FischerTal
Quote NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that his government would set up a task force to create a strategy to help sportspersons prepare for the next three Olympics. The task force would cover infrastructure, training and selection. PM Modi made the announcement at a Cabinet meeting on Friday, and said the task force would be set up in the next few days. The PM announced that "a task force will be set up to prepare a comprehensive action plan for effective participation of Indian sportspersons in the next three Olympic Games - 2020, 2024 and 2028," read a statement from government spokesperson. "The task force will prepare the overall strategy for sports facilities, training, selection procedure and related matters. The task force will comprise of members who are inhouse experts as well as those from outside," the statement added. The announcement comes against the backdrop of India's two medals at the recently concluded Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, which brought into focus the lack of facilities and support+ for sportspersons in the country. The task force may also look into steps to make officials accountable, to address repeated charges of apathy and lack of interest. source: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/PM-Narendra-Modi-announces-task-force-to-prepare-for-next-three-Olympics/articleshow/53875978.cms hopefully something concrete comes out of this Laaloo
Tibarn
Release control of sports to private/semi-private bodies and watch them flourish. The Indian government should only get involved when sending them to international events. Unless these task forces have actual sportspeople and competent administrators, it probably won't accomplish much. Still, I am happy with our Olympic progress. chewy
whatever this task force come up with, i hope they don't mimic the UK or Chinese method of targeting only talented individuals. I hope they come with a more wider plan which promote grass root development through compulsory physical education through school and well funded sports facilitates in colleges. Build swimming pools, track & field circuits, multi-purpose sports hall in schools, wider education for public on good nutrition etc. Getting the wider community involved (not just targeted talented sportsmen) will also help promote sports related businesses and build an ecosystem of sports / sports industry. recent birtish olympic success came from spending a fortune on targeted talented individuals and specific sports. Funds came from lottery money (basically a form of tax!) but the UK population is getting fatter by the day...and interesting read from Economist http://www.economist.com/news/britain/21705872-more-cash-ruthlessly-funnelled-winners-explains-record-medal-haul-brass-behind Quote The remorseless focus on the elite has drawbacks. For one thing, Lottery revenues come disproportionately from low-income households, whereas the beneficiaries of Olympic funding are a posh bunch. A quarter of the British team in Rio were privately educated. Worse, the success of Britain’s star athletes is in contrast to the lardy state of the general population. The London Olympics was supposed to inspire greater participation in sport. But in England weekly sports participation has fallen by 0.4% since 2012. Time to stop watching sport and start playing it. mishra
Proud of our pure athletes. At least they aren't suffering from Asthma, Arthritis or other conditions which most champions have been. I am giving up on watching DrugCheat-olympics anymore. RobKniff
