The Malwani police, several of whose officers were suspended for allowing a spurious liquor racket to flourish in their jurisdiction, which led to the deaths of more than 100 people in the hooch tragedy last month, seem to have declared war on an easy target: sex. - consenting adults who had checked into various hotels in the Madh Island and Aksa area to get some privacy were shocked to find the police knocking on the doors of their rooms on Thursday. More than 40 couples were rounded up and taken to the police station, where they were insulted and some of them, especially college students, were made to call their parents.

Mumbai :Cops round up couples from inside Hotel rooms " Consenting adults who checked into several hotels in Madh Island and Aksa area were shocked to find policemen knocking on the doors of their rooms on Thursday."

The couples were taken to the nearby police station, where they said they were insulted while some were even made to call their parents, the tabloid Mid-Day reported on Saturday. The report said although the couples were inside hotel rooms, they were charged with “indecent behaviour in public†and fined Rs 1,200 before being let off nearly five hours later. A 21-year-old woman was quoted by the Mid-Day as saying she was slapped by a female constable when she questioned the harsh action and refused to pay any fine. Another young man was quoted as saying: “The police first insulted all of us in front of all the officers and the other couples and then forced us to call our parents and insulted and disgraced us in front of them. They also made the parents feel guilty as if their children had committed some heinous crime.â€

Mumbai: The Malwani police, several of whose officers were suspended for allowing a spurious liquor racket to flourish in their jurisdiction, which led to the deaths of more than 100 people in the hooch tragedy last month, seem to have declared war on an easy target: sex. Suicidal "I am literally contemplating ending my life because of the trauma and the stigma from the raid. I haven't been able to step out of the house and my parents have also not spoken a single word to me since this morning," a 19-year-old girl told mid-day yesterday. Another 21-year-old woman was slapped by a female police constable when she refused to pay the fine. "I am not a prostitute. I am an adult who was out with my fiancee , who I am supposed to marry next month, to find some privacy. I had entered my name in the hotel register with my identity proof and also handed over the relevant documents when asked by the cops. But, when I tried to tell a female constable all of this, she slapped me," said the girl.
LINK A Girl asks : " Do we have freedom as citizens of India? " You have the freedom to remain silent and do as we please .
Do we have freedom as citizens of India? How can you fine and demean us and intrude into our privacy. If you want to take legal action, fine the hotels or lodges if any of them allow immoral activities like prostitution to go on in their premises. Making love to the person of my choice in a private room doesn't amount to indecent behaviour in public. You can't just harass us because a DCP orders a raid," she added.
It is completely normal in this democracy to be detained and harrassed by The Police for having consensual sex inside Hotel rooms. This would be abnormal only in a state of "Anarchy".

From the article

Traumatised by the incident incident, a 19-year-old girl told mid-day that she is contemplating committing suicide because of the stigma and because her parents aren’t talking to her anymore. Another 21-year-old girl, who had gone to a hotel with her fiancé, whom she is supposed to marry next month, says she was slapped by a female constable for daring to protest against the action.

That area is fast becoming a red light district. They were rounded up because the police thought there were drugs and prostitution involved.... This article does not convey the entire picture. A whole bulk of hotels in that area are illegal. Calling their parents was just a means to check if they were really who they claimed to be.

this has nothing to do with the Sena. Its a fight between the local five star hotels who want to keep the area upmarket and the illegal hotels which have sprung up. Also, the home ministry in the state which controls the police is under PM Fadvanis. (assuming the police were involved for moral reasons) Why do i get a feeling you randomly plug the Sena into everything mumbai related?

These hotels were illegal. Thats why they were raided. Typical presstitute media. That entire island has two five star hotels which are legal. The rest are illegal. There were many married couples in these hotels as well and even they were taken in. Only difference is they did not have to phone home to their parents. Phoning home was to check if there were really whom they claim to be. This has nothing to do with any political party.

Nothing to do with Shiv Sena, just police reaction after some of their officer got suspended. They had to vent it somewhere.

Its not a question of venting their anger. That area was becoming a free for all. Prostitution, illegal bookmaking, gambling drugs. The hooch tragedy just brought in under the scanner of the home ministry. In addition the five star hotels complained. Action needed to be taken. There was a mass arrest on the island a few weeks back as well. It was in the local media. It was for distribution of cocaine.

Seems like a classic case of selective media reporting. If it's indeed true that the area has illegal hotels, prostitution, drugs etc the couples being picked up makes sense. Of course, real couples who needed privacy would have been pissed but in all fairness if the area has such a bad reputation, they should be staying away from it.

Whatever the case, couples should not have been targetted this way and nothing can justify that. If anything, these hotels should be directed not to allow couples, responsibility is solely theirs. What police did here is an attack on citizen's privacy, which cannot be tolerated under any scenario.

G_B_ has said that a bulk of hotels in that area are illegal.Do you really think illegal hotels would follow stipulations and not allow couples and thereby losing on revenue? In certain areas known for prostitution, drugs etc it can be very tough for the police to differentiate between real couples and others.Nothing can be done in such a scenario. You either need to neglect everyone and allow prostitution or you need to deal harshly and thereby causing trouble to real couples. The only possible solution is in the hands of couples. If an area has such a bad reputation then steer away from it.

Then they need to shut the hotels off. Those who don't comply should be put in jail. But to humiliate couples and calling their parents is such pathteic thing to do. These are adults, not children. Secondly, in a country like India, where honor killings are still a reality, how can the police department be so retarded? Couples are not at fault here. If there are hotels, people will use them. They had nothing to do with this. Fault lies with people running these hotels and the police department.

Dude no couple was arrested they were taken back to the police station and made to call home just to be clear they were not those enraged in that activity. If you google search that area, its like really not developed. So its like a wild west very close to the city. The vision document of mumbai wants to turn that area into a high end resort which generates some 10,000 jobs for mumbaikars. There were plans for a casino but they were shot down. Clearly those kids must have known if the hotel is illgal of not. If a hotel offers you a room for less than half of what other proper hotels do then there must be something to it right? This story originally broke in the mid day newspaper. That is a tabloid even by TOI standards. Its also not fair to the natives of that area there large swathes of youth come to the island looking for illegal cheap booze and sex. Its not just this area mind you. You also have Sanjay Gandhi national park. There are a lot of illegal hotels which have come up within the national park which are used by pimps. Many times couple who come to have sex are offered cheap rates and then video taped and then blackmailed. These kids should be reasonable. If you venture there you can fall pray to a whole host of things.
