I was following the current vijay merchant trophy and was amazed to see one kid doing exceptionally well in every match.

Be it Batting or bowling he has been topping the charts and by big big margin.

Too early to say anything but the kid must be appreciated for this performance and would surely see him in the next Cooch behar trophy to see how he progresses.

I dunno about the level of competition, etc. but these are some incredible statistical records indeed. Batting avg of 100+ and a bowl avg <10!

U16. Too early to comment.

It didn't stop people from commenting about Armaan Jaffer, Prithvi Shaw and Sarfaraz Khan when they were even younger. Anyway, I doubt is this boy will even be a success in FC, but statistically speaking, these are fairly anomalous numbers.

Just to add another interesting stat for those who have not followed this lad, all his runs came at almost 100 strike rate sometimes even more, he is not somebody who accumulates runs he smashes them. He has been lethal in 2nd innings with the ball, most of the time above 3 wickets and many a times 5 wickets. People might say too early, but he is competing with nearly 200-300 other kids, and he tops the batting bowling charts which makes me feel he is somebody good.

The difference in stats from the rest of the players is really staggering.

Don't know what to make of it but will try to follow his progress in the future.

Yes, it's a definite statistical anomaly. Remains to be seen how he develops (currently around 15 now).

Abhishek Sharma grew up in a cricket environment at home in Amritsar following in the footsteps of his father Raj Kumar Sharma, a former Punjab spinner. It was natural progression for the youngster who would accompany his father to practice sessions and started playing tennis-ball cricket. Soon, Abhishek joined Amritsar Gandhi ground for training and developed into a fine left-arm spinner and a good top-order batsman. His exploits at the Under-14 level while playing for Punjab came to the fore in 2013 and 2014, when he smashed big scores and backed them with wickets.

The 16-year-old all-rounder is presently dominating the batting and bowling charts in the ongoing Vijay Merchant Trophy for Under-16s. The leading run-scorer and bowler has amassed 766 runs, to go with 32 wickets from four matches in the league stage. Also the captain of Punjab team, he has helped his team reach the knock-out stage that will be played in Bengaluru the next week.

“I am enjoying the ongoing season. It is a great feeling to score runs and also take wickets and help your team win matches. I want to continue like this in the knock-out stage and become victorious,” said a beaming Abhishek, who idolizes Indian cricketer Ajinkya Rahane. Punjab are the defending champions of the Vijay Merchant Trophy. His biggest knock came against Jammu & Kashmir when he scored an unbeaten 226.

Although, Abhishek feels his knocks of 155 and 95 in first and second innings respectively against Delhi were the crucial ones. His nine-wicket haul in the first innings against Himachal Pradesh also worked wonders in raising his confidence. He has recorded four five-wicket hauls and piled-up 128 against Haryana, 152 and 95 against Delhi, 226* against J & K, 102 against HP in the tournament.

Abhishek comes from a place in Punjab that has produced great spinners like Bishan Bedi, Krishan Mohan, Gokul Inder Dev, Deepak Chopra and Jasbir Singh. His father makes sure that he keeps telling his son about the finer nuances of spin bowling. He is also exposed to Bedi’s videos by his father. Unlike modern day spinners, who hesitate in giving flight to the ball, Abhishek depends on flight and loop which is the reason for his impressive wicket tally in the tournament.

Known to be the baby of Punjab junior cricket, he is guided by former Indian cricketer Harvinder Singh, Ravneet Ricky, Arun Bedi and Sanjay Mahajan. Having attended two camps at National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, Abhishek also had the chance to learn from former cricketers Gursharan Singh and WV Raman.

“I want to continue performing like this and aim to claim a berth in Punjab’s U-19 and Ranji Trophy teams,” says Abhishek, who has impressed India spinner Harbhajan Singh too. Two years back when Abhishek hammered a century and grabbed seven wickets in a match against J&K in Srinagar. Bedi was present on the occasion acknowledged the youngster’s performance. “It was quite big for me to get a pat from Bedi Sir - I had watched his videos while growing up. I want to work hard on my cricket in coming months and make a mark for my state,” he concluded.

Woow...those are staggering numbers

But nothing to be too excited about......as it all depends on the quality of cricket

I wish he should go on to play for Punjab ranjis

BTW ....why is this guy not present in current world cup team??

because he has not played U19 yet, probably next WC.

Good to see. Punjab has usually done well in the younger age level tournaments.  there was another kid, Shubman Gill who was scoring heavily.  Anmolpreet is another who is now playing in the u19 WC.  These kids need proper coaching to be able to transition properly onto the Ranjis and beyond.  a lot of talent is lost in the transition

Hope so....

But with all those numbers in U16 he should have been automatic selection to U19

Those are the numbers of this season which is still going on while players were selected before the season based on the performance of last season. Team probables were selected long time back. Also, How can he be an automatic selection when he hasn't played any u19 cricket yet. What he does in state u19 will decide his u19 selection.

Abhishek Sharma has been marked as a player for the future it seems, the selectors have made him the captain for U19 Indian Cricket Team & he is not even 18 i suppose. Had done well in the Challengers Trophy for U19. So it seems all the U16 numbers finally are making an impression big time
