Is MS Dhoni the most selfish player ever to play cricket

stats without context are worthless. now you are including position #5 in it too. You said he would have been better if he had batted more at 3. Those stats wont tell you that Dhoni has never batted at 3 for a sustained period. He would float and come to bat at 3 when openers gave us a good start. For a number 3, many times, one has to come in to bat when bowlers are on top with early wickets which he has not done because he rarely batted at 3 for a sustained period, normally batted up only after a good start to capitalize. In places, like England, SA, NZ, Australia, top 3 have been the toughest positions to bat. Even Hussey averaged 87 once in test cricket once, but he could not sustain as he played more. Same with Dhoni, high might or might not sustain that average if he was a permanent #3 for us.

I wasn't specifically talking about him batting at #3, but batting up the order in general instead of #6 or #7.

Do you have any specific matches? Dhoni does not have many innings at those positions so it should be easy to find several examples. Unfortunately I couldn't find many innings where Dhoni came to bat at #3 after the openers laid the platform. Instead, I did find some innings such as http://www.espncricinfo.com/indvsl/engine/current/match/223634.html

Dhoni and selfish? Perhaps only for captaincy not for his ODI batting.

After his 183* at number 3, in an ideal situation he would have been our permanent number 3 batsman, who knows what he could have achieved. Instead he chose to be a finisher and became a legendary one , perhaps the best ODI cricket has seen since Bevan.

Yes there are those oddities when he promotes himself without rhyme or reason but to those saying he cannot play at number if there is a bowler friendly pitch, go back to his knocks vs Pakistan at Chennai in 2013 or vs WI in the tri series final. You do not average 50+ in ODIs without being a brilliant batsman in shorter formats. There could be a few issues here and there but for someone who has played 300 ODIs, those issues can be ignored.

He's just an average batsman in Tests and T20s. Should not be playing T20s for India at all.

He's not selfish but definitely practices nepotism I think. In that horror 2011 series against England, he called RP Singh from Hawaii to play the last test, considering the fact that RP Singh did not play any first class games since January that year.

If Dhoni wanted a left arm seamer for English conditions, he could have gone for Ashish Nehra, though he did not play test cricket since ages he was definitely more match fit than RP Singh.

Dhoni plays for his not outs hence the bloated average ....so obvious...even rubs on to his minions like Jadeja.

Don't doubt his integrity or patriotism but from an individual standpoint he is pretty nepotistic, selfish and a number cruncher.

he is a great wk batsman and a fine allrounder for us since Kapil Dev but he is not the best thing since slice bread like his fans beleive he is.

great odi batsman, average keeper vs pace, good keeper vs spin, bad tactician, lucky captain who was at the right time and right place, poor t20 batsman, average test batsman

summary of dhoni

Just call him the anti-christ and be done with it.

And people wonder why this forum is going downhill.  Months and years of the same trolls venting out their inner frustrations.  Dhoni sux, he's evil, yada, yada.  Drop Jadeja. He's ugly and Dhoni's buttboy.  blah blah.  Rahane's too skinny,  Yuvraj is too old.  Bhuvi's too slow.   Its a competition in trash-talking our own players.

All those who were turning a blind eye when legends like Sachin, Dravid were abused by Dhoni fans are now whining when an ageing dhoni is being targeted. It is a tradition when a player loses form and drags on and spoils the team's chances, he is picked on. And Dhoni seems to have a lot of head weight and vindication in his heart which doesn't help

You see one Dhoni thread with a few replies and throw yur toys out of the pram? There was a time in a day 25 threads were opened against Sachin which used to go into 20 pages

This forum is going downhill? Dhoni trolls drove off some of the best posters on any forum from this forum who never came back. Those who actually knew how to debate and argue instead of being 16 year old Dhoni fans who use emoticons. Where was your whining then?

So if morons were bashing tendy back then, you feel justified in bashing dhoni now?. Troll logic...

So which part of Dhoni criticism do you not agree with?

his keeping in tests to pacers

his recent hitting ability

his stale captaincy

his backing the wrong players

tell me where you seem to have a problem and maybe the mods can fix it:

i mean would it make it better if someone saidJadeja  gets special treatment due to their off field friendship than someone in jest calling it a homoerotic relationship?

or if someone rather said Dhoni is past his prime over someone saying he plain sucks ***

So basically is it the language or pretty much the content- where you think Dhoni is faultless.

I doubt that.  Who are some of the best posters that left because as a result of 'Dhoni trolls'?  And who are these Dhoni trolls.

The site saw the biggest decline with the long 4-5 month period in which the website was offline and unsuccessful upgrades.  It was like the habit was broken....  Moreover, Tendulkar retired...India won the WC..and many of the  older posters eventually got busy with their lives...i.e marriages,family,children,work.....  And tired of the same old recycled discussions

Looks like Dhoni played another trademark innings :hatsoff: This is what you get when Dhoni comes on to bat early and has to play more than 10 balls. Even Dhoni knows that he is not good enough and can only slog 10 balls, that's why he hides in the dugout till it is late in the innings. But his cheer girls don't understand this and keep asking why Dhoni does not comes up the order

Credit where due. In the post game interview, Dhoni admitted to not batting too well. Took responsibility for the shoddy batting performance of the side in the latter 10 overs.

These aren't traits of a person who is selfish or is looking to fix the blame. These are the traits of a person who is looking to fix the problem.

That's a change  He generally blames the bowlers, pitch, conditions, his dog and Ravi's shouting for the loses.

he talks about it a lot these days, not the first time he said that he needs to express himself without worrying too much but i doubt he has much ability left in him to express freely anymore.
