Honestly he doesnt deserve it. You need to be known as one of the best actors in the world to get a shot at winning the Bharat Ratna because its the highest award given to a civilian. There are so many others who deserve it over actors or anyone from film industry.

Whether actors deserve Bharat Ratna can be debatable .... But there is no doubt that Dilip Kumar is the actor in his own league. He is the school of acting and an inspiration for many super stars and actors including Manoj Kumar, Amitabh Bachhan, SRK, etc. devdas-dilip-kumar.jpg “ Kaun Kambakht bardaasht karne ko peeta hai…” Because of his acting, Dilip Kumar was offered roles in Hollywood movies as well including the Omar Sheriff role in Lawrence of Arabia (that role made Omar Sheriff famous). However, being the leading actor in India, he only accepted the main roles .... People such as Satyajit Ray have defined Dilip Kumar as "the ultimate actor"

Bharat Ratna is given more for influence in your field rather than just talent IMO. And if we talk about influential actors in Hindi cinema then he is probably at the top and has inspired many' date=' many big stars.[/quote'] +1

When Dilip Kumar played a villager, you would actually think he is from the village; and when he played a prince, you would be forgiven to think that Dilip Kumar is a real prince .... Whether it is comedy, tragedy or whatever, he is amazing For e.g. In Ram aur Shyam, he would actually make you feel bad for Ram. And when Shyam replaces Ram, you would cheer for him for taking on the villian .... Such is his power of acting! nu2szmpzMVE ^ the 5 mins of this clip is enough to see his range (and learn) :hatsoff: It is said that after doing too many tragedy films, he was feeling sad in real life so producers started making fun films for him .... Ram aur Shyam was probably is last major super duper hit as the "young" character lead actor, then he transformed himself in to playing older character/lead roles in films such as Kranti, Vidhata, Mashaal, Shakti, Karma, Saudagaar, etc.

The scope of 99.9 % of Indian cinema itself is such that you cant take it as more than light entertainment or popcorn fare because vast majority of audiences who watch these movies dont like to think too much and are not particularly educated. So Bollywood caters to their taste by putting some stupid songs, dances, fights in the middle of some formulaic story with cardboard characters. None of the actors or directors will be regarded as artists to be given a Bharat Ratna. There are some rare exceptions like Satyajit Ray but that's about it.

And therefore we are discussing the Bharat Ratna and not Jagat Ratna :P

I always found him overrated. Acted in only one style and couldn't really fit in and play diverse roles. There were several "style" actors in those days like Dev Anand and Raj Kapoor. Somehow, Dilip Kumar came to be recognized as the best. I didn't find anything standout in him. Amitabh Bacchan is 10 times a better actor than Dilip Kumar.

Such comparisons would never end as someone could say AB only played the angry young man's role brilliantly (the Deewar character), SRK is better. Than someone will say what - SRK can act? I only thought he tried to play himself. Aamir Khan is 10x better and so on :haha: .... Personal opinions aside, Dilip Kumar is widely recognized as an institution Watch Shakti and enjoy watching both of them! :drinks:
