbuster in india outshining pk or could be biggest dud outshining Aag,though the hype around this is huge and vfx etc are exceptionally good, heard prabhas bought gym equipments worth whopping 1.5 crores through shipment, to get all bulky for this movie and took advice from wwe superstars regarding their diet and workout, he increased his weight from 85 to 110 kg all muscles no fat, same with rana.

200 crore :yikes: Trailer is decent, But I have this feeling the translators will make a mess of the dialogues while dubbing. The quality of the dubbling, the voices, the dialogues will make or break this movie in Hindi... Might do well in Tamil n Telugu

Enthiran was done on similar budget and similar market space I.e Tamil and Hindi .They raked in massive profits so if it is good it will definitely make good profits Also NaanE is carved a niche market for Rajamouli in Tamil .So they will get massive opening in Tamil as well

200 Crores :WTF: that is budget of a decent Hollywood movie This better be good or at least have some decent graphics. The best graphics in indian movie ever was that space ship in that horrible pk movie :banghead: and that should tell us the amateur level graphics in Indian movies.....don't have high expectations

From what I see, it's too filmy . Lacks the poignancy of sweeping classics like Mother India,Lagaan or even Maya Bazaar
All rajamouli movies are like that. They are basically a sambar. They have a mix of emotion, comedy , fights , sentiment and love story.

Many idiots talk trash about movies but they have no clue about the commercial aspect of it. Mainstream movies are made that way because that's what many people pay to see and that's how filmmakers make a profit and the people in the film industry get paid and make a living. Its easy to say make another "Mother India" or "Lagaan". If everyone starts making those type of movies, a small elite audience(who download it through torrent and watch it btw) might be happy but the industry will close down within a year.

Nobody is doubting whether the film will be a commercial success. It most probably would be. But would it be a masterpiece? Would it have the feel of an opus like Lawrence of Arabia,Titanic,Benhur,Mother India or Lagaan? Probably not (judging from the trailer).. There are movies which are meant to amaze and then are ones that do. MI and Lagaan made a lot of money and were not limited to the elites.

In entertainment industry esp. in Ind, quality and budget may not be directly proportional .... You can pay someone like Salman Khan 100 crores for a film which may guarantee a smash opening or even a mega hit but the film could be forgettable or quickly go out of mind in 2 months Anyone remembers Kick or Don 2 or Happy New Year or that Hritik Roshan film (can't even recall the name) based on Day and Knight

PS with 200+ crores already spent on the two films - if the first one fails to hit the mark, it would be disaster as the 2nd one could become a non-starter .... On the other hand, if the first one hits the mark, the 2nd one (if the first one does not go past 200+) should be able to make the overall venture profitable with a good opening

Well...its understandable that a 200 crore Indian film will be commercial but the trailer (not the 20 second teaser) is poorly made. Some of the shots are really good but overall the trailer video is simply poor execution. Are Rana Dugabatti and Prabhas big stars to command crazy opening in Telugu? I am not too sure whether this is going to even get back its money. Are they expecting main money to come from Telugu and a bit from Tamil/Hindi? Not sure about the numbers. Atleast if it had stars who have an all India reach, I would have felt differently. This movie needs to be good quality wise too (as in engaging not necessarily realistic) to get the multiplex audience watching it.

The Rajamouli reputation and expections alone will carry through it even if the movie turns out average .

Some info from web on rights for movie acquired by distributors...The cost is pegged at 160-200 crores as per varying reports - AP,Telangana (Nizam area is the term in filmi circles) and Karnataka sold for 79 crores ( looks like it is for part 1 only as per reports. Not clear ). - Reports that Karan Johar paid a "whopping" amount for Hindi - No figure available though - we can only speculate - TN rights for Tamil - acquired by Studio Green - for a "fancy amount" - Audio rights/launch for Telugu was 2+ crores - we can expect total 5 crores for all languages - Satellite rights : Number of 25 crore is circulated for both parts - Telugu only ( Gemini, Maa and Zee Telugu in race ). Add few more for other language satellite rights. - Kerala, USA,UK,UAE,Japan Australia expected to fetch 70 odd crores http://www.tollymovies.com/news/newsDetails/3461-Rajamouli-Bahubali-Distribution-Rights-Fetched-Rs-79-Crores/ http://www.ibtimes.co.in/filmmaker-karan-johar-acquires-rights-rana-daggubatis-baahubali-whopping-amount-631032 http://www.ibtimes.co.in/studio-green-acquires-ss-rajamoulis-baahubali-tn-rights-621187 -------------------------------- The makers ( Producers) will surely recover the money and more. The risk is now with the distributors. @SIF On Rana and Prabhas - They are second rung Telugu heroes i.e below the first line of Mahesh Babu,Pawan Kalyan and Jr.NTR ( leaving oldies like Venkatesh, Nagarjuna and Chiru aside ) but they have their own followers ( more so Prabhas as Rana is a newcomer ). From the story, it needed tall and muscular heroes and both Rana and Prabhas fit well as they are both around 6'2 or so. Also - in Telugu - audience give lot of importance to director too ( same I guess in Tamil ). Hero is not the only factor.

your analysis is a bit off.. for big budget movies, they primarily need good movies and then superstars, not the other way round. They had Rajinikath - the no.1 superstar in South India in Lingaa. but the movie is rotten. result - distributors lost 70% of the money. same for Kochadayaan. "I" is another half rotten movie from Shankar this time. But the movie touched breakeven point. people seem to trust directors more than superstars. rajamouli has equal fan-following to the no.1 hero in telugu (like shankar in TN). he has a good name in TN, kerala and Karnataka. basically entire south India is covered. Karan Johar will put some effort marketing the movie in the north. the biggest disadvantage to this movie is not the lack of cast as everyone is talking about here if the hindi dubbing is bad then even a dog(real dog, not insulting anyone here) will not watch the movie in the hindi belt. The movie will more than break even just with south collections. hindi collections and overseas collections will decide the hit range. lets bump this thread after the movie releases and see if the movie struggles to breakeven as you predicted.

First of all, star quotient is important. Endhiran was hardly a quality movie but it was a super duper hit because 1. It was engaging 2. It had Rajni Hindi big budget movies are pure crap but they produce the numbers due to star quotient. For Tamil and local languages, big budget movies need to have stars and some basic engaging content. Linga flopped not because it wasn't a good movie. Linga flopped cos its story was sooo bad that even Rajni couldn't salvage it. As for this movie being able to recover its costs (from distributor point of view as producers always make money selling the rights), it depends on the current numbers Telugu blockbusters do (which would give us an idea about the market size), how engaging this movie is, etc. I agree the producers would have done the calculations but its a huge hurdle.

Linga was a big hit reached break even easily(within the first week) and that was only becoz of Ranji http://boxofficemoney.in/how-much-lingaa-earned-at-box-office-till-now-linga-4th-week-income-earning/ The problem was the distributees bought the movie for over the top prices .So they suffered some loses .

Thanks bro. Yeah in South India, directors matter too. If the makers are investing 200 crores, they surely would have done the calculations (from a distributors point of view) cos their reputation for future movie releases matter. So there must be some rationale behind investing 200 crores for this. Any idea what revenues did Telugu blockbusters make in recent times?

180+ crores for Attariniki Daaredi couple of yrs back. There are a few others in the 150-180 crore bracket. The figures include dubbed versions and worldwide revenues ( just like Enthiran had huge money from Telugu and Hindi versions too ).
