So many Tall players in West Indies?

West Indies from past 40 years has produced so many tall cricketers that one will feel that average height their must be 6 feet , but it is not true Jamaica's average height is 5 feet 7.5  inches just 2 inches taller than India. So how come they produce so many tall cricketer with population of around 4 millions , plenty of Tall Jamaicans play other sports so how come they have supply of Giants  On the other hand most Asian teams hardly have Tall players barring exception like Mohd Irfan.

I am talking about Giants 6 feet 4 and above Yes Ishant and Pankaj , Zoysa and other names come in mind , but still Asian nations have never produced Giants like West Indies did and still doing , even their non performing captain is 6 feet 5 or 6 . While in India we need to search very hard to find that .

Their batsman haven't all been tall. Lara, Chanderpaul, Vivian Richards, Shervin Campbell, Kallicharan, Rohan Kanhai, Gus Logie, Adrian Barath......not particularly tall.

 

In the last few years, they've started bringing in these massive, tall and powerful batsmen

Increase in the height of Indians , as we have progressed economically as a nation and had access to good nutrition , has been seen in our cricket team too in the last few years.

 

6'6" --  Ishant ,  Pankaj Singh  

 

6'5" -- Abey Kuruvilla

 

6'4" -- Avesh Khan, Manpreet Goni,  Munaf Patel , Ventatesh Prasad ,   Ranadeb Bose,  Nilesh Kulkarni,

 

6'3" -- VRV Singh, Jaidev Unadkat,  Tinu Yohanan, 

 

Lots of 6'2" players

 

Not like the West Indies but a big improvement by our standards.

There is a line of thought that selective coupling or arranged marriages that was done by slavers during that period on their african american captives was the reason for roboustness amoung african ameriacan community in north america. This has been discounted often, basically the scientific notion is that when babies with genetic material from tropics ( genetically have no height prohibiting genome) are placed in the temperate zones in developed world with good access to sanitation and nutrition they shall grow taller that local population eventually in terms of generations,local population might have genetic adaptation to reduce moisture loss due to bigger or longer torso.

Obviously sportsmen are not representative of the average height of any nation, India probably has more tall people than the whole population of windies simply due to sheer number of people, but the average is always much less.

kya bakvaas hai. Chinese were supposed to be shortest. But now their new generation is way more taller then last one. A lot goes into fooding habbits and wealth of nation. For height, tall gene is dominant over short in gene pairing. So, over period humans are getting taller and taller.

 

PS: Most of Roman age warriors were probably no taller then our SAchin Tendulkar

Compare the heights of other WI/Jamaican  teams like football team/baseball/basketball teams then we can get the idea. If all teams have tall players, then we can say that maybe tall guys get into sports teams easily.
