Then they need to shut the hotels off. Those who don't comply should be put in jail. But to humiliate couples and calling their parents is such pathteic thing to do. These are adults, not children. Secondly, in a country like India, where honor killings are still a reality, how can the police department be so retarded? Couples are not at fault here. If there are hotels, people will use them. They had nothing to do with this. Fault lies with people running these hotels and the police department.
I understand where you are coming from.I'm all for couples being able to do whatever they want in hotels.Of course,if the illegal hotels are shut down and proper steps are taken by legal hotels, the involvement of the police can be reduced. But,this is India. You really think it's easy to shut off the illegal hotels? It's highly possible that a lot of these illegal hotels pay off the right people and have some political backing to keep them running without being shut down. Of course, couples are not at fault here. But,if a certain place is known to be involved in prostitution, drugs etc why take the risk and visit such a place?

mumbai-map.jpg IF you want to know what area it is, its magh chowpatty. (chowpatty is the marathi term i believe for opening to the sea/beach) near malad west on the western side. There are beaches and islands there and the place is sparely populated. (by mumbai standards)

Dude no couple was arrested they were taken back to the police station and made to call home just to be clear they were not those enraged in that activity. If you google search that area, its like really not developed. So its like a wild west very close to the city. The vision document of mumbai wants to turn that area into a high end resort which generates some 10,000 jobs for mumbaikars. There were plans for a casino but they were shot down. Clearly those kids must have known if the hotel is illgal of not. If a hotel offers you a room for less than half of what other proper hotels do then there must be something to it right? This story originally broke in the mid day newspaper. That is a tabloid even by TOI standards. Its also not fair to the natives of that area there large swathes of youth come to the island looking for illegal cheap booze and sex. Its not just this area mind you. You also have Sanjay Gandhi national park. There are a lot of illegal hotels which have come up within the national park which are used by pimps. Many times couple who come to have sex are offered cheap rates and then video taped and then blackmailed. These kids should be reasonable. If you venture there you can fall pray to a whole host of things.
These are adults, not kids. Secondly, kids must somehow know which hotels are illegal..really? Shouldn't police department be the one having knowledge of such hotels? Why are these hotels open for business in the first place? Last.. alright, it wasn't an arrest. But still, police humilated them and was stupid enough to call their parents? In this country, many parents abandon their girls for pre-marital sex. There are cases of honor killings. The girl is labelled a **** for the rest of her life and a female from the article even contemplated suicide. Wasn't there a better way to verify their identity? How can this even be justified. For me, this was a case where poor couples paid for police department's failures.

Police could have verified their identity in a better way without humiliating them or calling their parents. This is Indian society and peoples life can be destroyed by such actions. Why humiliate? Why call parents? There is obviously a hint of moral policing in the story.

Definitely there are 2 wrongs here. If that is true that few if not all couples have rented rooms for few hours to do business then that's not the place where desperate couples should be. If decent couples start to do this then hotels which do legal business loose it because of such illegal activities. Having said all of this, Police need to develop some social sensitivity and handle things carefully. Police is very gawar in our country in this matter.

Do you live in India? If the answer is Yes,then you must know the answer for the bolded part. All your questions are valid and it's indeed a bad blow for the girls involved in this incident though they aren't at fault here. And yes the situation wouldn't have happened if the Police had done their duty in the first place i.e shutting down illegal hotels. But,the police department does have a bad name when it comes to doing what they are supposed to do.

These are adults' date=' not kids. Secondly, kids must somehow know which hotels are illegal..really? [/quote'] So if you are the police. You have thousands of other cases to probe all around the area. How do you separate the normal people from those engaged in illegal activity. They have knowledge and shut them down. But they cannot be there 24/7 to monitor if the order to shut them down has been observed right? Many of these hotels operate despite there being a sign there saying shut down by police order. The owners of the illegal hotels file a case in court for retrospective legality using the same laws which made slums legal. So their hotels cannot be demolished. If the police dont raid the same owners in a few years will claim they have been in place for 50 years and some media person will paint them as a sob story. Again, in this country the police have limited resources. You know prostitution exists in this area. Many time prostitutes themselves carry drugs on them to satisfy the needs of their clients. What is the most time efficient way those who are not guilty can be separated from those who are guilty of breaking the law? The police in Mumbai have limited resources. This is not first world force. The police in question has already been stretched hard because they are having to patrol the coast for gold smugglers and terrorists (similar to kasab). ITs all very easy to paint the police as being bad. I have no shame in admitting if i was a constable i would take a bribe. Because the pay I get legally is not enough for the job I am supposed to do.

Look ultimately this area needed a shake down. The 5 stars hotels in the area needed the authorities to clamp down on these mushrooming illegal hotels. These kids unfortunately are victims of that. But they should have been wise enough to know that place was in the headlines for all the wrong reasons from illegal hooch to prostitution. Looking at the ages of those involved its clear they did not have much money in their pocket and they decided to go for the cheapest option.

The reports say that these couples were charged with public indecency. If they were taken in just for verification as you are claiming then why were charges placed on them?

These Hotels were dens of prostitution , drugs and Immorality which threatened the Sovereignty and integrity of the Nation , friendly relations with foreign States and Public order. The hardworking , incorruptible and under-pressure Mumbai Cops had no choice but to take stern action against the perpetrators . If some innocent couples were caught in the encounter , it is understandable and excusable. Collateral damage is always inevitable in such cases. But One question remains , Why were the couples "fined Rs 1,200 before being let off" ?

They are using shame to police sexuality, We will call your mom to verify if you are a prostitute, why do you object if you aren't one? What are you doing on the beaches, it is where prostitutes and pimps hang around, you shouldn't be worried if you aren't one. A week back it was, why are you against porn ban, it is to prevent child porn, are you against child porn or not? And all their justifications carry the threat of more shaming. I can see why one women activist on twitter has come out with personal details just to show these people a middle finger to their shame based policing efforts.

61 people were arrested for multiple things. From what i understand of local marathi media some of the couples traces of drugs were found in the rooms. Some others were picked up for being drunk in a public area and causing a menace. (they were not couples) So its not just students or even couples who were picked up. A wide vareity of people were picked up from "lodges" and "hotels". Some were under-age prostitutes who were sent to the shelter. Many of the 61 were let go no charges. But this is an article from the area in 2010, (when the BJP was not in power) Prostitution racket busted at Aksa beach http://www.hindustantimes.com/mumbai/prostitution-racket-busted-at-aksa-beach/article1-543833.aspx The least you can do i watch this space. I see English media outlets have quoted the Mid Day without much factchecking.

These hotels were illegal. Thats why they were raided. Typical presstitute media. That entire island has two five star hotels which are legal. The rest are illegal. There were many married couples in these hotels as well and even they were taken in. Only difference is they did not have to phone home to their parents. Phoning home was to check if there were really whom they claim to be. This has nothing to do with any political party.
What has parents got to do with the identity?Adults should be asked their documents and thats about it. And if the hotels are illegal, raid them and take their owners in.Why harass the guests and ask their parents to come? This is typical moral policing that will make BJP unpopular. The Police/govt have no right to tell adults what they do inside a room. There is no excuse for this.

Whatever the case, couples should not have been targetted this way and nothing can justify that. If anything, these hotels should be directed not to allow couples, responsibility is solely theirs. What police did here is an attack on citizen's privacy, which cannot be tolerated under any scenario.
Why shouldn't hotels allow couples? This idea is weird in itself.
