So many Tall players in West Indies?

Recommended Posts

Here's what i think. Height by itself is not going to get you far. Combine it with fast twitch fibres and above average muscle mass of the Caribbean region and you have a serious advantage. So while Jamaica's population may not have a particularly tall average height, the synergy between height and muscle mass means that those that do have the height are suited for top level sport.

Tall height gives you long levers i.e. reach. Long levers gives you reach whilst remaining reasonably still AND ball-striking momentum (momentum = force x distance from fulcrum). In T20 when the bowler is varying his line and length in the death overs, above traits are gold. No coincidence that Yuvraj Singh, probably our best tall batsman in recent times, managed six sixes off one over.

No, both are same height. about 6'1-2"

do you see the diff between gul and ishant ?

in the about pic asif is atleast 2 inches below gul even though gul is couple of steps in front...

in the pic with ishant and gul Ishant atleast has 6-7 inches on gul..

i put gul no more than 5'11 or a weak 6, Asif is mostly 5'10"

Mohd Irfan is 6'10" at least if not more. Steve Finn and Boyd Ranking are about 6'7-8"

he was measured initially at 6'8" by PCB...he does not have more than 3 inches on Ishant or Morkel in the matches they played together...no way he is more tan 6' 8-9" still riddiculously tall...esp for a pakistani..

Ishant-Sharma-Mohammad-Irfan.jpg

I dont think Irfan has 5 inches on Ishant...Ishant is a strong 6'5" or a weak 6'6"...that puts irfan at about 6'8 or 9" max

The biggest joke is Wikipedia and some other sites stating that  Ishant is 6' 4" .

He is  6' 6".

I am 6'0".......he stood  way taller than me.

ok..thats good..startling disregard for this measuring contest that India shows in general to the 'd!&k' measuring contest that pak claims with 7'1" claims is such a difference and thematic about the two countries. Ind - quietly confident and not too silly, pakistan pathological in lies and lowly in measures.

I was thinking what would be popluation to medals ratio between Sri Lanka and India. Inidan population is 60 times as Sri Lanka but has 7.5 times more gold medals.

population does not have a direct correlation to sporting ability of a country, after a critical mass of player base is attained any increase in non playing population is non contributive. But then you already now that dont you.

Oddly, you did not post this when India-Pakistan comparison was made, which obviously was biased towards Indian. Huh!

The issue with bowlers like Ishant, and Nuwan Zoysa from SL, and going some time back, Bruce Reid of Australia, these guys are very skinny and they look very tall. Zoyusa appears 6'8", but infact was 6'4". Reid appears 7'+, but was 6'8" in reality. Ishant may be 6' 5" or 6' 6" from what I see. But this is a guess.

yes, but you see pakistan has very few medals they are a large nation hundreds of millions of people. SL is a small nation but pretty sizable population 20 mil right, its pretty neat that you have athletic tradition. Pak is just a poor underdeveloped version of India, they also seem to believe that they have some genetic superiority on India which is funny

Sorry man, I think you are on the weed. If this man is not thin, then I don't know what thin means. On ly Kumar Dharmasena was thinner than this guy. That is why he was called Kumar "Pencil" Dharmasena.

I have played with the man, in tape ball cricket. So I can extremely confidently say that you are wrong. He was rivalling Nilesh Kulkarni for being Skinny in late 90s.

Actually it is terrorism that destroyed Pakistan. In 2006 SAF they had pretty good medal tally

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_South_Asian_Games

it was 184 while India was 214, SL was 177. It is from 2006 India emerged as big winner in SAF , the support from state governments has increased substantially to sportsmen .

You should consider gold medals only in a competition with so few countries .   It was   118  for India,  46 for Pakistan and  37 for Sri Lanka.

Most tall young boys from SC will be thin at a young age but they fill up as they grow up. You cannot call them malnourished or thin. If Zoysa was thin, take a look at Brett Lee of 1997-99.

46 gold is not so bad , they are now down to 12 , clearly shows how their sports is going down.

no cant count medals like that.

a gold however lower in number is preeminent that any number of silvers and so on with bronze.

comparisons can only be with gold when all countries have secured some gold.

Anecdotal, i have a colleague who is around 6 foot i have 2-3 inches on him, he has a pic that he took in UK not a clear one to compare as there could be posture issues but Akthar was clearly couple of inches shorter, but he definitely is a big guy, built like a proper athlete

Posture, yuvi seems to have a slouching posture as always. Check the full pic here.

If KP is 6-4" Then Yuvi is no taller than 6 feet

Now no proper info on foot wear on that pic..lets go with pics on the play grounds.

http://im.rediff.com/cricket/2014/apr/09kp1.jpg

In the above pic both are on sport shoes  and have proper straight posture, May be Kp has 2-3 inches on Yuvi max not like the pic above where it looks 5 inches...i think yuvi is a bit shorter than Gayle..but always has poor posture.
