Wicket Keeper for Indian test team

But Its the keeping skills that are important with the attack that India has. Then their batting is also important if Kohli is adamant on using 5 bowlrers. Saha for next series but I'm sure there in It'll be obvious we need a new life there. But he isn't anywhere in sight. Hope Indian team doesn't make the mistake of going route of the band-aid rule.

Every test team requires a good keeper.

 

Saha and Ojha are the best keepers we have at the moment....but they are not good enough as batsmen in test matches.

 

Bharat and Bains are unknown elements as keepers.  They maybe decent batsmen.

 

I would like to see how K L Rahul progresses as a keeper. His keeping has improved significantly this season....although it may not be test quality yet.  If he can become a test quality keeper then it will be the best solution for us.

For that he'll have to start keeping for his Ranji team first. But I don't think Karnataka will give up on CM Gautam. So its extremely tough for Rahul.

Uthappa was after wicket keeping duties last season. They had tried sweeping of wk duties but probably Gautam was not happy with this arrangement

Gowtham is main keeper...Uthappa did in ODI/T20's mostly [he is also eying teh WK slot in Indian team]

Karnataka tried the sweeping of wicket keeping duties between Gautam & Uthappa to facility Uttapa 'S return to national team.Karnataka coach & Gautam were not happy with this arrangement.

In some matches Gautam kept the wickets, in some Uthappa. They even sweeped wicket keeping during each innings against some teams

I know , but its only in last season i guess prior to that its Gowtham always.

 

This is plain wrong because Utthppa have IPL contract as well while Gowtham needs wicket keeping role to survive in team + he himself have a outside chance..

 

Best way is like how Somerset solved Wicket keeping issue , they let Jos Butler go to Lancashire and kept Kieswetter [It didn't helped them though as Kieswetter retired early due to eye issues]

Seeing some good discussion and arguments after a long time here.. May be no one is too passionate about any keeper prospects, that is why we are having a sane discussion?

It also depends on what KL Rahul wants. Does he want to develop as a keeper-opener or wants just to concentrate on the opening role in the longest format and have WK for fun like in T20s.

 

Keeping for just 20 overs may not be too tough, but concentrating behind the wicket, sometimes for 2-2.5 days is really a tough job which only a specialist can do, whose basics of keepings are strong, who knows how to keep oneself concentrated even during boring periods.

 

Its here I doubt people like Rahul (he hasn't kept in one full Ranji season either) or Uthappa.

 

Then who to look up to? Srikar Bharat as @rkt.india said or the younger crop who need time to mature.

It may not be completely depend on what Rahul wants,end of day he has to see if batting alone can guarantee him a regular spot...(Even Dravid took up keeping she he was not certain starter for India ODI team).

I doubt KL Rahul wants to be keeper but he didn't stood a chance to get into RCB team as batsman alone based on his previous IPL performance (now it's different)

As of now RKT choices looks better ,but we have to wait till next series to see who I first choice.

But keeping in flat IPL matches is different than keeping on spinning tracks in home series. Regular experienced keepers are also not able to keep properly on this pitches.

When we tour abroad it will be difficult to judge swing & bounce

Any idea about wicket keeping skills of Aditya Tare, CM Gautam, Uday Kaul. They seems to be in mid range between Saha ,Ojha & younger keepers Bains Bharat.

It seems Sachin Baby is also wicket keeper for Kerala. He may be good as he has been able to keep his spot against highly popular Samson

Baby is not keeper he is Off spin bowler..

In LOI, his place might be uncertain but a good solid opener is as much of a rare breed in test cricket. If you don't know, just 3 test openers in India have 5000+ runs in the entire history. Part time keeping won't do in tests. We need someone with best skill there.

 

Maybe you've forgotten the struggle before MSD:  India were struggling to cope with the abrupt exit of wicketkeeper Nayan Mongia. Rahul Dravid was forced to improvise behind the stumps in order to plug the gap in ODIs, while a host of ‘keepers (Samir Dighe, Vijay Dahiya, Ajay Ratra, Deep Dasgupta, Parthiv Patel and Dinesh Karthik) were tried in Tests without success.

Aditya Tare has highest dismissals in this year Ranji season

Long way to go for Rahul as keeper..probably will not make it...Struggled badly against Spinners..atleast 10 runs given away in one over + 1 missed stumping

Rahul missed three continuous balls from Chahal bowling .On 2 occasions he missed easy stumping chance.

For test we need specialist wk only

As commentators mentioned yesterday he lacks technique against spinners as of now. He was watching batsman rather than ball and let it slip past him.
